Book Evolutionary Genetics of the Family Placobranchidae Mollusca Gastropoda Opisthobranchia Sacoglossa

Download or read book Evolutionary Genetics of the Family Placobranchidae Mollusca Gastropoda Opisthobranchia Sacoglossa written by Anna Lee Bass and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Members of the family Placobranchidae have been the focus of numerous studies because of their interesting physiological adaptations (kleptochemistry and kleptoplasty) and ecological associations with marine algae. More than 100 species have been described since the 1800's, but no determination of phylogenetic relationships in the family has occurred. DNA sequences from two mitochondrial genes (large subunit ribosomal and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) and one nuclear gene (Histone 3) were used to reconstruct relationships among 34 nominal species within the Placobranchidae. Strong support for terminal nodes was found using Bayesian phylogenetic methods; however, a "soft" polytomy was detected at internal nodes. In general, the results confirm the paraphyly of Elysia. Proposals for the designation of the genera, Thallepus Swainson, 1840 and Tridachia Deshayes, 1857 and delineation of species are presented. How intrinsic factors affect speciation rates in groups of animals has been a central focus in evolutionary biology. Adaptive radiation associated with food choice has been postulated for the opisthobranch order Sacoglossa. An increase in the rate of cladogenesis was detected within the family Placobranchidae and intrinsic factors such as larval development, kleptoplasty and food choice were investigated as potential key innovations. Ancestral state reconstruction of characters suggests that food choice played a dominant role in influencing speciation rate within the family Placobranchidae. Life history strategy may play an important role in structuring genetic variation throughout the geographic range of a species. Members of the sacoglossan family Placobranchidae Gray, 1840, exhibit variation in life history strategies such as feeding preference and degree of kleptoplasty that could be influential in population structuring. Three species, Elysia subornata Verrill, 1901, Elysia tuca Marcus and Marcus, 1967, and Elysia crispata Mörch, 1863 were sampled from several locations in an attempt to quantify genetic variation as indicated by cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequencing. Elysia crispata exhibited the highest degree of population subdivision followed by Elysia tuca and Elysia subornata. Nucleotide and haplotype diversity also revealed the same general ranking of species. Preliminary conclusions suggest that diversity in feeding preference and degree of kleptoplasty play significant roles in population subdivision of these species.

Book Nudibranch Sea Slug Identification

Download or read book Nudibranch Sea Slug Identification written by Terrence Gosliner and published by New World Publidcations. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015 three leading scientific experts on nudibranchs and sea slugs collaborated to produce a comprehensive guide for divers and scientists to the Indo-Pacific region. After only three years, Nudibranch and Sea Slug Identification Indo-Pacific has sold out and become outdated due to the discovery of new species and numerous changes to the taxonomy of these organisms. On 1 November 2018, a new 2nd Edition will be realeased -- updated and reorganised, including 185 new species. Among other features, the new edition includes additional photographs of species, an identification key, and an up-to-date classification. The Indo-Pacific represents the largest expanse of tropical ocean in the world, stretching from the Indian Ocean coast of southern Africa and the Red Sea to the central Pacific of the Hawaiian Islands, Easter Island and the Marquesas. This region supports the most diverse marine fauna of any place in the world for most groups of marine organisms. The nudibranchs and sea slugs are no exception to this rule; there are about 3,000 described species of these organisms in the world and at least 40% of these have been found exclusively in the Indo-Pacific tropics. This book illustrates 2,138 Indo-Pacific nudibranchs and sea slugs, including many undescribed species.

Book Evolutionary Patterns and Processes

Download or read book Evolutionary Patterns and Processes written by D. R. Lees and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution is the central theme of all biology. Researcarcch in the many branches of evolutionary study continues to flourish. This book, based on a symposium of the Linnean Society, discusses the diversity in currentevolutionary research. It approaches the subject ambitiously and from several angles, bringing ttogether eminent authors from a variety of disciplines paleontologists traditionally with a macroevolutionary bias, neontologists concentrating on microevolutionary processes, and those studying the very essence ofsses and those studying the very essence of evolution the process of speciation in living organisms. Evolutionary Patterns and Processes will appeal to a broad spectrum of professional biologistsworking in such fields as paleontology, population biology, and evolutionary genetics. Biologists will enjoy chapters by Stephen J. Gould, discovering in the much earlier work of Hugo de Vries parallels with his ideas on punctuational evolution; Guy Bush, considering why there are so many small animals; Peter Sheldon, examining detailed fossil trilobite sequences for evidence of microevolutionary processes and considering models of speciation; as well as others dealing with cytological, ecological, and behavioral processes leading to the evolution of new species. Book Origin and Evolutionary Radiation of the Mollusca

Download or read book Origin and Evolutionary Radiation of the Mollusca written by Malacological Society of London. Centenary Symposium and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mollusca are a large, diverse, and economically important group that ranges from slugs and snails through clams and oysters to octopus, squid, and cuttlefish. They are evolutionarily ancient and better known than most invertebrate groups because of their calcareous skeletons, which has led to their excellent preservation as fossils. This is a state-of-the-art summary of research into Molluscs and their evolution, including recent developments in phylogenetic analysis and molecular techniques. Since the last book on this topic was published in 1985, the vast amount of updated information found here should be on the bookshelf of every zoologist, evolutionary biologist, and taxonomist.
