Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An exploratory descriptive qualitative study was conducted to learn about the experience of men caring for their wives diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Limited research is available on the role of the male caregiver. Data collection was accomplished by using open-ended interview questions. Data were transcribed verbatim from tape-recorded interviews. An inductive approach guided the data analysis. Seven men participated in this study. Four major themes emerged from the data; Feelings of Helplessness, My Golden Years Kind of Blew Up, I Could Not Have Made it Without Support From Others, and Love Never Fails. Men experienced both positive and negative aspects of caregiving. Understanding what this experience is like for male caregivers may help health care professionals guide these men in their caregiving"--Leaf ii.

Despite this fact, the vast majority of research on caregiving has centered on the experience of the female caregiver. This volume addresses the fundamental gap in our knowledge and theories about the growing male subpopulation of caregivers. The authors identify the serious limitations that result from viewing men caregivers through the lens of women's experiences and call for an unbiased and fresh perspective in future research. Special consideration is given to men who care for a family member with dementia; fathers of adult children with mental retardation; gay male caregivers for partners with AIDS; and sons and parent care.

Book Caring for Carolee

Download or read book Caring for Carolee written by Howard D. Mehlinger and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I appreciate it as a good fusion of personal experience and practical tips.” -Dayna A Thompson Alzheimer’s Educator This booklet is intended for readers who wish to learn about the impact that dementia can have on the lives of happily married couples. The author traces the changes that have occurred in their individual lives and in their relationship to one another since his wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Beginning with their awareness of her disease to the present day, the reader will learn about the adjustments they have been forced to make as they strive to “live normal lives” in their own home, as long as possible. This booklet is also a love story. It is told from the husband’s (and primary caregiver’s) point of view. He explores what it means to care for a loved one when the loved one is no longer capable of caring for him. There is nothing remarkable about the lives of the individuals described in this booklet. Hundreds of thousands of American men and women who are caring for a spouse afflicted with one or more forms of dementia have similar experiences. What is noteworthy is the near absence of first-person accounts by those who are coping with dementia on a daily basis. This booklet helps to help fill that gap.

Download or read book Age Matters written by Toni M. Calasanti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of original chapters is designed to bring attention to a neglected area of feminist scholarship - aging. After several decades of feminist studies we are now well informed of the complex ways that gender shapes the lives of women and men. Similarly, we know more about how gendered power relations interface with race and ethnicity, class and sexual orientation. Serious theorizing of old age and age relations to gender represents the next frontier of feminist scholarship. In this volume, leading national and international feminist scholars of aging take first steps in this direction, illuminating how age relations interact with other social inequalities, particularly gender. In doing so, the authors challenge and transform feminist scholarship and many taken for granted concepts in gender studies.

At least 17.7 million individuals in the United States are caregivers of an older adult with a health or functional limitation. The nation's family caregivers provide the lion's share of long-term care for our older adult population. They are also central to older adults' access to and receipt of health care and community-based social services. Yet the need to recognize and support caregivers is among the least appreciated challenges facing the aging U.S. population. Families Caring for an Aging America examines the prevalence and nature of family caregiving of older adults and the available evidence on the effectiveness of programs, supports, and other interventions designed to support family caregivers. This report also assesses and recommends policies to address the needs of family caregivers and to minimize the barriers that they encounter in trying to meet the needs of older adults.

Book Alzheimer s Dementia from the Experiences of a Caregiver

Download or read book Alzheimer s Dementia from the Experiences of a Caregiver written by Rev. Frederick Trunk and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are a caregiver, or know someone who is, you owe it to yourself to read this book. It is very important to know the phases of Alzheimer's as well as the effects it has, not only on the patient, but on those who care for, or live with the patient. If you know someone who is struggling with the challenge you need to know how to help them. This book will give you insight into the challenges of dementia and Alzheimer's from the prospective of a caregiver who started attending caregivers meetings shortly after he realized that his wife was having unusual challenges and behaviors. Frederick and Marjorie were caregivers for about three years for a couple from their church. They were not able to get satisfactory help from family members or friends so they stepped in and got the appropriate legal Power of Attorney and helped them get into assisted living. We took care of their needs until they passed away. During this period we learned a lot about care giving. Frederick has been caregiver for his wife Marjorie for eleven years. His wish is that the book he has written will get into the hands of those who are just beginning to recognize there is a problem as well as those who may be experiencing many years as a caregiver. He also wants people to know that getting help early on is very important and makes the challenge of care giving much easier. For over forty years Frederick has served as Minister of Music/Organist in eleven churches in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Georgia. He attended Northeastern Bible College and Seminary in Essex Fells, New Jersey, and International Christian College and Seminary in Plymouth, Florida where he earned a Bachelor of Music and a Masters in Ministry.
