Book Christ faith and Abraham in Galatians 3 4

Download or read book Christ faith and Abraham in Galatians 3 4 written by Johnathan F. Harris and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On what basis are Gentile Christians justified and full inheriting members of Abraham’s family? By being circumcised and keeping the Torah? Paul answers by reinterpreting the Abraham narrative in light of the Christ-event as a story of two siblings. True Abrahamic children are those whose Spirit-wrought life arises, as God promised Abraham, from the event of Christ-faith. Like Isaac, they receive the life-giving power of the Spirit that is tethered to God’s promise and the event of eschatological faith. By contrast, those who, like Ishmael, are related to Abraham only by means of the flesh are slaves and not heirs.

Download or read book Human Embrace written by Ronald L. Hall and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from S&øren Kierkegaard's insight that fully accepting the human condition requires one to live with the persistent temptation to escape from it, Ronald Hall finds similar concerns reflected in the work of two modern-day philosophers, Stanley Cavell and Martha Nussbaum, who equally find in a philosophy of love and marriage the key to understanding how humans may achieve happiness in the acceptance of their humanity. All three thinkers follow a &"logic of paradox&" in showing how success in the human quest to be human depends crucially on the struggle humans experience with the ever-present opportunities to pursue alternative paths. What Kierkegaard called &"living existentially&" can be achieved only after confronting and refusing the possibilities of living in &"aesthetic,&" &"ethical,&" or even &"religious&" denial of one's true humanity. By creating this dialogue between the nineteenth-century Danish thinker and two eminent twentieth-century philosophers, Hall reveals the continuing relevance of Kierkegaard's thought to our own age and its cogency as an interpretation of the human predicament.

Book Holistic Christiantiy The Christianity of the 3rd Miillenium

Download or read book Holistic Christiantiy The Christianity of the 3rd Miillenium written by Advanced Apologetics Research and published by Dr. Samuel Inbaraja S . This book was released on 2024-10-22 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time when many aspects of faith are often reduced to simplistic or polarized viewpoints, Dr. James' "Holistic Christianity" brings together multiple dimensions of the Christian experience. The book examines the roles of reason, experience, relationships, emotions, faith, and spirituality, among others, to present a Christian worldview that addresses rational and empirical realities while remaining true to the spiritual and relational core of the faith. A Comprehensive Guide to Holistic Christian Living The book is divided into 31 chapters, each designed to challenge common reductionisms in contemporary Christian thought. Dr. James skillfully presents alternatives to extreme positions by exploring chapters such as: "Rational, Not Rationalism" – Discover the role of reason in faith without reducing Christianity to mere intellectualism. "Liberty, Not Legalism or License" – Understand how true freedom in Christ transcends rigid rules and moral laxity. "Empirical, Not Empiricism" – Appreciate the value of experience while acknowledging that not all spiritual truths can be empirically verified. "Test Everything" – Learn the biblical call to test and discern, balancing skepticism with faith. "Holistic Epistemology" – Embrace a balanced approach to knowledge that integrates reason, faith, experience, and tradition. "Holistic Christianity – Christianity of the 3rd Millennium" seeks to restore the fullness of the Christian faith by encouraging believers to avoid reductionistic approaches, such as rationalism, pragmatism, fideism, or emotionalism. Instead, the book presents a way to integrate the head and heart, combining doctrine, spiritual practice, and ethical living in a holistic framework that reflects the life and teachings of Jesus.

Book Karl Barth s Epistle to the Romans

Download or read book Karl Barth s Epistle to the Romans written by Christophe Chalamet and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Barth’s commentary on Paul’s epistle to the Romans, in its two editions (1919 and 1922), is one of the most significant works published in Christian theology in the 20th century. This book, which landed “like a bombshell on the theologians’ playground,” still deserves close scrutiny one hundred years after its publication. In this volume, New Testament scholars, philosophers of religion and systematic theologians ponder the intricacies of Barth’s “expressionistic” commentary, pointing out the ways in which Barth interprets Paul’s epistle for his own day, how this actualized interpretation of the apostle’s message challenged the theology of Barth’s time, and how some of the insights he articulated in 1919 and in 1922 have shaped Christian theology up to our day. With his commentary, the young Swiss pastor paved the way for a renewed, intensely theological interpretation of the Scriptures. The volume thus centers of some of the key themes which run through Barth’s commentary: faith as divine gift beyond any human experience or psychological data, the Easter event as the turning point of the world’s history, God’s judgment and mercy and God’s one Word in Jesus Christ. This volume represents a major contribution to the interpretation of Karl Barth’s early thought.

