Book excerpt: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." John wrote his gospel to give the world something in which to believe. In John 20:30, he says "Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book." He further explains in 21:25 that he estimates that if everything Jesus did were recorded that all the books in all the libraries in the world couldn't hold what would be written. So, why did John include these things in these 21 chapters? The key is the word he uses "signs". John picked events, actions, miraculous and mundane, things that together would show us, give us a sign, a token, a revelation, in which we can place the full weight of our trust, the word we use is faith. And faith in Jesus, results in salvation and reconciliation with God. To all who receive him, he gave the right to become the children of God, to those who believe in his name, John 1:12. So, how are we going to make that shift in faith, under the power and prompting of the Holy Spirit? John 20:31 these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.My sermons in John's gospel are collected in three volumes. "Written in Flesh" introduces the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us and by his very presence called us to understand that God had come to make us new and make us right, chapters 1-3. Beginning in chapter 4 continuing through chapter 12, we see his public ministry, "That You May Believe". Then finally, beginning in chapter 13 through the end, we have book 3 as Jesus is crucified, resurrected, and commissions us, "That You May Have Life". I pray that these books will inspire you to know the Person, Potential, and the Purpose of the Son of God, the force behind all of life, come among us, to bring us to God.

Book Preaching

  • Author : John F. MacArthur
  • Publisher : Thomas Nelson
  • Release : 2005-08-21
  • ISBN : 141857757X
  • Pages : 454 pages

Download or read book Preaching written by John F. MacArthur and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2005-08-21 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many sermons preached today lack the divine knowledge and spiritual understanding available only through dynamic expository preaching. In Preaching: How to Preach Biblically, John MacArthur’' well-known passion for the Bible combines with the expertise of faculty members at The Master's Seminary to inspire and equip preachers in effective biblical preaching. Preaching: How to Preach Biblically flows from biblical foundations for expository preaching through a detailed process of developing expositions and creating sermons to the actual delivery of expository messages, connecting what pastors learn in seminary with the sermons preached in a local church. This volume shows how to progress purposefully from one phase to the next in preparing to minister to God's people through preaching. This book answers these questions and more: What is expository, biblical preaching? What are the theological and historical foundations for insisting on expository preaching? What are the steps involved in preparation for and participation in biblical preaching? What models exist for expository preaching today? The Master's Seminary faculty, with over thirty years' experience in preaching and seminary training of preachers, contributes a treasury of expertise alongside insights from expositor John MacArthur. While united on their commitment to exposition, the variety of individual expressions and methodological preferences discussed offers beneficial assistance for any preacher seeking a higher level of expository excellence.

Book Commentary on the Gospel According to S John

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ...And it was to the intent that He might not seem too presumptuous, and that God the Father in the heavens had not of His own will made the Son sit on His right hand, the Father Himself is introduced saying this: Sit Thou on My right hand, the Psalmist says this. And no one with Can 1 any sense will say that the Father has the second place 0 nv 28 of honour though He has the Son on His right hand, but will rather take what I have said into consideration. For it is not the Father, but rather the Son, on account of His voluntary degradation and suffering, Who must be conceived as sitting on the right hand, and having a place from which no inferiority could be inferred, as He might be numbered among inferior beings by those who cannot comprehend the mystery of His Incarnation. Therefore a place on the right hand of His F ather, against Whom no such charge can be brought, is allotted to the Son that His equality may be maintained. We have done well to introduce these explanations now, which have an intimate connexion with the present subject. Now taking up again and unfolding from the beginning the whole purpose of our disquisition, I proceed to say that continual converse with our Saviour Christ is sweet and acceptable and pleasant to us, although for our sake He has emptied Himself of His Phil 11 7 glory, as has been written, and taken the form of a servant and the dishonour of man's nature. For what is man's nature as compared with God! Nor was the Incarnation to the advantage of the Son, but to ascend to His Father profited Him more, and to recover His own glory and power and Divine honour in the sight of all, and no longer obscured. For He sat on the right hand by the will of His F ather. For He loves Him as His own Offspring...

Download or read book Pastor John Volume II written by Brian N. Tebbutt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John's Gospel can be both inspiring and bewildering. This book enables insight into the Gospel in a fresh way. How is it that we respond to it as we do? Understanding is enhanced by studying the text and by being aware of the kind of responses we make. Reading and working with it will deepen fellowship and skill in pastoral care. John's text is mined for gems of insight into ourselves and as a rich resource of ample illustrative material for preachers and teachers. This book elucidates chapters five to nine of the Gospel, presenting insights that involve us in the story. The content derives from years of teaching John's Gospel in workshops and reflection groups in varying church contexts. Guidance is given in working in this way and in how we can share our insights with each other in the light of the text. This experience of John's Gospel is illuminated using recent ways of reading. What the story means is conveyed in detailed Bible study. It becomes real for us. How this happens is explored by understanding the process of reading and by observing our reactions to the text. John's Christ becomes central to who we are.

Book The Formation of the Biblical Canon Volume 2

Download or read book The Formation of the Biblical Canon Volume 2 written by Lee Martin McDonald and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lee Martin McDonald provides a magisterial overview of the development of the biblical canon --- the emergence of the list of individual texts that constitutes the Christian bible. In these two volumes -- in sum more than double the length of his previous works -- McDonald presents his most in-depth overview to date. McDonald shows students and researchers how the list of texts that constitute 'the bible' was once far more fluid than it is today and guides readers through the minefield of different texts, different versions, and the different lists of texts considered 'canonical' that abounded in antiquity. Questions of the origin and transmission of texts are introduced as well as consideration of innovations in the presentation of texts, collections of documents, archaeological finds and Church councils. In the first volume McDonald reexamines issues of canon formation once considered settled, and sets the range of texts that make up the Hebrew Bible (or Old Testament) in their broader context. Each indidvidual text is discussed, as are the cultural, political and historical situations surrounding them. This second volume considers the New Testament, and the range of so-called 'apocryphal' gospels that were written in early centuries, and used by many Christian groups before the canon was closed. Also included are comprehensive appendices which show various canon lists for both Old and New Testaments and for the bible as a whole.
