Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underworld was once ruled over by the death god Hades, but he sleeps in his immortal tomb, weakened by centuries of neglect. What is to be done with his realm now? Who will refurbish its sepulchral halls, sweep away the corpse dust that coat its tenebrous terraces, and revitalise the dead that once walked its cheerless cloisters? Who else but you? And what is to be found in the underworld? Bone chilling winds sweep across desolate plains, carrying the despairing moans of lost souls to every corner of the realm of the dead. Swamps fester in the pale nacreous glow that rises up from the decaying earth, tombs litter the landscape like broken teeth, shadows walk the land, muttering in the darkness. Here lie the houses of the dead, home to the shades of the deceased - and other things. As you explore the Vulcanverse you will forge friendships, meet companions, make enemies - all of whom have long memories and will help or hinder you throughout your adventures. In this vast open world you will find hundreds of amazing quests, make choices with lasting consequences, win glory, cheat death, and face challenges at every turn. Every decision is in your hands. Book Fables and Futures

    Book Details:
  • Author : George Estreich
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2019-03-19
  • ISBN : 0262351803
  • Pages : 239 pages

Download or read book Fables and Futures written by George Estreich and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How new biomedical technologies—from prenatal testing to gene-editing techniques—require us to imagine who counts as human and what it means to belong. From next-generation prenatal tests, to virtual children, to the genome-editing tool CRISPR-Cas9, new biotechnologies grant us unprecedented power to predict and shape future people. That power implies a question about belonging: which people, which variations, will we welcome? How will we square new biotech advances with the real but fragile gains for people with disabilities—especially when their voices are all but absent from the conversation? This book explores that conversation, the troubled territory where biotechnology and disability meet. In it, George Estreich—an award-winning poet and memoirist, and the father of a young woman with Down syndrome—delves into popular representations of cutting-edge biotech: websites advertising next-generation prenatal tests, feature articles on “three-parent IVF,” a scientist's memoir of constructing a semisynthetic cell, and more. As Estreich shows, each new application of biotechnology is accompanied by a persuasive story, one that minimizes downsides and promises enormous benefits. In this story, people with disabilities are both invisible and essential: a key promise of new technologies is that disability will be repaired or prevented. In chapters that blend personal narrative and scholarship, Estreich restores disability to our narratives of technology. He also considers broader themes: the place of people with disabilities in a world built for the able; the echoes of eugenic history in the genomic present; and the equation of intellect and human value. Examining the stories we tell ourselves, the fables already creating our futures, Estreich argues that, given biotech that can select and shape who we are, we need to imagine, as broadly as possible, what it means to belong.

Book Arctic Routes to Fabled Lands

Download or read book Arctic Routes to Fabled Lands written by Marijke Spies and published by Leiden University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four hundred years ago Willem Barents set sail with two ships for the north via the Pole. Apart from this expedition, numerous other attempts were made by Dutch and Flemish mariners to find a northern trade route to China and Cathay. In this book, Marijke Spies relates the story of Olivier Brunel, the Dutch explorer, who in the sixteenth century, even before Barents and Heemskerk, sought a northern trade route. The numerous maps and illustrations in the book show the geographic knowledge that was available to Olivier Brunel when he set course in 1584 for the north of Russia.

Book Journeys Through Fascism

Download or read book Journeys Through Fascism written by Charles Burdett and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twenty years of Mussolini's rule a huge number of travel texts were written of journeys made during the interwar period to the sacred sites of Fascist Italy, Mussolini's newly conquered African empire, Spain during the Civil War, Nazi Germany, Communist Russia and the America of the New Deal. Examining these observations by writers and journalists, the author throws new light on the evolving ideology of Fascism, how it was experienced and propagated by prominent figures of the time; how the regime created a utopian vision of the Roman past and the imperial future; and how it interpreted the attractions and dangers of other totalitarian cultures. The book helps gain a better understanding of the evolving concepts of imperialism, which were at the heart of Italian Fascism, and thus shows that travel writing can offer an important contribution to historical analysis.
