Download or read book Albrecht D rer in the Collection of the National Gallery of Victoria written by Albrecht Dürer and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albrecht Durer epitomizes the Northern Renaissance and is one of the most celebrated artists of all time. But despite our substantial knowledge about him, he remains elusive. Beginning in 1891, the National Gallery of Victoria started making acquisitions sufficiently significant to make its collections of Durer one of the most important in the world. Over 150 b-w plates, a four-page fold out color plate and essays on the artist's life, 15th century life in Nuremberg during one of the great transforming periods of European history and on the book arts make this an invaluable addition to Durer literature. Book excerpt: "A comprehensive catalogue covering all aspects of Albrecht Dürer’s extensive oeuvre has been published in conjunction with the exhibition. As a means of elucidating the suspenseful interplay between Dürer and his contemporaries, the catalogue places Dürer’s works in their historical context and deliberately juxtaposes them with works by artists of the same period. The reader thus gains very direct insight into the superior technical mastery as well as the intensity of Dürer’s art."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer is one of the most important figures of the German Renaissance. This book accompanies the first major exhibition of the Whitworth art gallery’s outstanding Dürer collection in over half a century. It offers a new perspective on Dürer as an intense observer of the worlds of manufacture, design and trade that fill his graphic art. Artworks and artefacts examined here expose understudied aspects of Dürer’s art and practice, including his attentive examination of objects of daily domestic use, his involvement in economies of local manufacture and exchange, the microarchitectures of local craft and, finally, his attention to cultures of natural and philosophical inquiry and learning.

Book excerpt: Focusing on the ways his art and persona were valued and criticized by writers, collectors, and artists subsequent to his death, this book examines the reception of the works of Albrecht D?rer. Andrea Bubenik's analysis highlights the intensive and international interest in D?rer's art and personality, and his developing role as a paragon in art historiography, in conjunction with the proliferation of portraits after his likeness. The author traces carefully how D?rer's paintings, prints, drawings and theoretical writings traveled widely, and were appropriated into new contexts and charged with different meanings. Drawing on inventories and correspondences and taking collecting practices into account, Bubenik establishes who owned what by D?rer in the 16th and 17th centuries, and characterizes the key locations where interest in D?rer peaked (especially the courts of Maximilian I in Munich, and Rudolf II in Prague). Bubenik treats the emergent artistic appropriations of D?rer-borrowings from or transformations of his originals-in conjunction with contemporary sources on art theory. The volume includes illustrations of numerous imitative works after D?rer. As well as being the first book to fully address the early reception of the most important of German Renaissance artists, Reframing Albrecht D?rer shows how appropriation is a crucial concept for understanding artistic practice during the early modern period.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Engravings and Etchings by Albrecht Dürer: With an Introduction; November 5th to November 30th, 1908 But when his mind was consciously working itcame finally to work onlyin the grooves of the canon. The following quotation from Melanchthon shows that it is doubtful if he realized the deadening effects of his studies on his work, while at the same time it shows up most completely the character of the man. 'i remember that Albrecht Diirer, the painter, a man excelling in talent and virtue, used to say that when a youth he liked bright and florid pictures, and that he could not choose but rejoice when he con templated the brilliancy and variety of the coloring. But that after he began to View Nature as an old man and endeavored to look in upon her native face, then he under stood that her simplicity was the greatest glory of art. The which, however, as he could not wholly attain unto, he said that he was no longer an admirer of his own works, as once he had been, but that he rather groaned in looking at his paintings and thinking of his own infirmity. At the end he did portraits simple, direct, uninspired, and, as engravings, magnificent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer is one of the most important figures of the German Renaissance. In a series of essays and shorter texts, leading scholars offer insight into how a changing Renaissance material world, shaped by expanding European and global networks, helped spark artistic creativity and major innovations in the production of art and craft in Dürer's native Nuremberg and beyond. This catalogue also includes an in-depth study of the Whitworth's recently restored pietà sculpture and brings a new perspective to the history of collecting Dürer's art in the northwest of England and to the role that local collectors - many themselves involved in trade, industry and design - played in amassing one of the country's most significant holdings of this Renaissance artist's graphic work.
