Book Laboratory and Pilot Plant Evaluation of Intermittent Loading on Small scale Extended Aeration Biological Systems

Download or read book Laboratory and Pilot Plant Evaluation of Intermittent Loading on Small scale Extended Aeration Biological Systems written by Jerome L. Mahloch and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for designing, constructing, and operating wastewater treatment systems for its recreational areas. The use of these areas by 391 million visitors in 1976 emphasizes the importance and significance of this responsibility. Reducing or eliminating the discharge of organic matter and suspended solids from recreational areas to receiving streams or lakes is of paramount importance in the protection of the environment and the maintenance of acceptable water quality. The importance attached to the production of a stable, high-quality effluent increases the priority to define the performance of a biological treatment system under intermittent loading conditions. The approach used in this study involved development of a mathematical model to predict the performance of a completely mixed activated sludge system under intermittent loading conditions, defined for this study as time-dependent hydraulic and organic loadings. The model was verified first with laboratory data from a bench-scale extended aeration system and then with field data from a prototype extended aeration package treatment plant. Parameters used in developing the study included effluent quality, dissolved oxygen uptake, and other performance indicators related to biomass response to intermittent loading conditions. Results of the laboratory phase of this study indicate that an extended aeration activated sludge system will generally perform satisfactorily under intermittent loading conditions. Biological evaluation of the laboratory systems subjected to intermittent loadings indicated that the animal populations within the reactor were chiefly responsible for the fluctuations in the performance of the system.

Book Performance Evaluation of a Full Scale Extended Aeration System in Al Bireh City Palestine

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of a Full Scale Extended Aeration System in Al Bireh City Palestine written by Rashed M.Y Al-Sa'ed and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major challenges attributed to dysfunctional waste water treatment facilities in developing countries include lack of commitment and poor informed decision making by the higher municipal administration. This paper presents how process monitoring and control during full scale operation ensures sustainability of civic infrastructures like Al-Bireh waste water treatment plant (AWWTP). It is written from the perspective of practical process selection to evaluate the performance of AWWTP, a single-sludge nitrification-denitrification process with aerobic sludge stabilization. Process monitoring data (July 2000-April 2007) from available monthly operating reports were analyzed and evaluated. Additional data on microbiological analysis and information about facility unit operations were gathered through review of published local literature and interviews with AWWTP personnel. Influent and effluent data evaluated were the chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP). Despite annual and seasonal variations in AWWTP influent for COD, BOD, TN, and TP, the Palestinian wastewater reuse requirements for restricted irrigation were met. Process design and proper facility operation have direct impacts on effluent quality. The study concludes that regardless of the design capacity and process type, adequate administrative and operational management dictate the sustainability of AWWTP and reuse schemes.

Book Assessment of Treatment Plant Performance and Water Quality Data A Guide for Students Researchers and Practitioners

Download or read book Assessment of Treatment Plant Performance and Water Quality Data A Guide for Students Researchers and Practitioners written by Marcos von Sperling and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the basic principles for evaluating water quality and treatment plant performance in a clear, innovative and didactic way, using a combined approach that involves the interpretation of monitoring data associated with (i) the basic processes that take place in water bodies and in water and wastewater treatment plants and (ii) data management and statistical calculations to allow a deep interpretation of the data. This book is problem-oriented and works from practice to theory, covering most of the information you will need, such as (a) obtaining flow data and working with the concept of loading, (b) organizing sampling programmes and measurements, (c) connecting laboratory analysis to data management, (e) using numerical and graphical methods for describing monitoring data (descriptive statistics), (f) understanding and reporting removal efficiencies, (g) recognizing symmetry and asymmetry in monitoring data (normal and log-normal distributions), (h) evaluating compliance with targets and regulatory standards for effluents and water bodies, (i) making comparisons with the monitoring data (tests of hypothesis), (j) understanding the relationship between monitoring variables (correlation and regression analysis), (k) making water and mass balances, (l) understanding the different loading rates applied to treatment units, (m) learning the principles of reaction kinetics and reactor hydraulics and (n) performing calibration and verification of models. The major concepts are illustrated by 92 fully worked-out examples, which are supported by 75 freely-downloadable Excel spreadsheets. Each chapter concludes with a checklist for your report. If you are a student, researcher or practitioner planning to use or already using treatment plant and water quality monitoring data, then this book is for you! 75 Excel spreadsheets are available to download.

Book Extended aeration Plants and Intermittent Watercourses

Download or read book Extended aeration Plants and Intermittent Watercourses written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Two basic extended-aeration plants that discharge effluents to intermittent watercourses were studies during various seasons of the year. Except for periods of slug discharges, the plants produced effluents with a BOD of less than 35 mg/l and suspended solids less than 30 mg/l. Plant efficiency was directly related to the amount of solids lost as a result of fluctuations in raw waste flow or as a result of denitrification and rising soldis in the sedimentation basin and consequent overflow. With the addition of sludge-wasting facilities or effluent-polishing units, these plants would be capable of efficient continuous operation for long periods. Periodic heavy discharge of suspended solids formed sludge deposits in the two streams receiving effluent from the plants. Counts of benthic forms above and below the plant outfalls and at sampling points downstream clearly showed the effect of these deposits. Algal growths were profuse in unshaded portions of the streams, indicating high nutrient levels."--P.v.
