Enclosures are even more important in public open space design within a context of urbanization and densely developed cities. However, only a limited number of spatial identifies have been specified and studied, and studies on the topic have rarely been pragmatic. Under such circumstances, spatial identities and their relationship with enclosure should be elaborated. An integral and objective way to measure and estimate enclosure of a certain space based on these identities is needed. In addition, the effects of enclosure on users have not received sufficient attention and need systematically exploration. Health outcomes are on the specific focus in the current study. Based on previous studies, 18 measurable spatial indicators related to enclosure are selected for further study. Using factor analysis on a sample size of 116 open spaces within or near public housing estates in Hong Kong, 11 of these 18 indicators are identified as being crucial for spatial enclosure. Four principal factors (i.e., scale, H/D relationship, gap, and shape) cover 80.94% of the information on the 11 indicators. Based on Cronbach''s alpha, these factors are proven reliable. The enclosures are further estimated based on the 11 indicators and coefficients using factor analysis. With a subset of 26 spaces, the estimated enclosure is proven as valid and reliable after examination of Cronbach''s alpha by 200 untrained (without architecture-related professional training) and 63 trained (with architecture-related professional training) subjects. Major spatial indicators of enclosure are further studied for detecting potential health-related influence on subjects. Methods of questionnaire survey, quasi-experimental questionnaire survey, and observation are employed. The examined three aspects of health outcomes are physical, psychological and social. Based on 178 untrained and 63 trained valid samples in questionnaire survey, statistic correlation between spatial enclosure and health outcomes are identified, although still general and insufficient in explaining the exact relationship between them. Specifically, brighter, larger, more coherent, mysterious or legible space may be more inspiring for feeling or behavior that leads to positive health outcomes, whereas complexity does not seem to be correlated with the three categories of health feedback. With a sample of 109 college students, a quasi-experimental questionnaire survey confirms that perceived spatial enclosure and feelings can be influenced by spatial identities of scale of space, height, width and density of enclosing materials. Such results further confirm and elaborate the influence of enclosure on mental health. According to observations in 7 out of the 26 spaces, certain enclosure characteristics, such as foliage and overhead shelters, scale of immediate space and its visual extension, together with relationship between target space and its surrounding environment, are likely related with the emotions and behaviors of users. Thus, the effects of enclosure on the physical and social health of users are likely to be true. Although this study and its generalization have many limitations, it achieves two major goals and proposes several design implications for la

Book Public Spaces in Hong Kong Housing Estates

Download or read book Public Spaces in Hong Kong Housing Estates written by Tapan Dhar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About half of total population lives in public housing in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Housing Authority is committed to develop a highly interacted community and social network by improving the layout-design of public housing estates over decades. However, research suggests that the community interaction in housing estates in Hong Kong has been declining day by day. This study focuses on public space focusing on outdoor communal spaces in public housing layouts of different prototypes and periods. Attributes of public spaces, that impact on neighborly interaction within estates in Hong Kong, have been highlighted for investigation here. This monograph sequentially aims to look into the following research questions - How does a layout design influence public spaces and impact on neighborly interaction? What makes a space successful to the people of different groups, ages, and interests? The answers of these questions would help the design-professionals and the city-authorities to shed some light on public spaces in dealing with new and existing housing layouts at the neighborhood level in Hong Kong as well as in the world.

People living in community merely interact with each other and not sustain neighborliness. Social interactions in neighborhood level contribute the feelings of belonging and sense of community which are important factors to build up social capital. According to environment psychology, physical environment is a crucial mechanism to influence social interaction. Then open space as focal point of neighborhood environment may have important effects on neighborly social interaction. The goal of this dissertation is to examine the inter-connection of open space and social interaction and provide better open space planning strategies and design principles to boost neighborly social interaction. Firstly open space's effect in social interaction is identified in theoretical framework. Then current open space planning and social interaction pattern of Hong Kong are reviewed in empirical background. Based on theoretical framework and empirical background, analysis of this study is launched with case studies of two public housing estate. The analysis is divided into two parts. First part is to confirm that open space with good quality could be act as catalyst to boost neighborly social interaction. Second part is to discover appropriate design of open space to stimulate social interaction. Then recommendations are provided, including strategies for establishing comprehensive open space planning and open space design guideline in terms of enhancing social interaction. Abstract: The Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA), the developer of Public Rental Housing (PRH), is the largest developer of housing in Hong Kong. PRH houses about one-third of the population and the scale of each estate development is sizable which would make strong impact on the living environment if they are not planned or managed well. In the coming years, the target annual supply of PRH contributes almost 40% of the new residential units supply in Hong Kong. The construction of these 40% housing units will follow the current sustainable approach. It will have strong impact on our environment if the current sustainable approach is not performing well. In the study, the environmental sustainability performance of the newly constructed PRH is going to be evaluated to investigate the successfulness of the current sustainable approach. Green Urbanism, a concept that arose in 1990s to promote the development of socially and environmentally sustainable city districts which make effort to minimize the use of energy at each stage of the city's or district's lifecycle, is reviewed in the study to provided bas. The environmental sustainability performance on the planning and design of PRH in Hong Kong are evaluated using the principle of green urbanism. The evaluations are divided into 2 parts, zero-emission and zero-waste, which covered different aspects in environmental sustainability. Three newly constructed PRH, Upper Ngau Tau Kok Estate, Sau Mau Ping South Estate and Lam Tin Estate, are selected for the evaluation to investigate the successfulness of the sustainable approach which has been adopted in this decade. These housing estates are selected because of their outstanding sustainable achievements which are the benchmark of the future PRH developments. Based on the results and findings in the evaluation of the environmental sustainability performance of the planning and design of PRH, suggestions are provided for future sustainable public housing developments in order to create a better living environment in Hong Kong. Book High Rise Living in Asian Cities

