  • Pages : 33 pages

Download or read book Alternative Pentatonics written by Graham Tippett and published by Graham Tippett. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I actually wrote this book as a practice guide for myself because I wanted a way to get different and outside sounds using pentatonic scales, as well as to improve my chops and have a huge variety of new sounds at my fingertips to play over the chords you see 90% of the time such as major/major7, minor/minor7, and dominant chords, among others. As well as being a scales book Alternative Pentatonics is also a method to practice improvising over common chords using uncommon groups of five notes. Five notes are somewhere between an arpeggio and a scale, as well as being the ideal number of notes to craft some really nice phrasing (in my opinion), as I’m sure you realized when you first learned your minor pentatonic scale and started jamming over a 12-bar blues. This book contains 28 new pentatonic scales divided into chord types so that you’ll know exactly what chords you can use them over. For the intermediate player: this book will give you plenty of new and interesting options for playing over common chords and force you out of standard pentatonic scales and/or the major scale modes. For the more advanced player: this book could be more about exploring possibilities than learning scale patterns; in fact, I would suggest that advanced players avoid even remembering the patterns in this book. Instead, they can be used to explore the improvisational terrain and find new sounds, then filed away in your subconscious and allowed to seep into your playing while you’re in the throes of improvisation. So, if you’re stuck in a soloing rut or are looking for new sounds, outside sounds, exotic sounds, or even a few downright weird sounds, this is the book for you.

Book excerpt: A lot of students ask me how they can take their improvisation skills to the next level and move beyond pentatonic scales and into modes and arpeggios. My response is to tell them not to abandon pentatonic scales in favor of modes and other soloing devices, but to use them as a springboard and a solid foundation from which to expand their harmonic awareness. If you play rock, blues and even jazz, you’ll be using pentatonic scales for the rest of your life, so there’s no need to discard them! In this book, we’ll be using the much-loved minor pentatonic scale as the basis for learning and having a quick way to access the modes of the major scale, as well as the basic seventh chord arpeggios. This means that when you go to improvise, you'll have a vast array of options with which to go beyond pentatonic soloing. Work through this book daily and I guarantee you a smooth and painless transition from pentatonics to incorporating modes and arpeggios into your playing.

Book Guitar Hacks

  • Pages : 24 pages

Download or read book Guitar Hacks written by Graham Tippett and published by Graham Tippett. This book was released on 2017-04-16 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3NPS (three-note-per-string) scales, as used by legions of guitarists but popularized mainly by Joe Satriani, are one of the most efficient ways to navigate the fretboard and get your scales down IF you follow the guidelines in this book. As the name suggests, a 3NPS scale is any scale that contains three notes on each string, and as you'll see in this eBook, this makes for a very consistent way to map out scales on the guitar fretboard. What we’ve done here is revamped the 3NPS scale system and turned it into an incredibly effective means to learn a wide variety of scales all over the fretboard by streamlining the number of patterns, as well as the picking system. This is not a scale theory book, and contains no pentatonic scales. This is a quick and dirty (and very effective) method for learning 3NPS scales all over the fretboard; something to work on in the woodshed. It will improve your picking technique and speed. It does not require a great amount of thinking as you only need to learn two picking patterns, which is really one in two directions, and only three scale patterns instead of the usual seven per scale.

Book excerpt: Now is the time to get hip with some insanely fun, playable, exotic pentatonics! A practical guide for all musicians, 25 Pentatonics introduces the reader to 25 pentatonic scale formulas that will fit over various chords, modes, and scales commonly used in jazz harmony. With its goal set to helping musicians expand their melodic and harmonic vocabularies, this book explores many altered five-note scales beyond the well-known unaltered major and minor forms. Notated with numbers and alphabets instead of standard music notations for a more flexible and streamlined format for transposition, the pentatonic scale formulas and examples presented by the author are applicable to different clefs, ranges, instruments, and voices. Contents in the book include an overview discussing the characteristics of the major, minor, and altered pentatonic scales; a table specifying pentatonics derived from the scale degrees of nine scales commonly used in jazz harmony; diagrams illustrating each pentatonic scale formula (with C assigned to Note 1) as a geometric shape inside a chromatic circle, thereby enabling readers to visualize intervallic patterns and symmetrical axes; profiles analyzing the elements and properties of 25 pentatonic scale formulas (based on C root), with information about 3-note chords (triads), 4-note chords, 5-note chords, voicings, scale sources, musical applications, and harmonic implications; charts outlining 25 pentatonic scale formulas in all keys; and a table listing pentatonics for major and minor 2-5-1 chord progressions, with examples presented in the key of C. For those seeking new ideas, fresh sounds, and another tool to add to their musical toolbox, the pentatonic scale formulas discussed in the book could serve as seeds and building blocks for melodies and harmonies that weave inside and outside underlying harmonic structures. Similarly, the book could be used as a supplementary reference manual for improving musicianship or as a source of inspiration for artistic creations that bring intellectual, emotional, and musical satisfactions to both the music makers and the listeners. Regardless of musical genres and styles, any musician studying the concepts and formulas examined in 25 Pentatonics would be able to unlock and access those unique five-note tonal palettes to jazz up the melodic phrases and harmonic textures in his/her compositions and improvisations, elevating the individual's creativity to a new level. ***This book might just be that "secret sauce" you have been looking for to crafting your juicy licks and signature sound. Book The Two Position Guitar Scale System

Download or read book The Two Position Guitar Scale System written by Graham Tippett and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previously the Intermediate Book, 'Scales and Arpeggios' has been painstakingly updated and revised in order to build on the '2 Position Guitar Scale System: An Introduction' Book (also available on Amazon Kindle) by expanding the reach of the 2 Position System to include how to change between scales, open position scales, how to stack the positions to form larger ones, and a new section which incorporates arpeggios into the system. The premise of this system has always been to focus on the musical aspect of scales, and now arpeggios, instead of the endless memorization of patterns and permutations you get with other systems such the CAGED and 3NPS ones, which means there's far too much time wasted before they become useful. Don't get me wrong, this is not a book of shortcuts. You'll still have to put the work in to get good results, but know that we've reduced that amount of 'work', or 'woodshedding' by about 80%. What you'll get from this system is a profound insight into how the guitar, in standard tuning, can be understood to effortlessly learn the tools for confident improvisation: scales and arpeggios.
