Download or read book Evansville The World War II Years written by Darrel E. Bigham and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War II changed the face of Evansville, Indiana. In December 1941, the city was still recovering from the Great Depression, yet within three months, a series of blockbuster announcements transformed the region. Several corporations received major defense contracts to manufacture parts and ammunitions, while two new installations were launched: a shipyard to construct Landing Ship Tanks and a factory to manufacture P-47 airplanes. Industrial employment rose dramatically, producing social, economic, and racial tensions as thousands of newcomers poured into a city that lacked adequate housing and public facilities. The citizens of Evansville persevered, and most workers stayed following the end of the war. One federal official commented that the city--not just its many defense plants--deserved the coveted Army-Navy "E" (for excellence) award.

Book excerpt: As we approach a new century and a new millennium, we should consider how people in American communities dreamed about and participated in the coming of the twentieth century 100 years ago. The focus of this work is Evansville––100 years ago the only emerging metropolis between Louisville and St. Louis, and then, as now, the radial center of a hinterland stretching in all directions from 75 to 125 miles. The book illustrates how the city landscape changed because of the early industrial era, how people made a living, how people related to each other, and how they spent their leisure time. About one-fifth of the images in this collection focus on the residents of the Evansville region; the Tri-State of southwestern Indiana, western Kentucky, and southern Illinois, which has been Evansville’s service area since the 1850s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Wabash and Erie Canal to the Faultless Caster Factory, Evansville has seen much of its history disappear. In the early twentieth century, vestiges of old Evansville like the B'nai Israel temple and Coal Mine Hill gave way to a modern city. Numerous changes in the thirty years following World War II altered the physical appearance of the city, including the removal of the old Central High School, Assumption Cathedral, Gear Town, and more. Less physical but nevertheless vital history like the struggle over Civil Rights in Evansville has been overlooked and, until now, lost. Weaving together a captivating fast-paced account illustrated with over eighty images, award-winning Evansville historian Dr James MacLeod tells the fascinating story of what was lost, what came in its place, and what was preserved against the odds.

Book excerpt: Between the years 1942 and 1945, the Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company, Shipbuilding Division, constructed 167 LST's (Landing Ship,Tank) at the Evansville Shipyards. This book details the history of the shipyard, it tells the stories of the ships built there, and the brave crews who sailed them off to war. The book contains significant historical text, and is illustrated with diagrams and photographs, many never before published. The book is now in its fourth printing and continues to be popular with former shipyard workers, former LST crewmen, and the families of these men and women. In July, 2003, the USS LST 325 sailed majestically up the Ohio River to Evansville, Indiana. During her 11-day visit over 35,000 people toured this historic ship. While the LST 325 was a product of a Philadelphia shipyard, it is virtually identical to the LSTs that were constructed in Evansville's "Cornfield Shipyard." The return of an LST to Evansville's riverfront sparked a renewed interest in the Evansville Shipyard and the 167 LSTs built here. Therefore, in honor of the over 70,000 men and women who worked at the Evansville Shipyard and the thousands of brave men who served on the ships in World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam, we are proud to present this edition of "A Cornfield Shipyard " by Andrew L. Clark.12? x 9?136 Pages

Book Memorials of the Great War in Britain

Download or read book Memorials of the Great War in Britain written by Alex King and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking as its focus memorials of the First World War in Britain, this book brings a fresh approach to the study of public symbols by exploring how different motives for commemorating the dead were reconciled through the processes of local politics to create a widely valued form of collective expression. It examines how the memorials were produced, what was said about them, how support for them was mobilized and behaviour around them regulated. These memorials were the sites of contested, multiple and ambiguous meanings, yet out of them a united public observance was created. The author argues that this was possible because the interpretation of them as symbols was part of a creative process in which new meanings for traditional forms of memorial were established and circulated. The memorials not only symbolized emotional responses to the war, but also ambitions for the post-war era. Contemporaries adopted new ways of thinking about largely traditional forms of memorial to fit the uncertain social and political climate of the inter-war years. This book represents a significant contribution to the study of material culture and memory, as well as to the social and cultural history of modern warfare.
