Chapters 5, 6, and 7 contain the supplemental material for Chapters 2, 3, and 4, respectively.

Book Product Returns in Closed Loop Demand Chains

Download or read book Product Returns in Closed Loop Demand Chains written by Baris Yalabik and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flow of products usually occurs from manufacturers to consumers. In recent years the reverse flow---the number of items moving from consumers to manufacturers---has been gaining momentum. These returns can occur in a variety of ways, from customers taking advantage of a refund policy to warranty contracts to discards of items that have come to the ends of their useful lives. Competitive and legal forces and the need for more efficient manufacturing are now driving the need to better manage returns. A closed loop supply chain is a supply chain that is designed to consider the acquisition and return flows of products, reuse activities, and the distribution of the recovered products. A "demand chain" focuses on what the customer wants and needs, as opposed to seeing the customer as a closed box that generates some random demand. We define a "closed loop demand chain" as "a closed loop supply chain that is designed to consider customer characteristics and the influence of its decisions on the structure of the market it is serving". Our aim is to describe and analyze the operational and strategic decisions that need to be made in a closed loop demand chain. We use two examples: A product returns system and a remanufacturing system. For both cases, we solve for the optimal decisions of the firm and derive related insights. For the case of the remanufacturing system, we also examine the impact of remanufacturing on profits, customer surplus, and environmental friendliness, when compared to not remanufacturing.

Book Essays on Retail Operations

Download or read book Essays on Retail Operations written by Tugce Vural and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decision making spends valuable resources of a decision maker such as time, energy, and cognitive power. This dissertation focuses on the ripple effects of the customers' costly decision making process that a retailer should recognize in its operational decisions. In Chapter 2, a new choice model is presented to capture the customers' effort in their purchase decision. The optimal consideration set of customers, i.e., which options to collect information from, is characterized using a stylized model. We show that biases towards the options, stochastic payoffs, and the degree of difficulty in collecting and processing information are the primary determinants of the consideration set formation. By anticipating how customers make a choice, a retailer's optimal product assortment and price decision are provided. We further introduce the concept of fashion and show its influence both on the customers' and a retailer's decisions. Chapter 3 continues the discussion with the Home-Try-On retail model that intends to assist customers in finding what they value by sending a curated box of products to their homes. The retail model is analyzed by optimizing the assortment and price decisions to understand whether if it is optimal for a retailer to determine the box content for its customers. We show that it is not always profitable for a retailer to determine the box content. In some cases, the optimal decision maker of the box composition, i.e., customers or the retailer, can be the one who acquires and evaluates the information in a more costly manner. The chapter aims the attention on the retail operations that are not directly observable by customers, yet are affected by the costliness of purchase decisions. We specifically present the ways in which the inventory replenishment mechanism is shaped by helping customers in a Home-Try-On retail. Using insights from the interviews that we conducted with a Home-Try-On retailer, a unique version of a closed-loop supply chain is presented and simulated. The outputs of the simulation further point out the necessity of approaching the problems with a closed-loop supply chain lens due to the complexity of emerging operation models. These chapters suggest the importance of incorporating the value of customers' attention and new avenues that it opens in the Operations Management discipline.

Book Analyzing the Ways Companies Can Incentivize Consumers to Initiate the Returns Process Within Closed Loop Supply Chains

Download or read book Analyzing the Ways Companies Can Incentivize Consumers to Initiate the Returns Process Within Closed Loop Supply Chains written by Gabrielle Rego and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of Closed-Loop Supply Chains (CLSCs) worldwide has become increasingly popular, as sustainability is becoming a critical component of an organization's mission and strategy. While the company's responsibility for the product ends upon its delivery to the consumer in traditional supply chains, companies utilizing CLSCs are taking the additional responsibility for the product as waste. Therefore, companies must evaluate proper incentives to encourage the consumer to return the product to the company rather than conveniently disposing of it. This thesis, in full, provides background and current practices of Closed-Loop Supply Chains and analyzes the incentives needed for consumers to return used products to companies implementing a CLSC to be remanufactured, repaired, or recycled. This knowledge is contained through the analysis of literature reviews and existing CLSC practices across various industries to come up with a classification system of the criteria present in products that lend themselves capable of being returned. Based on the analysis of the existing CLSC applications and literature reviews, three standard criteria were current: consumer's need to replace the product, the feasibility of return process for the consumer, and monetary incentives in exchange for the consumers return. This thesis could provide a framework for companies looking to execute a reverse strategy within their CLSC and encourage consumers to return the product based on its criteria.

Book Are You Really Closing Your Supply Chain

Download or read book Are You Really Closing Your Supply Chain written by Rabindranath Bhattacharya and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-02 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at an important and underserved niche within supply chain management education and application: closed loop supply chain management where the product travels from cradle to cradle and not to grave. Products get a new life or become hybrid (combination of old and new) as it travels down the forward line to customers and back to the starting point through the reverse line from customers and again back to customers through forward line. All supply chain professionals need to understand this for their own survival in today's competitive world. This book is based on the research work carried out by the author for nearly four years in the Department of Management Studies of Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India and is meant to guide the practitioners (especially original equipment suppliers for especially auto parts) towards design of models, analysis of the same, drawing insights from them and ultimately providing superior service to customers. The author hopes to bring out the entire book in three parts and the first part of the series describes what is supply chain or forward supply chain to be precise, its evolution, motivation behind it, design and structure of the same and the way forward. Reverse supply chain and Closed loop supply chain integrating both forward and reverse chains would be taken up in the remaining two parts. This book is unlike any text book on Supply chain and is meant for general public as well as professionals and students who would like to have a general knowledge of the subject without going through complicated theories and problems. The dialogue between colleagues in between hope would help the readers get rid of monotony and a feel of reality.