Download or read book High Rise Living in Asian Cities written by Belinda Yuen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to fill a knowledge gap in the study of contemporary high-rise living. While there has been much documentation on the engineering and technological aspects of tall buildings, relatively little has been written about the social and livability of high-rise. Much less is written about Asian cities even though Asia is the current hotbed of high-rise development. Even though traditional discourse of high-rise housing is not always positive, new forces are redefining its place in 21st century urbanity. Many cities around the world are reembracing high-rise in urban agenda under current narrative of sustainable development. High-rise is fast becoming a priority area in international research agenda. The quest is for livable and sustainable high-rise development. Against the background of current trends--globalization, urbanization, mixed-use development, and new-built taller buildings in inner city areas in both developed and developing countries, this book examines the software: design, economics, estate management, legal and property rights, physical environment, planning, community development, and social dimensions of high-rise living. Analysis is with the widely acclaimed successful high-rise public housing in Hong Kong and Singapore to understand the advantages and worries of high-rise living, and to distill the key points and lessons in the making of a ‘good’ highrise living environment. Hong Kong and Singapore have been constructing high-rise for more than four decades each. The majority of their population has moved to live in high-rise, selecting to live high-rise, and registering consistently high residential satisfaction. The height of apartment buildings in both cities continues to rise. The tallest is anticipated to be 70-storey. It is the contention of this book that contrary to earlier common negative discourses on public high-rise living, the high-rise environment may yet offer urban residents a satisfying dwelling experience. Leading housing academics, researchers and practitioners in the two cities have contributed to this book. This book presents a timely contribution to our understanding of a widening urban phenomenon that will affect a growing number of the world’s population.

Abstract: It has been observed that many older people after retirement would like to visit various green open spaces in the city to exercise, social and doing different leisure activities (Lam, et. al., 2004; Wong, 2009). However, although there are 40% of land area in Hong Kong are recognized as Country Parks and well managed by the government, with the rapid urban development with enormous high-rise buildings has turned Hong Kong in a "concrete forest," only few decent open spaces can be found in the metropolitan area. With the continuous growing aging population, there is a need for us to review whether the important urban open spaces can meet the needs of changing population. The goal of the dissertation aims at find out the existing problems in planning and design of public open space and find out the needs of the elderly, so that better public open space can be provided to suit the elderly's expectation. The analysis is therefore divided into two parts by reviewing on the planning and management of public open space framework and the outcome of provision and distribution of open spaces, as well as finding out the use pattern and expectation from the elderly on public open space. Based on the findings of this project, recommendations are provided for the planning and management authority to improve the existing public open spaces in order to suit the needs and expectations of the elderly. It includes a better cooperation between different departments to carry out a more comprehensive open space strategy and better design of open spaces on external linkages and internal landscape and facilities provision. Abstract: Modern cities do not only aim at focusing on economic development solely, but they also need to provide high quality of urban living environment which could achieve social, economic and environmental sustainability. Public open space constitutes an indispensible part in achieving this planning objective. Nevertheless, open space is not a unitary planning concept. It has been being constantly redefined to suit changing social and economic needs. This study investigates the development of land supply and land-use planning of public open space in Hong Kong. It attempts to examine how open space was understood, planned, and provided in different periods in Hong Kong. Open space is presumed to be influenced by the interplay of three main social forces, namely the government, the capitalists, and the people. The interplay of the three forces changes in different periods of time in Hong Kong, resulting in the changing meaning and transformation of open space in the aspects of locations, forms, distributions, and ways of provisions. My key arguments are as follows: In the pre-Second World War colonial period, extraction was regarded as the primary objective of the colonial government. Since the colonial atmosphere shared the idea of earning from re-exporting trade and temporal stay, public open space, except for private leisure facilities, was not truly a concern of any of the social groups. While recreational opportunities and open space were still necessary to attract foreign investments and provide political functions, the colonial government provided open space in a residual manner, utilizing urban fringe areas of Victoria City and existing land-uses for open space functions. To maximize the use of open space, though the government was reluctant to provide, open space was utilized for political functions to preach social conforming behaviours and Western lifestyle to the Chinese immigrants as well as to new Chinese generations. The post-Second World War open space development was characterized by an expansion of the scope of open space, as well as political reform of the municipal governments and the planning institution. Triggered by the large influx of Chinese refugees that migrated to Hong Kong and the rising population of the local-born Chinese youngsters, elected representatives were introduced to the municipal councils. These elected representatives endeavoured to urge the government to provide open space where available, persuading the government by giving new meanings to open space. The planning institution, however, continued to plan open space in a residual manner. Inspired by the Abercrombie Plan, open space was planned towards the countryside and new forms of open space were introduced to expand the scope of open space. The contemporary pattern of public open space is examined by quantitative analyses. Three kinds of open space are examined, namely zoned open space, administered public open space, and public open space within private developments. Results show that large-scale zoned open spaces tend to cluster in urban fringe areas and countryside, whereas zoned open spaces in urban areas tend to be fragmentary. Waterfront and coastal areas, whether in urban or rural areas, are commonly utilized for open space purposes. These findings echo the planning strategy, aiming at shifting open space from the inner urban areas to the urban fringe and rural areas. Admin

