Book excerpt: Dans le cadre d'un bilan orthophonique, il semble important d'évaluer, de prendre en compte les conceptions concernant la matière et son apprentissage chez les enfants et leurs parents. L'impact des conceptions lors de l'apprentissage des mathématiques semble non négligeable. Nous avons posé les hypothèses suivantes : " Les enfants ayant une dyscalculie et/ou des troubles du raisonnement logico-mathématique ont une conception incomplète des mathématiques et de leur apprentissage. " et " Il existe un lien entre les conceptions des enfants et celles de leurs parents. " A notre connaissance, il n'existe pas de test évaluant diverses conceptions au niveau des difficultés en mathématiques, nous avons donc créé des questionnaires destinés aux enfants ayant des difficultés en mathématiques et à leurs parents dans le but d'évaluer diverses conceptions au niveau des mathématiques et de leur apprentissage. Les questionnaires ont été proposés à 67 enfants ayant une dyscalculie et/ou des troubles du raisonnement logico-mathématique et à leurs parents. Les résultats obtenus permettent de valider notre première hypothèse : les enfants ayant une dyscalculie et/ou des troubles du raisonnement logico-mathématique ont une conception incomplète des mathématiques et de leur apprentissage. Notre deuxième hypothèse n'est que partiellement validée : il existe quelques liens entre les conceptions des enfants et celles de leurs parents mais il n'y a pas de lien systématique. Les outils créés ont un intérêt clinique. Il est important de prendre en compte les conceptions à propos des mathématiques dans le cadre d'un bilan et d'une prise en charge orthophoniques. Les questionnaires peuvent intervenir dans le cadre du dépistage. Les réponses obtenues sont utiles pour la rééducation avec l'enfant : elles permettent de mieux comprendre l'enfant, elles donnent des pistes de prise en charge... Les questionnaires peuvent aussi être un point de départ pour un accompagnement parental, pour investir la famille dans la prise en charge.

A range of findings have shown how students consistently answer them in ways that fail to take account of the reality of the situations described. This monograph reports on studies carried out to investigate this "suspension of sense-making" in answering word problems. In Part One, a wide range of examples documenting the strength of the phenomenon is reviewed. Initial surprise at the findings was replaced by a conviction that the explanation lies in the culture of the mathematics classroom, specifically the rules implicitly governing the nature and interpretation of the word problem genre. This theoretical shift is reflected in Part Two. A detailed analysis of the way in which word problems are currently taught in typical mathematical classrooms is followed by reviews of design experiments illustrating how, by immersing students in a fundamentally changed learning environment, they can acquire what the authors consider to be more appropriate conceptions about, and strategies for doing, word problems. Part Three turns to a wider discussion of theoretical issues, a further analysis of the features of the educational system considered responsible for outcomes detrimental to many students' understanding and conception of mathematics, and suggestions for rethinking the role of word problems within the curriculum.

We can mentally represent the visual form of objects. We can extract information from several of the senses as to the location of objects in relation to ourselves and to other objects nearby. For some of those objects we can reach out and manipulate them. We can also imagine ourselves manipulating objects in advance of doing so, or even when it would be impossible to do so physically. The problem posed to science is how these cognitive operations are accomplished, and proffered accounts lie in two essentially parallel research endeavours, working memory and imagery. Working memory is thought to pervade everyday cognition, to provide on-line processing and temporary storage, and to update, moment to moment, our representation of the current state of our environment and our interactions with that environment. There is now a strong case for the claims of working memory in the area of phonological and articulatory functions, all of which appear to contribute to everyday activities such as counting, arithmetic, vocabulary acquisition, and some aspects of reading and language comprehension. The claims for visual and spatial working memory functions are less convincing. Most notable has been the assumption that visual and spatial working memory are intimately involved in the generation, retention and manipulations of visual images. There has until recently been little hard evidence to justify that assumption, and the research on visual and spatial working memory has focused on a relatively restricted range of imagery tasks and phenomena. In a more or less independent development, the literature on visual imagery has now amassed a voluminous corpus of data and theory about a wide range of imagery phenomena. Despite this, few books on imagery refer to the concept of working memory in any detail, or specify the nature of the working memory system that might be involved in mental imagery. This essay follows a line of reconciliation and positive critiquing in exploring the possible overlap between mental imagery and working memory. Theoretical development in the book draws on data from both cognitive psychology and cognitive neuropsychology. The aim is to stimulate debate, to address directly a number of assumptions that hitherto have been implicit, and to assess the contribution of the concept of working memory to our understanding of these intriguing core aspects of human cognition.
