Download or read book Miocene Paleosols and Ape Habitats of Pakistan and Kenya written by Greg John Retallack and published by New York : Oxford University Press ; Oxford [England] : Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the habitats of our apelike ancestors of the Miocene epoch -- some 7 to 20 million years ago -- are re-examined from the perspective of knowledge yielded by the buried fossil soils in which they have been found. Fossilized soils, or paleosols, are distinctive layers within a sedimentary or volcanic sequence, and they also can be clues to former ecosystems and other aspects of paleoenvironments. Here the author characterizes in detail some 20 kinds of paleosols from the Kenyan and Pakistani localities for the dryopithicane and ramapithicine apes made famous by L.S.B. Leakey and D.R. Pilbeam. The extensive evidence cited allows for the reassessment of vegetation and landscape features of ancient tropical sites that are the source of much of what is known about our remote Miocene ancestors. The text also provides a basis for understanding paleosols formed in all tropical climates and alluvial settings, and offers a model for future research on human evolution and major events in the geological history of soils. It is a valuable resource for paleontologists, anthropologists, and soil scientists.

Download or read book Asian Paleoanthropology written by Christopher J. Norton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-26 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a group of authors that address the question of the first out of Africa into Asia c. 2 Ma. The scope of the book is comprehensive as it covers almost every major region of Asia. The primary goal of this volume is to provide an updated synthesis of the current state of the Asian paleoanthropological and paleoenvironmental records. Papers include detailed studies of the theoretical constructs underlying the move out of Africa, including detailed reconstructions of the paleoenvironment and possible migration routes. Other papers detail the Plio-Pleistocene archaeological and hominin fossil records of particular regions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to shed light on the 'Out of Africa' problem by approaching it from a different angle and proposing when during the Late Pliocene and Early Pleistocene hominid migration was most feasible and along what pathways the migrations may have occured. It represents the first use of GIS to predict and model the potential migration pathways.
Download or read book Late Cenozoic Yushe Basin Shanxi Province China Geology and Fossil Mammals written by Richard H Tedford and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Late Cenozoic Yushe Basin, Shanxi Province, China embodies the bulk of our knowledge on successions of terrestrial vertebrates in the northern part of East Asia. Everything we know about Asian mammals of the last 6 million years has a historical basis in the documentation of the geology of Yushe. This volume introduces the basin in its geological setting, describes the succession of fossiliferous strata, and shows how it is dated. It develops an unsurpassed level of precision for its age control. Geological maps and stratigraphic sections provide the backbone for individual studies to follow on varied fossil groups. The volume explores the history of exploration of the last century in Yushe Basin and places development of paleontology there into the context of the birth of the modern epoch of science in China.
