Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 26 (thesis year 1981) a total of 11 ,048 theses titles from 24 Canadian and 21 8 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 26 reports theses submitted in 1981, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Estimating the Risk from Flooding and Evaluating Worry

Download or read book Estimating the Risk from Flooding and Evaluating Worry written by Colin Howard Green and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benefit-cost analyses are required for proposed flood alleviation and sea defence schemes in the United Kingdom. However, generally flood impacts such as stress, worry and evacuation have been left as 'intangibles'. Economic theory predicates that the avoidance of such impacts is a real benefit of flood alleviation. But only those impacts for which there exist a value consensus as to the bases of their measurement can be included within the framework of economic efficiency benefit-cost analyses.

Book Flood Damage Assessment Using Cost Benefit Analysis

Download or read book Flood Damage Assessment Using Cost Benefit Analysis written by Nor Azliza Akbar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to provide guidelines to engineer, town planner, economic analyst, researcher and authority on how to evaluate the efficiency of flood control schemes using cost-benefit analysis. As flood control project is very expensive, it is crucial to decide on which projects should be implemented in order to gain the most economical solution. The decision making process is based on the projects that provide highest benefit-cost ratio and maximum net benefit. By using this book, one will understand the basics of flood: hydrology, mitigation and implication. The method to assess the damages and the cost-benefit analysis technique are also described in details. Finally, a case study is shown as an example, in order to ensure that the readers will fully understand the necessary steps to calculate the cost-benefit parameters. Case study presented in this book is limited to the locality of the author. However, the readers can always perform another analysis, based on their local condition. By using combination of basic knowledge and case study in this book, the readers can develop their own tools to determine the cost-benefit parameters.

Book Ecosystem Service Values in Benefit cost Analysis of Flood Mitigation Projects

Download or read book Ecosystem Service Values in Benefit cost Analysis of Flood Mitigation Projects written by Patrick Green and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, I have presented ways to expand the stream of benefits and costs towards improving intergenerational equity of projects that impact floodplain ecosystems. I propose the use of ecosystem service values for project analysis. Additionally, I submit two methods of increasing intergenerational equity. I suggest the use of relative pricing and quasi-hyperbolic discount rates. Adjustments to standard benefit cost practices are necessary in ecologically complex transactions in which decisions can irreversibly damage irreplaceable and unique environmental resources. Failing to incorporate these factors into the benefit cost analysis leads to transaction costs. Ultimately, future generations inherit the cost of decisions that neglect ecologically complex systems. Addressing transaction costs requires the planner to mind ecological scenarios and economic values for ecosystem services. Relative pricing and quasi-hyperbolic discounting are tools that can assist the planner in this effort. It is possible that these tools will become more relevant to the planning profession if ecological and intergenerational considerations continue to pervade the analysis of projects.

Book Socioeconomic Effects of the National Flood Insurance Program

Download or read book Socioeconomic Effects of the National Flood Insurance Program written by James P. Howard, II and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief presents a benefit-cost analysis of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) as well as an evaluation of its cumulative socioeconomic effects. Created by Congress in 1968, the NFIP provides flood insurance protection to property owners, in return for local government commitment to sound floodplain management. Since 1994, the NFIP has included a Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) program to provide local communities with support for flood mitigation. This book offers quantitative evidence of the net social benefit of the NFIP for the years 1996-2010, including an independent assessment of the consumer benefit. Second, it provides distributionally weighted analysis to show the socioeconomic effects of payments and claims. Finally, this Brief includes an analysis of the change in government revenue attributable to the NFIP and FMA programs. The models used in each component of the analysis are usable by others for extending and revising the analysis. Providing a comprehensive analysis of this increasingly important federal policy, this Brief will be of use to students of environmental economics and public policy as well as those interested in risk management in the era of climate change.

Book Using Risk Analysis for Flood Protection Assessment

Download or read book Using Risk Analysis for Flood Protection Assessment written by Martina Zeleňáková and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the benefits of using risk analysis techniques in the evaluation of flood protection structures, and examines the results of the environmental impact assessment for selected planned flood protection projects. The objective of the book is to propose a methodology for environmental impact assessment in water management. In more detail, flood mitigation measures are investigated with the aim of selecting the best option for the approval process. This methodology is intended to streamline the process of environmental impact assessment for structures in the field of the water management. The book’s environmental impact assessment system for water management structures analyzes the respective risks for different options. The results are intended to support the selection of future projects that pose minimum risks to the environment. Comparison of alternatives and designation of the optimal variant are implemented on the basis of selected criteria that objectively describe the characteristics of the planned alternatives and their respective impacts on the environment. The proposed Guideline for environmental impact assessment of flood protection objects employs multi-parametric risk analysis, a method intended to not only enhance the transparency and sensitivity of the evaluation process, but also successfully addresses the requirements of environmental impact assessment systems in the European Union. These modifications are intended to improve the outcomes of the environmental impact assessment, but may also be applied to other infrastructure projects. The case study proves that the primary aim – to improve transparency and minimize subjectivity in the environmental impact assessment process specific to flood protection structure projects – is met for the planned project in Kružlov, Slovakia.

Download or read book Flood Issues in Contemporary Water Management written by J. Marsalek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997 disastrous flooding running through the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany took the lives of a great number of people and caused economic damage estimated in tens of billions of dollars. Flooding of the Yangtze river in 1998 killed more than 3000 people, dislocated 230 million souls, and caused direct damage of more than $ 45 billion. Both the general public and the experts are asking what we can learn from these recent events to reduce loss of life and flood damage. The 1997 floods were dealt with by experts from the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany, who presented timely reports on combatting floods, both success stories and shortcomings. This experience is further extended by reports from experts drawn from 13 other countries, developing a broad overview of flood risk management, covering the ecosystem approach to flood management, including socioeconomic issues, flood impacts on water quality, human health, and natural ecosystems.
