Book Economics of the Labour Market

Download or read book Economics of the Labour Market written by P. N. (Raja) Junankar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global crisis has led to dramatic increases in unemployment rates over most of the countries of the OECD. This book provides alternative explanations of this phenomenon. Junankar begins with surveys of the labour market: labour demand, labour supply, and labour force participation. He argues that the growth of unemployment and long-term unemployment is mainly due to a lack of aggregated demand and not due to high unemployment benefits. Economics of the Labour Market shows that unemployment and long-term unemployment impose serious and significant costs on individuals, families, and society in general. Raja Junankar focuses on vital social issues arising from the malfunctioning of economies and this collection of essays tackles the real cost of unemployment.

Book Demographic and Socioeconomic Outcomes Across the Indigenous Australian Lifecourse

Download or read book Demographic and Socioeconomic Outcomes Across the Indigenous Australian Lifecourse written by Nicholas Biddle and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across almost all standard indicators, the Indigenous population of Australia has worse outcomes than the non-Indigenous population. Despite the abundance of statistics and a plethora of government reports on Indigenous outcomes, there is very little information on how Indigenous disadvantage accumulates or is mitigated through time at the individual level. The research that is available highlights two key findings. Firstly, that Indigenous disadvantage starts from a very early age and widens over time. Secondly, that the timing of key life events including education attendance, marriage, childbirth and retirement occur on average at different ages for the Indigenous compared to the non-Indigenous population. To target policy interventions that will contribute to meeting the Council of Australian Governments¿ (COAG) Closing the Gap targets, it is important to understand and acknowledge the differences between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous lifecourse in Australia, as well as the factors that lead to variation within the Indigenous population.

Book The Price of Prosperity

Download or read book The Price of Prosperity written by Richard Taylor and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While our leaders celebrate Australia’s ‘economic miracle’, unemployment, particularly long-term unemployment, has become a permanent feature of Australia’s economic landscape. Its unacceptably high level has proved remarkably resistant in the face of sustained economic growth and increased prosperity. The adverse economic and social consequences of high unemployment are likely to leave long-term scars on those affected, as well as on local communities and the entire fabric of Australian society. Yet these effects rarely feature on the policy agenda, and the costs of unemployment remain largely invisible.

Book Measuring Economic Returns to Post school Education in Australia

Download or read book Measuring Economic Returns to Post school Education in Australia written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the rich data provided by the 1981-2006 six waves of the full Australian Census, this paper estimates the rates of return to post-school education in Australia, with a focus on bachelor degrees. Both the internal rate of return method and Mincer's human capital earnings function method are applied. The expected private rates of return from investment in bachelor degrees increased over time for males, from 13.1 percent in 1981 to 19.6 percent in 2001, and then dropped to 15.3 percent in 2006; the range was 18.0 percent to 17.3 percent for females over the same period. Drawing on the recent work of Heckman, Lochner and Todd (2005), this study also compares the two methods. The key difference is that the internal rate of return method can account for the effect on earnings of increased working experience associated with higher educational attainment, while Mincer's method does not as it assumes parallel earnings experience profiles across different educational levels. Book Investing in Indigenous Natural Resource Management

Download or read book Investing in Indigenous Natural Resource Management written by M. K. Luckert and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the case for investing in Indigenous natural resource management (NRM) in tropical Australia. Indigenous people provide a number of public goods in relation to environmental management for which they are not remunerated. Their presence on country should be viewed as a national asset. The health of Australia?s Indigenous people remains unacceptably. Individual and collective engagement with ancestrally significant land and sea improves health outcomes, while also supporting individual autonomy and social cohesion through cultural practices. This book brings together a broad suite of authors with an understanding of Indigenous NRM and the economics thereof. Indigenous NRM emerges as a ?keystone policy area? that could allow integration of many policy fields commonly considered in isolation. The editors of this book all have wide experience in the fields covered by this book. Professor Marty Luckert from the University of Alberta has been offering insights into the economics of environmental management around the world for decades, Professor Bruce Campbell from Charles Darwin University (CDU) has an international reputation for his work on livelihoods among the rural poor, Julian Gorman (CDU) has played a key role in fostering wildlife-based industries among Indigenous people in the monsoonal tropics of the Northern Territory and Professor Stephen Garnett (CDU) has broad experience in management of tropical environments, particularly northern Australia.