Book Saved By Faithfulness How The Covenant Shapes Our Understanding of Salvation

Download or read book Saved By Faithfulness How The Covenant Shapes Our Understanding of Salvation written by Mark Skillin and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-09-21 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelical Christianity has long been founded on the theological tradition of "justification by faith alone." This is the heart of the Protestant gospel. But how close is it to the Gospel revealed in Scripture? In Saved by Faithfulness, Mark Skillin highlights the interpretational problems that emerge when one holds to a faith alone paradigm. He talks about the importance of the concept of covenant in Scripture, and demonstrates through a survey of the biblical covenants that God has always placed faith and obedience in very close relationship to each other as necessary for the salvation of His people. Saved by Faithfulness challenges centuries of Scriptural interpretation and consequent church practice which have enshrined a distorted gospel, with far reaching consequences for the church. It is a call to return to faithful biblical interpretation and faithful Christian lives.

Book Karl Barth on Faith

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brandon K. Watson
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2024-03-18
  • ISBN : 3111273385
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Karl Barth on Faith written by Brandon K. Watson and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-03-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume examines an underdeveloped component in the theology of Karl Barth. Specifically, the work asks: how, and to what extent, can faith be understood as ontologically proper to the trinitarian becoming of God? The work argues for an ontological grounding of faith in the becoming of God. To do so, Watson performs an in-depth examination of Barth's understanding of the concept of faith. Using Barth's threefold movement of revelation, the work contends God can be thought of as the subject (Glaubender), predicate (Glaube), and object (Geglaubte) of faith. Barth's theological exposition of Jesus as subject and object of election offers a promising proposal for how faith is ontologically understood. At the same time, the argument brings to the fore a crucial component of Barth's theological program, namely, the concept of recognition (Anerkennung). God's recognizing faith is then conceived as the condition of the possibility of human faith. Drawing on Barth's entire oeuvre, Watson offers an understanding of the divine becoming of faith that opens possibilities for thinking systematically about the realization of the corresponding human faith.

Book The Faith of the Christian Church

Download or read book The Faith of the Christian Church written by Tyron Inbody and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005-04-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tyron Inbody has taught the basics of Christian theology for more than twenty-five years. Having seen over the years what issues and questions his students bring to class, he now offers this engaging, accessible introduction to all the major beliefs of the Christian faith. Meant especially but not exclusively for readers new to theology, Inbody's Faith of the Christian Church covers twelve traditional areas of Christian teaching: theology, revelation, faith, God, creation, suffering and evil, humankind, Jesus Christ, salvation, church, sacraments, and the end times. Inbody also dives into provocative topics not usually treated in introductory texts -- creationism, the devil, miracles, the virgin birth, and more. The book's broad-ranging perspective, which intentionally defies labels, commends it to individuals and small groups from many church traditions. Quote boxes and illustrations drawn from popular culture make the text visually interesting and enjoyable to read. Inbody does not hide his own stance on issues but presents a full range of interpretations and openly points readers to other possibilities they can pursue. The Faith of the Christian Church offers just enough questions to provoke reflection and just enough answers to encourage readers to form their own grasp on the Christian faith.

Book Reduplication

Download or read book Reduplication written by Sharon Inkelas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-02-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking new study takes a novel approach to reduplication, a phenomenon whereby languages use repetition to create new words. Sharon Inkelas and Cheryl Zoll argue that the driving force in reduplication is identity at the morphosyntactic, not the phonological level, and present a new model of reduplication - Morphological Doubling Theory - that derives the full range of reduplication patterns. This approach shifts the focus away from the relatively small number of cases of phonological overapplication and underapplication, which have played a major role in earlier studies, to the larger class of cases where base and reduplicant diverge phonologically. The authors conclude by arguing for a theoretical shift in phonology, which entails more attention to word structure. As well as presenting the authors' pioneering work, this book also provides a much-needed overview of reduplication, the study of which has become one of the most contentious in modern phonological theory.

