Spain’s European Stability Mechanism (ESM)-supported program of financial sector reform aimed to assist economic recovery by promoting financial stability. The program was adopted in mid-2012. The Spanish authorities’ implementation of the program has been steadfast. All of the program’s specific measures are now complete. Major structural reform efforts in a variety of areas (including labor and fiscal policies) will need to continue to achieve sufficiently rapid growth to bring unemployment down to reasonable levels over the medium term.

Book The Origins of Modern Banking in Spain

Download or read book The Origins of Modern Banking in Spain written by Carles Sudrià and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the formation of the Spanish banking system. It provides a general overview of European financial systems in operation during the mid-nineteenth century, followed by a detailed analysis of the economic and institutional changes that gave rise to a new form of banking in Spain. The chapters analyse changes on banking regulation; study the social origin of banks’ promoters; investigate the economic results of banks; and evaluate the interaction between banks and the economy as a whole. Finally, the causes, extent and consequences of monetary plurality in Spain and its European context are discussed. As such, this book covers the gap that exists in the Spanish banking historiography. Until now only the Bank of Spain and its predecessors had been adequately examined. As the Bank of Spain acted mostly as the state’s financial agent, we know very little about private-sector financing. This text provides data and analysis for a more comprehensive view of early Spanish financial development in a comparative European framework. The Origins of Modern Banking in Spain should be considered essential reading for financial history students and scholars, as well as anybody interested in longview approaches to modern financial development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper analyzes the challenges for the Spanish pension system. Spain’s population, like those in many other advanced economies, is projected to age over the coming decades. Although projections are uncertain, the simple fact is that Spain’s aging and shrinking population has put and will continue to put relentless pressure on contributory pension finances. The reforms adopted in 2011 and 2013 if fully implemented will ensure the financial viability of the contributory pension system. A package of reforms could include parametric changes such as automatically linking the retirement age to changes in life expectancy and adjusting accrual rates and the calculation of pensionable earnings.

Book Macroeconomic Imbalances

Download or read book Macroeconomic Imbalances written by European Commission. Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 14 February 2012, the European Commission presented its first Alert Mechanism Report (AMR) in accordance with the Regulation (EU) No. 1176/2011 on the prevention and correction of macroeconomic imbalances. The AMR serves as an initial screening device to identify Member States that warrant further in depth analysis into whether imbalances exist or risk emerging. According to Article 5 of Regulation No. 1176/2011, these country-specific ?in-depth reviews? should examine the nature, origin and severity of macroeconomic developments in the Member State concerned, which constitute, or could lead to, imbalances. On the basis of this analysis, the Commission concludes whether it considers that an imbalance exists or not, and if so whether it is excessive or not, and what type of follow-up it will recommend to the Council to address to the Member State. This in-depth review concludes that Spain is experiencing very serious macroeconomic imbalances, which are not excessive but need to be urgently addressed. In particular, macroeconomic developments, notably related to the significant level of private sector debt, the large negative external position and the financial sector, which were influenced by housing market developments, require close monitoring and urgent economic policy attention in order to avert any adverse effects on the functioning of the economy and of economic and monetary union.
