Book excerpt: L'objectif de cette thèse est axé sur l'identification des phases actives responsables de l'ouverture de cycle naphténique (OC) et sur la compréhension des mécanismes associés à ces phases, dans les conditions de l'isomérisation de la coupe C8 aromatique (AC8). Le procédé d'isomérisation vise à maximiser la production de para-xylène à partir d'un mélange d'éthylbenzène et des trois xylènes (para-, méta- et ortho-). Les pertes par OC constituent une perte nette en para-xylène qu'il est donc essentiel de minimiser. Le catalyseur d'isomérisation est bifonctionnel, alliant une phase hydro/deshydrogénante à base de platine, une phase acide constituée de zéolithe EU-1 et un support alumine en présence de chlore. Dans ce travail, l'approche utilisée a consisté à étudier séparément, sur charge modèle, chacune des phases actives du catalyseur d'isomérisation, à savoir: platine, l'alumine chlorée et la zéolithe EU-1. Ces phases ont été ensuite associées pour étudier l'impact de la présence de deux puis trois phases actives, en utilisant des catalyseurs modèles. Le réactif choisi a été l'éthylcyclohexane, produit direct de l'hydrogénation de l'éthylbenzène et par conséquence le premier naphtène formé lors de l'isomérisation de l'éthylbenzène. Les résultats catalytiques sur les différents catalyseurs modèles montrent que l'ouverture de cycle peut être purement métallique et dans une moindre mesure purement acide. Pour le catalyseur bifonctionnel contenant Pt-Alumine-Cl-EU-1, le mécanisme bifonctionnel gouverne l'OC. Ce travail a permis de mettre en exergue l'importance de l'équilibre sites hydrogénants (nPt) / sites acides (nA) dans le schéma réactionnel complexe autour de l'isomérisation de l'éthylbenzène et des xylènes. La zéolithe est majoritairement responsable des réactions non désirées, d'ouverture de cycle et de craquage consécutif, par catalyse bifonctionnelle, pour la formulation à forte teneur en zéolithe. Toutefois, ce travail montre l'intervention clé de la fonction hydrogénante dans le mécanisme réactionnel, lorsque le nombre de sites hydrogénants devient important par rapport au nombre de sites acides. Des voies ont pu être dégagées pour améliorer la sélectivité du catalyseur Pt-Alumine-Cl-EU-1. En particulier, la passivation partielle de la surface de la zéolithe constitue une voie intéressante pour réduire les pertes par craquage du catalyseur d'isomérisation des AC8.

Book excerpt: Most catalysts used in the chemical and petrochemical indus tries are strongly affected by one or another form of deactivation, leading to poor performances and reduced life. The increasing num ber of scientific communications devoted to the subject in recent years, and culminating with an International Symposium held in Antwerp in October 1980, is a measure of the interest it arouses in both the industrial and academic communities. A stage has been reached whereby it was thought that a NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Catalyst Deactivation" might be fruit ful in establishing the state of the art and in stimulating a more systematic research on the phenomenon. Such a meeting was held ~n Lagos, Portugal, from 18 to 29 May 1981. The purpose of the Institute was to present and discuss in a didatic and systematic way the various processes that lead to cata lyst deactivation, namely coking, poisoning and solid state trans formations, and at the same time to promote the exchange of ideas and experiences among the participants, drawn from industry and uni versity. The lectures presented at the Institute are collected in this volume with the exception of Dr. L.L.Hegedus "Catalyst Poisoning", which has been previously published (Catalysis Reviews, Science md Engineering, 23, 377-476, 1981).
