Book Experimental Results Using Methanol and Methanol gasoline Blends as Automotive Engine Fuel

Download or read book Experimental Results Using Methanol and Methanol gasoline Blends as Automotive Engine Fuel written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative emission and fuel energy economy data were generated using 1975 model vehicles adjusted for gasoline fuel and using gasoline and gasoline blended with 5 and 10% methanol; tests were made at temperatures of 20°, 75°, and 100°F on a chassis dynamometer in a climate-controlled test chamber. Results suggest that emissions and fuel energy economy are generally affected to the extent that methanol addition affects air-fuel stoichiometry, fuel heat content, and fuel vapor pressure. The term ''fuel energy economy'' is used to denote calculations on the basis of fuel energy content in lieu of fuel quantity. Vehicle emissions and fuel economy were essentially unchanged during approximately 7,500 miles of road testing; no engine or fuel system component failures were encountered during that testing. Road octane measurements were made for the fuels containing 5, 10, and 15% methanol in base gasolines of 84, 87, and 91 research octane quality. Results show significantly better octane improvement in blending methanol with the lower octane fuels as compared with the improvement in blending with the higher octane fuels. Steady-state engine emission and fuel energy economy data were generated using a late model automotive engine fueled with 5, 10, 15, and 100% methanol/gasoline blend. Test variables and engine parametric adjustments included engine speed, exhaust gas recirculation rate, air-fuel ratio, ignition timing, and compression ratio. Results suggest that operation with pure methanol may allow use of high-compression engines to realize improved fuel energy economy with relatively low oxides of nitrogen emission.

Book 50 000 Mile Methanol gasoline Blend Fleet Study

Download or read book 50 000 Mile Methanol gasoline Blend Fleet Study written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven current production automobiles are being used in a fleet study to obtain operational experience in using 10% methanol/90% gasoline blends as an automotive fuel. Data from chassis dynamometer tests (run according to the 1975--1978 Federal test procedure) have been obtained, showing fuel economy and exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, unburned fuel, methanol, and aldehydes. These data are shown for each of the vehicles when operated on the 10% methanol blend, and on unleaded low octane Indolene. Chassis dynamometer tests were run at 5,000-mile intervals during the 35,000 miles accumulated on each of the four 1977 model-year vehicles and at 5,000 and 10,000 mile accumulation levels for each of the three 1978 model-year vehicles. These data show an average decrease in volumetric fuel economy (approx. = 5%) and a reduction in carbon monoxide emissions associated with the use of the 10% methanol blend. Exhaust emission deterioration factors are projected from the Federal test procedure urban cycle data. The most severe driveability problems that have been encountered thus far into the program are related to operating on a phase separated fuel and materials compatibility problems with an elastomer in the air-fuel control hardware of one vehicle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amongst concerns about climate change, energy security decline and depletion of fossil fuels, this book explores the high importance of and interests in alternative energy resources. Many studies have shown that biomass fuels are sustainable, environmentally friendly and can be the most appropriate replacement to the depleting crude oil. Additionally, they can expand green landscapes, create new job opportunities, be directly utilised in standard power systems and improve combustion performance. Biomass fuels can be limited due to production cost and competition with food. Therefore, plant and food wastes play an important role in reducing these costs and recycling dump bio-materials. Production of biofuels from non-food biomass has emerged as a sustainable option to tackle the problems associated with growing demands for energy.

Book Investigation of the Use of Methanol gasoline Blends

Download or read book Investigation of the Use of Methanol gasoline Blends written by Michael M. Sprinkel and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An 18-month field test was conducted to determine if the Virginia Department of Highways & Transportation should give serious consideration to the use of methanol as a substitute for gasoline in the operation of its motor vehicles. Five of the eight 1973 and 1974 model vehicles involved in the test were operated for a total of 92,000 miles on a fuel blend containing an average of 10.7% methanol and 89.3% lead-free gasoline. The fuel was dispensed from a commercial type gasoline blending pump by blending at the nozzle and by pumping directly from a storage tank containing a specified blend of methanol and gasoline. The vehicles operating on the blend averaged 4.0% fewer miles per gallon but were 1.3% more efficient from a miles/Btu standpoint than the vehicles operating on lead-free gasoline. Exhaust emissions data suggested that emissions are more dependent on carburetor adjustments than on the percentage of methanol in the fuel. Drivability was impaired enough in two of the vehicles operating on the blend to warrant carburetor modifications before the vehicles could be operated safely and satisfactorily because the addition of methanol made the fuel air mixture too lean for good engine performance and because the methanol was incompatible with certain fuel system parts. Since methanol and gasoline are not completely miscible at all temperatures and moisture conditions, a major effort was required to properly store and dispense the desired blend. From a consideration of economic and supply factors, it was concluded that the use of methanol-gasoline blends in Department vehicles would not be justified at this time. Implementation would require that special attention be directed to vehicular adjustments and to the storage and handling of the blends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