Book Why Am I Still a Christian

Download or read book Why Am I Still a Christian written by Joseph A. Buijs and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why am I a Christian? Why is anyone a Christian or remain a Christian? These questions can readily occur in our increasingly secular environment. A prevalent mind set suggests that there is no point to being Christian: that it is a cultural remnant of our upbringing, a belief system out of step with enlightened thinking, a moral code at odds with contemporary society. Does it, then, still make sense to adhere to a Christian tradition? Is it reasonable to be and remain Christian when atheistic criticisms imply otherwise? A philosophical excursion explores these questions under the headings of Tradition, Reason, and Faith. It critically discusses the what and the why of being Christian. It differentiates explaining how we may have acquired faith and Christian commitment from justifying why it may nevertheless be reasonable to have faith and to remain Christian. A personal narrative shows how approaches to these questions changed over the course of the authors personal life and academic career teaching philosophy. Why am I or why is anyone a Christian? Because, as the author concludes, it can be a reasonable choice to adopt and retain a Christian faith commitment.

Book A Mature Faith

Download or read book A Mature Faith written by D. J. Louw and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Mature Faith is an attempt to develop an anthropology for pastoral care and counseling which deals with both Christian perspective and important data from the human sciences, such as psychology. This book presents an integrative approach which views spirituality and our human quest for meaning as central to a psycho-pastoral approach. A doctrine of persons is designed which deals with both the dimension of creation (image of God) and of salvation (the new being in Christ). This book argues for an understanding of human beings in terms of their human identity before God (Coram Deo) as well as the empowerment of persons by the gift and fruit of the Spirit. Hence the importance of a pneumatological perspective on maturity and adulthood. The interplay between God-images and our human selfunderstanding is discussed. In this regard the question about diagnosis in pastoral counseling and the technique of storytelling receive attention. A pastoral hermeneutics which tries to understand our human predicament in terms of both the social and cultural context as well as our relationship with God is fundamental to the models presented in this book. In spiritual direction, the basic assumption is that God-images and the implication of different perceptions of God on life issues should play a decisive role. In terms of our human quest for meaning within a secularized society, the following metaphor for God is proposed: God as our "Soul Friend". The book is written for priests, ministers and pastoral caregivers involved in counseling and spiritual direction. Its main focus is on professional training within an academic setting. It will also be useful for the training of lay members within a congregational setting.

Book Romance Phonetics and Phonology

Download or read book Romance Phonetics and Phonology written by Mark Gibson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores several recurring topics in Romance phonetics and phonology, with a special focus on the segment, syllable, word, and phrase levels of analysis. An international team of experts and junior researchers present research that ranges from the low-level mechanical processes involved in speech production and perception to high-level representation and computation, based on data from across the Romance language family, including from varieties that are less widely studied. The book is divided into five parts. In the first, chapters present acoustic studies, examining topics such as Italian anaphonesis and voiceless fricative sibilants in Galician, while chapters in part two turn to articulatory studies of features including three-consonant onsets in Romanian and rhotic variation in Tuscan Italian. The focus of the third part is perception, and includes studies of perceived phrasing in French and perceptual cues for individual voice quality, while part four examines phonological issues such as Galician mid-vowel reduction and sibilant voicing in Spanish. Chapters in the final part of the volume look at the effects of production and perception on issues in language acquisition. The book draws on a range of experimental and methodological approaches and will be of interest not only to scholars of Romance linguistics but also to all those working in phonetics and phonology from graduate level upwards.

Book The Claim of Humanity in Christ

Download or read book The Claim of Humanity in Christ written by Alexandra Sophie Radcliff and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today much preaching and teaching throws people back upon themselves to earn their relationship with God and to try to achieve by their own efforts the kind of person that they ought to be. In The Claim of Humanity in Christ, Alexandra Radcliff counters the Torrances' critics to show the significance of their controversial understanding of salvation for the interface between systematic and pastoral theology. Radcliff then constructively extends the implications of the Torrances' work to a liberating doctrine of sanctification. The Christian life is conceived as the free and joyful gift of sharing by the Spirit in the Son's intimate communion with the Father whereby we are turned out of ourselves to reflect the reality of who we are in Christ.

Book Justification and Sanctification

Download or read book Justification and Sanctification written by Peter Toon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the sixteenth century the Western Church was rent asunder by the quarrel over justification. Today scholars from churches on both sides of the controversy are carefully rethinking the question. Dr. Toon shows how contemporary biblical scholarship and exegesis are attempting to resolve the thorny question of justification without compromising the integrity of either side. Provocative and far-reaching in its analysis and conclusions, Justification and Sanctification gives the student an invaluable introduction while providing the scholar a fresh look at the issue.
