No. He forgets things, comes back to them later, revives a subject you thought dead and meaningless only to shed new light on it and make it important. Perhaps the greatest effect the book has is the after-taste. While it may seem slow, even boring, during the initial reading, it is hard to stop thinking about. Ford's novel broke new ground when it was written, something it was almost impossible to do in those jaded days. Ford created an unreliable narrator and also wrote about the complex inner workings of relationships, an area of darkness that will always be immune from full enlightenment. His characters also deceive themselves as well as significant others, and yet are always in pursuit of the perfect appearance. The subtlety with which Ford has woven this tapestry makes you think twice and then three times about who his people are and what they want. Unbridled lust also rides through the book, but is forever reigned in by double standards and self-torturing conscience. Although the book requires a patient reader so that it can bloom, its payoff stays with you, and its sharp observations and lack of sentiment make you realize what a brilliant piece of art it is. As such it is not subject to becoming dated or stale, a true test of its merit.

The Good Soldier is frequently included among the great literature of the 20th century, including the Modern Library 100 Best Novels, Ford was born in Wimbledon[5] to Catherine Madox Brown and Francis Hueffer, the eldest of three; his brother was Oliver Madox Hueffer. Ford's father, who became music critic for The Times, was German and his mother English. His paternal grandfather Johann Hermann Huffer was first to publish Westphalian poet and author Annette von Droste-Hulshoff. Ford used the name of Ford Madox Hueffer, but in 1919 he changed it to Ford Madox Ford (allegedly after World War I because "Hueffer" sounded too Germanic in honour of his grandfather, the Pre-Raphaelite painter Ford Madox Brown, whose biography he had written. In 1889, after the death of his father, Ford and Oliver went to live with their grandfather in London. Ford graduated from the University College School in London, but never attended university."

He was especially renowned as a literary personality, as a brilliant editor, and as an encourager of talented and emerging writers—"the Only Uncle of the Gifted Young," as H G. Wells called him. But he was also a major novelist in his own right, a fact which has been increasingly recognized in recent years. In this book, Mr. Meixner, a former assistant professor of English at the University of Kansas, presents an illuminating study of Ford's novels: descriptive, analytic, and evaluative. Lawrence to the literary world, and published the first sections of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake.He was editor of both The English Review and the transatlantic review (on which he appointed Ernest Hemingway as his assistant editor).