Abstract: Impact of layout design on neighborly interaction in public housing estate, Hong Kong ABSTRACT st To embrace 21 century need, people are becoming fast to faster. Not knowing the name of the neighbor is not a unfamiliar even at all. Like e-banking, teleshopping, e-business becoming so popular, some day the term 'e-neighbor' may be popular. Where people live physically very closely in same neighborhood, the use of the term 'e-neighbor' is quite unfortunate. To run parallel with the global e-race, the neighborly interaction in public housing estates is not reversed. Several researches identified the community interaction in public housing estates; Hong Kong is decreased day by day. Hong Kong Housing authority developed living standard, housing program chronologically from 1950's. Similarly, the layout design of the housing estates also improved phase to phase. Layout design negotiates and balances between the programmatic requirement of housing authority and context. How does layout design influence on recreational facilities provided by Hong Kong Housing Authority as well as the people use these? Can communal spaces influence resident to be interacted? I have tried to identify in this dissertation the characteristic of communal spaces especially in out door spaces that influence resident to interact with others. This dissertation also try to find out how resident in public housing estate can react the different type of communal spaces and I have formulated a set of criteria of communal space that impact on resident physically and spatially to interact. And finally I have developed a list of attributes to develop further layout design in future regarding the neighborly interaction. ii DHAR, Tapan Kumar 07 September, 2007 DOI: 10.5353/th_b3955877 Subjects: Public housing - China - Hong Kong Neighborhoods - China - Hong Kong Social interaction - China - Hong Kong

Abstract: There is growing interest in open space planning in city, which is believed to be one of the important factors in affecting the livability and sustainability of city. Open space planning is indeed a multi-dimensional topic that involves different aspects of research focus. However, it is found that there is a research gap in the morphological analysis of Hong Kong's open space with its adjourning zoning. Morphological analysis is essential in achieving a deeper understanding in the relationship between open space with its adjourning zones, which ultimately relates to urban justice that whether there is serious geographical difference in the provision of open space. Hong Kong's case is notably of high research value because of its hyper-density both in terms of population and buildings which comes from the scarce developable land resource, creating financial incentive for the government to put lower priority to open space which is a non-revenue generating zoning. This paper first collects the statutory zoning data from the 131 Outline Zoning Plans and then analyzes it on the Geographical Information System, which in result can record the size of open space and its adjourning zones within the 50m buffer area of every open space in Hong Kong for subsequent morphological analysis. Based on the morphological analysis, this paper confirms that road (31%), high density residential development (22%) and government, institution and community zone (14%) are three zoning type comprising most of the area in the adjourning zoning of open space. Moreover, result shows that planners tend to provide mini-size open space, whose size is lower than the recommendation of local open space in Hong Kong Planning Standards and Guidelines (HKPSG), to decrease the deficit of local open space provision in order to achieve the provision standard set out in HKPSG. This study also confirms that planners are more generous in providing large-scale open space in New Development Areas than New Towns, which is regarded as an improvement in open space planning. Result also shows that planners have intentionally planned the harbourfront land to be open space as evidenced by the high ratio of zoned open space in the 50m buffer zone of harbourfront.
