Book I Want You to Shut the F ck Up

Download or read book I Want You to Shut the F ck Up written by D.L. Hughley and published by Crown. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D.L. Hughley calls it like he sees it, discussing everything from dating to former president Barack Obama with sharp, thoughtful commentary “The best book since The Hunger Games. First he was a King of Comedy; now he’s the king of comedy authors.”—Chris Rock The American dream is in dire need of a wake-up call. A f*cked up society is like an addict: if you are in denial, then things are going to keep getting worse until you hit bottom. According to D. L. Hughley, that's the direction in which America is headed. In I Want You to Shut the F*ck Up, D.L. explains how we've become a nation of fat sissies playing Chicken Little, but in reverse: The sky is falling, but we're supposed to act like everything's fine. D.L. just points out the sobering facts: there is no standard of living by which we are the best. In terms of life expectancy, we're 36th—tied with Cuba; in terms of literacy, we're 20th—behind Kazakhstan. Things are bad now and they're only going to get worse. Unless, of course, you sit down, shut the f*ck up, and listen to what D. L. Hughley has to say. I Want You to Shut the F*ck Up is a slap to the political senses, a much needed ass-kicking of the American sense of entitlement. In these pages, D. L. Hughley calls it like he sees it, offering his hilarious yet insightful thoughts on: • Our supposedly post-racial society • The similarities between America the superpower and the drunk idiot at the bar • Why apologizing is not the answer to controversy, especially when you meant what you said • Why civil rights leaders are largely to blame for black people not being represented on television • And more!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One man’s spiritual journey to rediscover how much he hates spiritual journeys. “A dizzyingly fun parody” (Publishers Weekly). In Drink, Play, F@#k, Bob Sullivan, a jilted husband, sets off to explore the world, experience a meaningful connection with the divine, and rediscover his passion. His travels lead him from his home in New York City to a drinking bender across Ireland, through the glitz and glamour that is Las Vegas, and to the hedonistic pleasure palaces of Thailand. After a lifetime of playing it safe, Sullivan finally follows his heart and lives out everyone’s deepest fantasies. For who among us hasn’t dreamed of standing stark naked, head upturned, and mouth agape beneath a cascading torrent of Guinness Stout? What could be more exhilarating than losing every penny you have because Charlie Weis went for a meaningless last-second field goal? And what sensate creature could ever doubt that the greatest pleasure known to man can be found in a leaky bamboo shack filled with glassy-eyed, bruised Asian hookers? Bob Sullivan has a lot to teach us about life. Let’s just pray we have the wisdom to put aside our preconceptions and listen. Because what Sullivan finds isn’t at all what he expected. “Two years after invading every bookshelf across the world, something positive has come out of Elizabeth Gilbert’s mind-numbingly self-absorbed memoir: Andrew Gottlieb’s fictional response.” —Monica Weymouth, Metro

Book Glass Walls and Glass Ceilings

Download or read book Glass Walls and Glass Ceilings written by Margaret Reid and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-12-30 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reid, Kerr, and Miller seek to redress the lack of systematic, generalizable research on women's representation in state and municipal bureaucracies by focusing specifically on the representation of female managers in high-level policy and decision-making positions in their agencies or departments. Their primary interest is in examining the distribution of women and men in state and municipal administrative and professional positions by agency and over time (from 1987 through 1997) in order to determine if, first, agency missions are associated with glass walls and glass ceilings, and, second, whether, relative to white women, African American women and Latinas have made progress in laying claim to a greater share of managerial positions in public-sector agencies. Their analysis reveals a richly textured and complicated set of factors and interrelationships that vary widely across different policy areas, agency contexts, and levels of government. They show continued patterns of underrepresentation in agencies with regulatory and distributive policy commitments while showing some improvements in those agencies that tend to be traditionally populated by women, health, welfare, and social services, for example.

Book Mods Minis and Madmen

Download or read book Mods Minis and Madmen written by D. Richard Truman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-12-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nostalgic romp through the sixties that changed everyones lives forever, Mods, Minis, and Madmen presents a story of remarkable achievement during the twentieth centurys most significant cultural reboot. It celebrates a wondrous age drugged by the can-do attitude of youth. Revolutionary London was the birthplace of the boutique, and Mary Quant introduced the mini-skirtnamed after a car. John Stephen introduced heart-racing male boutiques on Kings Road that soon carved out a global niche. Lesley Hornby also known as Twiggy, the Cockney dolly birdstrutted her popsicle legs while touting mini-fashions. East Londoner Vidal Sassoon gave new life to tousled hair with a look that is still with us today. And of course, British sounds, led by the Beatles, hammered the charts in every country able to tune in. The lyrics spoke to us and seemed to sympathize with our turmoil, revealing an honest understanding of life as it would be, up to the age of sixty-four. It was a booster shot that pumped up everyone living in the sixties, and their tales would be told decades later. Mods, Minis, and Madmen is the tale of a writer and his disciples from the New World arriving in the old, just as the explosion was about to take place.
