Book excerpt: This little photo album is the first of a series of booklets covering trains and trams in Europe and is self published via Createspace. Most publishers aren't interested in work with European subjects so the author has employed the easy to use system provided by Amazon. He was accompanied on all trips, often by one of his brothers and sometimes by like minded work colleagues. Some of the photos were even taken during family holidays! The author made five trips to the German Democratic Republic ; in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1983. It was an interesting place to visit and could be very cheap if west marks were exchanged for east marks on the black market. Hotels had to be booked in advance via Berolina Travel and persistence could result in being allowed to stay in hotels in the smaller towns such as the excellent Wilderman at Annaberg -Bucholz, where free enterprise was evident long before unification. These trips included visits to all nine of the remaining narrow gauge lines and this booklet includes photographs from five of those lines, taken in May 1981 and May 1983. All the lines in this booklet are still open today in some form. The photographs in this booklet were taken with a Bronica ETR-C, 6 x 4.5 cm 15 on 120 roll film camera using exclusively Kodak Ektachrome 64 asa colour slide film. Part Two will cover all nine of the lines with pictures taken by the author's faithful Pentax KX 35 mm camera using Kodak colour slide film.

Book excerpt: This little photo album is the second of a series of booklets covering trains and trams in Europe and is self published via Createspace. I was accompanied on all trips, often by one of my brothers and sometimes by like minded colleagues from work. I made five trips to the German Democratic Republic ; in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1983. It was an interesting place to visit and could be very cheap if west marks were exchanged for east marks on the black market. These trips included visits to all nine of the remaining narrow gauge lines. The first booklet in this series 'East German Narrow Gauge Lines-Part One' includes photographs from five of those lines, taken in May 1981 and May 1983. This booklet, Part Two, covers all nine of the lines with pictures taken by my faithful Pentax KX 35 mm camera using Kodak colour slide film which has stood the test of time very well. I only visited some lines once but others on a number of occasions and the Harz System every time we went to the DDR. This resulted in a large number of images and so another booklet, Part Three, will be produced concentrating on the Harz lines. I briefly revisited the two Ostsee lines in 1999 and a couple of shots are included.

  • Author : Owen Hatherley
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2018-06-07
  • ISBN : 0141985968
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Trans Europe Express written by Owen Hatherley and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2018-06-07 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A scathing, lively and timely look at the "European city", from one of our most provocative voices on culture and architecture today' Owen Jones A searching, timely account of the condition of contemporary Europe, told through the landscapes of its cities Over the past twenty years European cities have become the envy of the world: a Kraftwerk Utopia of historic centres, supermodernist concert halls, imaginative public spaces and futuristic egalitarian housing estates which, interconnected by high-speed trains traversing open borders, have a combination of order and pleasure which is exceptionally unusual elsewhere. In Trans-Europe Express, Owen Hatherley sets out to explore the European city across the entire continent, to see what exactly makes it so different to the Anglo-Saxon norm - the unplanned, car-centred, developer-oriented spaces common to the US, Ireland, UK and Australia. Attempting to define the European city, Hatherley finds a continent divided both within the EU and outside it. 'The latest heir to Ruskin.' - Boyd Tonkin, Independent 'Hatherley is the most informed, opinionated and acerbic guide you could wish for.' - Hugh Pearman, Sunday Times 'Can one talk yet of vintage Hatherley? Yes, one can. Here are all the properties that have made him one of the most distinctive writers in England - not just 'architectural writers', but writers full stop: acuity, contrariness, observational rigour, frankness and beautifully wrought prose.' - Jonathan Meades

Book The Mountains of Romania

Download or read book The Mountains of Romania written by Janneke Klop and published by Cicerone Press. This book was released on 2020-02-15 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide describes 27 short treks of 2-6 days and 10 day walks in the mountains of Romania. Although there is a slight focus on Transylvania, most of the main massifs are included, with chapters covering the Mountains of Maramures, the Eastern Carpathians, the mountains around Brasov, the Fagara?, the region between the Olt and the Jiu, the Retezat, the mountains of Banat and the Apuseni. Also included is an ascent of Moldoveanu, Romania's highest peak at 2544m. There is a wealth of advice to help you plan your trip and organise the logistics of your walk or trek. Some routes avail of the network of mountain huts; others offer opportunities to camp in attractive wild locations. Overviews and a route summary table make it easy to choose an appropriate excursion. Each route includes clear description and mapping, as well as notes on accommodation and access (some can be accessed by public transport, although others require either pre-arranged pick-up or hitchhiking). There are fascinating insights into Romania's colourful culture and history and appendices containing hut listings, useful contacts and a helpful glossary. The graded routes are as varied as Romania's diverse landscapes. They take in rolling hills, craggy karst peaks, glacial lakes and Europe's last virgin forests, with other highlights including Transylvanian castles, wooden churches, the Piatra Craiului ridge and the spectacular Sapte Scari (Seven Ladders) and Turda Gorges. Historic towns such as the medieval towns of Brasov and Sibiu and the spa resort of Vatra Dornei offer easy access to the mountains; other routes visit remote villages that have changed little over the centuries, where self-sufficiency is still very much the way of life. All in all, the guide is a perfect companion to discovering the unspoilt beauty of Romania's enchanting mountain regions.

Book The Geography of Transport Systems

Download or read book The Geography of Transport Systems written by Jean-Paul Rodrigue and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobility is fundamental to economic and social activities such as commuting, manufacturing, or supplying energy. Each movement has an origin, a potential set of intermediate locations, a destination, and a nature which is linked with geographical attributes. Transport systems composed of infrastructures, modes and terminals are so embedded in the socio-economic life of individuals, institutions and corporations that they are often invisible to the consumer. This is paradoxical as the perceived invisibility of transportation is derived from its efficiency. Understanding how mobility is linked with geography is main the purpose of this book. The third edition of The Geography of Transport Systems has been revised and updated to provide an overview of the spatial aspects of transportation. This text provides greater discussion of security, energy, green logistics, as well as new and updated case studies, a revised content structure, and new figures. Each chapter covers a specific conceptual dimension including networks, modes, terminals, freight transportation, urban transportation and environmental impacts. A final chapter contains core methodologies linked with transport geography such as accessibility, spatial interactions, graph theory and Geographic Information Systems for transportation (GIS-T). This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field, with a broad overview of its concepts, methods, and areas of application. The accompanying website for this text contains a useful additional material, including digital maps, PowerPoint slides, databases, and links to further reading and websites. The website can be accessed at: http://people.hofstra.edu/geotrans This text is an essential resource for undergraduates studying transport geography, as well as those interest in economic and urban geography, transport planning and engineering.

Book Tramway Renaissance in Western Europe

Download or read book Tramway Renaissance in Western Europe written by Dejan Petkov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dejan Petkov explores the tramway renaissance in Western Europe from a socio-technical standpoint and focuses on the development in Germany, France, and England. A multiple case analysis reveals the drivers, impact forces, actors and interest constellations behind the tramway renaissance in these countries and demonstrates the large variations in local systems and their style. A key finding is that there can be quite different paths to the success of tramway systems, but this success usually comes at a cost and can have a comprehensive character only if the systems are considered an integral part of the overarching strategies and concepts for urban and regional development.
