Book excerpt: Materials for expedient roadway pavement repairs must provide a trafficable repair in a minimal amount of time. Therefore, any repair material must be able to cure quickly and be easy to use. There are a large number of proprietary cementitious rapid repair materials for both asphalt and concrete pavements. Three types of cementitious materials were used to make acceptable expedient repairs to an asphalt roadway. Trafficking showed that these materials were not flexible enough to provide durable repairs to flexible pavements in hot weather. There are a number of proprietary asphalt based repair materials. These materials can generally be trafficked immediately after placement with some displacement, depending upon the loads. These products will gain more stability with time and with cooler temperatures. Repair materials using cut-back asphalts generally provide the best combination of workability and long-term storage under adverse conditions, particularly freezing temperatures. This study evaluated the asphalt repair materials for workability, strength using Marshall stability and triaxial testing, and durability in regards to cohesion and adhesion properties. The majority of repair materials use an open-graded mixture and the Marshall stability test is not appropriate for this type of gradation. The proprietary cold mixtures were all easier to apply and work with than the conventional cold mix. The products that advertised placement into wet holes all preformed well and provided equal performance in both wet and dry holes for the traffic and evaluation period used.

Seven materials identified in the literature review were tested in the laboratory to develop information on their strength and cure requirements. Accelerated high alumina cement, magnesium phosphate cement, three commercial asphalt products and unsurfaced, well compacted aggregate were recommended for field testing as the most promising small crater repair materials. Book excerpt: "The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) H-106 maintenance experiment and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Long-Term Monitoring (LTM) of Pavement Maintenance Materials Test Sites project studied the repair of partialdepth spalls in concrete pavements. The purpose of partial-depth spall repair is to restore a pavement's structural integrity, improve its ride quality, and extend its serviceable life. Highway agencies spend a large amount of time and money annually performing partial-depth spall repairs, both as temporary and permanent fixes. Frequently, the repairs are not made as efficiently as desired or do not perform as long as intended. The primary consequences are added disruption to traffic, more exposure of patching crews to traffic, and additional maintenance expenditures. The purpose of this study, then, was to address the merits and deficiencies of current spall repair materials, designs, and practices. The study evaluated the relative performance of selected patching materials, as well as the effect of selected repair methods. The study also examined repair material properties and tests that correlate well with field performance. This report documents the entire portland cement concrete (PCC) partial-depth spall repair study, including the installation of 30 unique repair types (i.e., combinations of patching material and patching method) at 4 different test sites, the laboratory testing of experimental repair materials, and the 7-year performance monitoring of the various partial-depth repairs. It also discusses the results of comprehensive statistical analyses conducted on material performance and laboratory testing data. Book excerpt: This report describes laboratory and field tests conducted using a new fiber stabilization technique for sands. Laboratory unconfined compression tests using 2-in. long monofilament polypropylene fibers to stabilize a poorly graded (SP) sand showed an optimum fiber content of 1 percent (by weight). Field test sections were constructed and traffic tested using simulated C-130 aircraft traffic (30,000-lb tire load at 100-psi tire pressure) and military truck traffic (5-ton military cargo truck loaded to a gross weight of 41,600 lb). Test results showed that sand fiber stabilization over a sand subgrade supported over 1,000 passes of a C-130 tire load with less than 2 in. of rutting. The top 4 in. of the sand fiber layer was lightly stabilized with Road Oyl to provide a wearing surface. Based on limited truck traffic tests, an 8-in.-thick sand-fiber layer, surfaced with a spray application of Road Oyl, would support substantial amounts of military truck traffic.
