Download or read book Consumer Value written by Morris Holbrook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-03-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As shoppers, what factors influence our decision to purchase an object or service? Why do we chose one product over another? How do we attribute value as part of the shopping experience? The theme of 'serving' the customer and customer satisfaction is central to every formulation of the marketing concept, yet few books attenpt to define and analyse exactly what it is that consumers want. In this provocative collection of essays, Morris Holbrook brings together a team of the top US and European scholars to discuss an issue of great importance to the study of marketing and consumer behaviour. This ground-breaking, interdisciplinary book provides an innovative framework for the study of consumer value which is used to critically examine the nature and type of value that consumers derive from the consumption experience - effiency, excellence, status, esteem, play, aesthetics, ethics, spirituality. Guaranteed to provoke debate and controversy, this is a courageous, individualistic and idiosyncratic book which should appeal to students of marketing, consumer behaviour, cultural studies and consumption studies.

Download or read book Nature and Landscape written by Allen Carlson and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The roots of environmental aesthetics reach back to the ideas of eighteenth-century thinkers who found nature an ideal source of aesthetic experience. Today, having blossomed into a significant subfield of aesthetics, environmental aesthetics studies and encourages the appreciation of not just natural environments but also human-made and human-modified landscapes. Nature and Landscape is an important introduction to this rapidly growing area of aesthetic understanding and appreciation. Allen Carlson begins by tracing the development of the field's historical background, and then surveys contemporary positions on the aesthetics of nature, such as scientific cognitivism, which holds that certain kinds of scientific knowledge are necessary for a full appreciation of natural environments. Carlson next turns to environments that have been created or changed by humans and the dilemmas that are posed by the appreciation of such landscapes. He examines how to aesthetically appreciate a variety of urban and rural landscapes and concludes with a discussion of whether there is, in general, a correct way to aesthetically experience the environment.

Download or read book Art and Analysis written by Edward G. Ballard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aesthetics, fledgling of the philosophic brood, is the most suspect of that family. It is suspected of all the philosophical sins: vagueness, disorder, dogmatism, emotionalism, reductionism, compartmentalization. Sometimes its youth is thought to be a sufficient excuse for these divagations. Sometimes the very nature of its content, involving the waywardness of genius, the remoteness of feeling from intellect, the surd of inspiration in even the mildest appreciation, are believed to condemn aes thetics irrevocably to the underside of the civilized man's domain. Some philosophers have gloried in this apparently mystical and a-rational quality and have seen in it the very nature of the beautiful; others have come to regard it, rather, as evidence of the unskillfulness of our minds and have turned away from aesthetic problems to the task of sharpening the aesthetician's language and logic. The laughter of the gods is not difficult to discern through the poetry of the more mystical aesthetician or through the prose of the analysts. Meanwhile the manifold complexities and problems of aesthetic experience invite our understanding. For aesthetic experience is a present fact of human life and may, perhaps, be understood by men. Such, at least, will be the present assumption. This is the reason why the title of this book mentions art together with analysis; for if art is intelligible, the work of art and the experience of it may be analyzed into its functional parts.

Book Reid and his French Disciples

Download or read book Reid and his French Disciples written by James W. Manns and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book opens with the most detailed account yet of Thomas Reid's expressionist aesthetic theory, integrating it thoroughly into his metaphysical, epistemological, and metaphilosophical viewpoints, each of which is examined closely in its turn. The book then traces out the influence which Reid, an eighteenth-century Scottish thinker, exercised on nineteenth-century French philosophy, an influence which proves considerable. Victor Cousin, the most significant philosophical figure in post-Napoleonic France, was profoundly impressed by Reid' s thinking. The author demonstrates the depth and extent of his dependence in epistemological, metaphysical, and aesthetic matters. He then pursues Cousin's (hence Reid's) legacy through three succeeding generations of French academics and intellectuals, focusing throughout on the development of the expressionist aesthetic. Principal among these heritors are Théodore Jouffroy, Charles Lévêque, and Sully-Prudhomme.
