Book Experimental Study of Solid Propellant Combustion Instability

Download or read book Experimental Study of Solid Propellant Combustion Instability written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, experimental investigation of solid propellant combustion instability using an end burning T-Burner setup is performed. For this purpose, a T-Burner setup is designed, analyzed, constructed and tested with all its sub components. T-Burner setup constructed is mainly composed of a base part, a control panel and the T-Burner itself. Combustion chamber, pressure stabilization mechanism, pressurization system, measurement instruments and data acquisition systems form the T-Burner. Pressure stabilization mechanism is utilized in two different alternatives, first of which is by the use of nitrogen gas and a small surge tank with a cavitating venturi. This is a brand new approach for this kind of system. The second alternative is the use of a choked nozzle for pressure stabilization. Resonance frequencies of the system with the two different pressure stabilization mechanisms are experimentally evaluated. Helmholtz frequency of the T-burner constructed is calculated and no Helmholtz instability is observed in the system. Constructed T-Burner setup is operated for a specific solid propellant. System worked successfully and pressure data are obtained. Pressure data revealed oscillatory behaviour. Decay and growth rates of pressure oscillations are used for the calculation of pressure response of the propellant tested. By the use of this T-Burner comparison of the behavior of different propellants can be performed. It can be used as a test device for measuring quantitatively the response of a burning propellant to unsteady motions.

Book Solid Propellant Combustion Instability Suppression Devices

Download or read book Solid Propellant Combustion Instability Suppression Devices written by Carl L. Oberg and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program has been performed to develop design criteria and design methods which may be used to ensure effective operational use of suppression devices to prevent acoustic modes of combustion instability in solid-propellant motors. The program comprised analytical studies and laboratory experimental studies, with T-burners and acoustic models being employed for the experimental work. Analytical studies of the stabilization processes brought about by the suppression devices have been performed. Problems relating to the manufacturing, durability, and installation are being investigated. Experimental studies of the stabilization processes have been made; acoustic models and a variation of the T-burner have been utilized for this purpose. (Author).

Book A Comparison of Analysis and Experiment for Solid Propellant Combustion Instability

Download or read book A Comparison of Analysis and Experiment for Solid Propellant Combustion Instability written by Merrill W. Beckstead and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion instability data obtained with the same propellants utilizing a T-burner and an L-burner are presented and compared. Analyses for these burners are combined directly with results of a transient analysis of the combustion. The form of the combustion analysis contains two parameters and by the proper combination of the various analyses, these two parameters can be evaluated directly in terms of the experimental variables. The results indicate the parameter values are not consistent nor necessarily realistic. It appears that the theoretical models of transient combustion result in a general, qualitative agreement with experimental data, but that extensive revisions in these models will be necessary in order to obtain quantitative agreement. Book Research on Solid Propellant Combustion Instability

Download or read book Research on Solid Propellant Combustion Instability written by R. H. WOODWARD and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental study of the non-steady combustion of solid propellants with application to rocket instability is described. A film strip of a metallized solid propellant burning in an oscillating pressure field was analyzed in order to determine the phase relationship between the imposed pressure maxima and an apparent wave of luminosity in the combustion gases. The implications of these observations as they affect the model of the burning propellant are briefly considered. Two types of experimental observation which will be used to study non-steady combustion are outlined. One method involves the measurement of the temperature of the combustion gases downstream from the flame zone. The use of a particle track method for the observation of pressure-velocity relationships in the burnt gases is also considered. (Author).

Book Liquid Rocket Engine Combustion Instability

Download or read book Liquid Rocket Engine Combustion Instability written by Vigor Young and published by AIAA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Since the invention of the V-2 rocket during World War II, combustion instabilities have been recognized as one of the most difficult problems in the development of liquid propellant rocket engines. This book is the first published in the United States on the subject since NASA's Liquid Rocket Combustion Instability (NASA SP-194) in 1972. In this book, experts cover four major subject areas: engine phenomenology and case studies, fundamental mechanisms of combustion instability, combustion instability analysis, and engine and component testing. Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of technical information from Russia and China--a first.

Book Research on Non steady Burning of Solid Propellants with Special Reference to Combustion Instability

Download or read book Research on Non steady Burning of Solid Propellants with Special Reference to Combustion Instability written by Martin Summerfield and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of the research program has been to study the non-steady burning characteristics of solid rocket propellants, both experimentally and theoretically, to establish a basis for avoiding combustion instability in rocket motors and for predicting thrust transients during motor ignition and extinction. A new non-steady burning model for composite propellants was formulated in which the key element, the non-steady heat feedback law from the gaseous flame, was shown to be a function of the instantaneous pressure and burning rate. Solutions to this model showed that burning stability is largely determined by the exothermicity of reactions in the immediate neighborhood of the propellant surface and by the sensitivity of burning rate to surface temperature. The predictions of the model were generally confirmed by T-motor and rapid pressurization experiments. The non-steady burning model was also used to analyze L-star combustion instability in rocket motors and to demonstrate the feasibility of a novel mechanism for suppression of combustion instability by aluminum addition to a propellant. Book Combustion Instability and the Design of Solid Propellant Rocket Motors

Download or read book Combustion Instability and the Design of Solid Propellant Rocket Motors written by A. K. Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of a solid propellant rocket motor is generally constrained to meet specific ballistic requirements which are, in turn, imposed by vehicle trajectory considerations. Since the abnormalities associated with combustion instability are characterized by rapid and often severe fluctuations of motor pressure and thrust, unstable operation cannot usually be tolerated in flight vehicles. Consequently, care must be taken during the development phase to design towards stable operation and to dynamically test prototype motors. The nonlinear longitudinal mode of combustion instability is often encountered in motors containing aluminized propellants and has had an important influence on a number of Canadian development programs. The present paper is based on extensive experimental studies of this phenomenon carried out at the Defence Research Establishment Valcartier. This work has yielded a good phenomenological description of the instability, design criteria and guidelines and evaluation techniques which can be of considerable utility to the motor designer. These are described with the aid of typical data. (Author).
