Book Estimating Live Fish Catches from Archaeological Bone Fragments of Snapper Pagrus Auratus

Download or read book Estimating Live Fish Catches from Archaeological Bone Fragments of Snapper Pagrus Auratus written by Bryan Foss Leach and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five paired cranial bones and the otoliths of a modern sample of 110 New Zealand snapper (Pagrus auratus) were weighed and measured and regression analysis performed against live fork length and ungutted weight. A number of regression models and alternative steps in arriving at estimates were examined. Detailed analysis of residuals was used to distinguish between strategies. Fork length could be estimated with a standard error of less than 20mm, and weight to less than 140 g, For the latter, a two step procedure is suggested, from bone dimension to fork length and from this to live weight, using a sample of 833 fish. Coefficients are provided for 64 equations linking bone size to live characteristics. To reconstruct a size-frequency histogram of a prehistoric fish catch, it is acceptable to measure all bones from a particular species, even though the number of measurements may greatly exceed the MNI (Minimum Number of Individuals) for that species.--Publisher's description.

Book The Early Prehistory of Fiji

Download or read book The Early Prehistory of Fiji written by Geoffrey Richard Clark and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I enjoyed reading this volume. It is rare to see such a comprehensive report on hard data published these days, especially one so insightfully contextualised by the editors' introductory and concluding chapters. These scholars and the others involved in the work really know their stuff, and it shows. The editors connect the preoccupations of Pacific archaeologists with those of their colleagues working in other island regions and on "big questions" of colonisation, migration, interaction and patterns and processes of cultural change in hitherto-uninhabited environments. These sorts of outward-looking, big-picture contextual studies are invaluable, but all too often are missing from locally- and regionally-oriented writing, very much to its detriment. In sum, the work strongly advances our understanding of the early prehistory of Fiji through its well-integrated combination of original research and the reinterpretation of existing knowledge in the context of wider theoretical and historical concerns. In doing so The Early Prehistory of Fiji makes a truly substantial contribution to Pacific and archaeological scholarship. Professor Ian Lilley, The University of Queensland

Book Fishing in Pre European New Zealand

Download or read book Fishing in Pre European New Zealand written by Foss Leach and published by New Zealand Journal of Archaeology. This book was released on 2006 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative volume draws together a broad range of information about pre-European Maori fishing in a well illustrated and very readable form. The author uses identifications and measurements of fish remains from 126 archaeological sites covering the full time span of prehistoric New Zealand to describe the range of fish caught by pre-European Maori, explore variations between regions and through time, and examine the impact of Maori on the fishery. The archaeological information is placed in a series of wider contexts -the Pacific background to Maori fishing, the nature of the New Zealand fishery, climatic fluctuations during the last millennium, and the nutritional requirements of human diet and the role of marine food in it. The discussion of the technology and material culture of fishing breaks new ground in its treatment of cordage and knots, netting and fish hooks, canoe design, fish preservation and cooking methods. Research on fish behaviour towards hooks provides much needed insight into the reason why the rotating hook, so common amongst early Maori and other Pacific island peoples, was so successful. The author shows that pre-European Maori had a different approach to conservation of the marine environment than is currently employed in modern fisheries management and that claims of pre-European over-exploitation of snapper and other species are ill-founded. An especially important finding is that the average size of fish increased over time following the strategy of taking large numbers of what would now be considered under-sized fish. New Zealand had super-abundant fish stocks right up to the time of first European settlement, and all necessary marine food was obtained in shallow waters less than 100 m from the shore. Pre-European Maori fishermen in New Zealand are shown to have been extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the New Zealand fishery.

Book Fish Identification Tools for Biodiversity and Fisheries Assessments

Download or read book Fish Identification Tools for Biodiversity and Fisheries Assessments written by Johanne Fischer and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2013 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review provides an appraisal of existing, state-of-the-art fish identification (ID) tools (including some in the initial stages of their development) and shows their potential for providing the right solution in different real-life situations. The ID tools reviewed are: Use of scientific experts (taxonomists) and folk local experts, taxonomic reference collections, image recognition systems, field guides based on dichotomous keys; interactive electronic keys (e.g. IPOFIS), morphometrics (e.g. IPez), scale and otolith morphology, genetic methods (Single nucleotide polymorphisms [SNPs] and Barcode [BOL]) and Hydroacoustics. The review is based on the results and recommendations of the workshop "Fish Identification Tools for Fishery Biodiversity and Fisheries Assessments," convened by FAO FishFinder and the University of Vigo and held in Vigo, Spain, from 11 to 13 October 2011. It is expected that it will help fisheries managers, environmental administrators and other end users to select the best available species identification tools for their purposes.--

Book Rebuilding of Marine Fisheries Global review

Download or read book Rebuilding of Marine Fisheries Global review written by Serge Garcia and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rebuilding depleted stocks is a central part of the fisheries governance agenda. By analysing the available literature, Part 1 of "Rebuilding of marine fisheries" provides a global review of the emergence of the rebuilding paradigm, its key concepts, the trends in fishery resources, and the empirical evidence available on stocks depletion, collapse and rebuilding. It addresses the bio-ecological, economic, and human dimensions of rebuilding or restoration of stocks, multispecies assemblages and habitats/ecosystems and touches on the need for rebuilding at the whole sector level when depletion has become widespread and chronic. The human imensions of stocks and fisheries are given particular attention, looking at conflicting objectives, the bio-economy of rebuilding, its costs and benefits, and the distributional effects of the related reform among actors with their potential social consequences in the short and long terms. Governance is addressed in detail: legal and policy frameworks; rationale and objectives of a rebuilding regime; alternative rebuilding strategies; reference values and protocols; regulatory time-frames; risk management and harvest control rules; impacts of climatic oscillations; management tool-box; implementation guidance and performance evaluation. The document ends with a review of the determinants of success of a rebuilding programme."--Publisher's description for part 1.
