Book excerpt: The great C.S. Lewis said, “I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God. It changes me.” The act of praying demands an impossibility that we request and Lewis’s insights on Christianity, reflections, and teachings are cultivated from essays, articles, letters, and his classic words in How to Pray. Lewis provides a deeper understanding of the personal tradition of prayer, faith, and what it means to be a Christian. This compilation addresses commonly asked questions related to prayer such as: · Can prayer be proven to work? · Why should we pray if God already knows what we need? · How does prayer fit with the idea of God’s providence? · How can prayer become a regular practice? · How should we pray when we’re grieving? · Can we pray to avoid suffering? · How should we handle unanswered prayers? If you want to deepen your relationship with God or you’re searching for ways to strengthen your prayer life, How to Pray is the practical wisdom you need.

Book Prayer and Intelligence Selected Essays

Download or read book Prayer and Intelligence Selected Essays written by Jacques Maritain and published by Cluny Media, LLC. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authored by Jacques and Raissa Maritain, Prayer and Intelligence is a practical book about mental prayer and how to pray. It is also a book about the intellectual life. How does our intellectual search for God influence our life of prayer and how does the discipline of a life of prayer act as the necessary grounding for a profound and sustained search for the truth? In the pages of this book, philosophy and the spiritual life intertwine and strengthen each other. Accompanying Prayer and Intelligence are two essays, Liturgy and Contemplation, also written by Jacques and Raissa together, and Notes on the Lord's Prayer, written by Raissa. The former is a study of how the Church's liturgy prepares for our union with God by contemplation of love. The latter is a powerful meditation on the great gift of the prayer of Christ himself, "the prayer that is universally true and needed." All three of the works contained in this volume are written by friends, for friends, seeking to know and love God. If we wish to grow in our spiritual life, this book serves as a great guide."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Power of Prayer: Being a Selection of Walker Trust Essays, With a Study of the Essays as a Religious and Theological Document The Walker Trust of the University of St. Andrews in May 1916 issued a circular in the following terms: - "At this time of world-tragedy the significance of prayer in daily life is everywhere becoming more widely recognised, and it is felt that the time may have come for gathering together a record of the thoughts of those who have recognised its meaning and power, and are willing to share their experiences with others. With this end in view, and with the object of publishing what may seem helpful, the Walker Trustees invite essays on - "Prayer: The meaning, the reality and the power of Prayer, its place and value to the Individual, to the Church, and to the State, in the everyday affairs of life, in the healing of sickness and disease, in times of distress and national danger, and in relation to national ideals and to world-progress. "It is suggested that the length of an essay be from 4000 to 6000 words, but no word-limit is imposed. Contributors may write in any language. "A prize of £100 is offered for the most widely helpful essay - open to any one in any part of the world. The Trustees may, at their discretion, allot additional prizes." In view of the connection of the Walker Trust with St. Andrews, special prizes were offered to graduates and to under graduates of St. Andrews University. In response to the invitation 1667 essays were received. They came from every quarter of the globe; they were writ ten in nineteen languages, living and dead; they reflected widely different grades of intelligence, culture and religious experience, and they represented every standpoint of the positive religious thought of the higher civilisations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I would like to write a beautiful prayer," writes the young Flannery O'Connor in this deeply spiritual journal, recently discovered among her papers in Georgia. "There is a whole sensible world around me that I should be able to turn to Your praise." Written between 1946 and 1947 while O'Connor was a student far from home at the University of Iowa, A Prayer Journal is a rare portal into the interior life of the great writer. Not only does it map O'Connor's singular relationship with the divine, but it shows how entwined her literary desire was with her yearning for God. "I must write down that I am to be an artist. Not in the sense of aesthetic frippery but in the sense of aesthetic craftsmanship; otherwise I will feel my loneliness continually . . . I do not want to be lonely all my life but people only make us lonelier by reminding us of God. Dear God please help me to be an artist, please let it lead to You." O'Connor could not be more plain about her literary ambition: "Please help me dear God to be a good writer and to get something else accepted," she writes. Yet she struggles with any trace of self-regard: "Don't let me ever think, dear God, that I was anything but the instrument for Your story." As W. A. Sessions, who knew O'Connor, writes in his introduction, it was no coincidence that she began writing the stories that would become her first novel, Wise Blood, during the years when she wrote these singularly imaginative Christian meditations. Including a facsimile of the entire journal in O'Connor's own hand, A Prayer Journal is the record of a brilliant young woman's coming-of-age, a cry from the heart for love, grace, and art.

Book excerpt: Pete Greig is a worldwide authority and the face of a generation when it comes to prayer. One of the founders of the 24-7 prayer movement, he has seen, experienced, and chronicled amazing works of God in the world. While you might imagine him to be puffed up, Pete Greig is entirely the opposite. He is enchanting, down-to-earth, friendly, and most of all, very normal–and yet he tells preposterous tales about prayer (and they’re true). He is basically a regular dude who loves to talk with God. How to Pray is written to evoke a passion for prayer in everyone—the committed follower of Jesus as well as the skeptic and the scared. The enormous blessing of How to Pray is that it is accessible, full of surprising stories of answered prayer, and tremendously engaging. The basic idea is that prayer is a conversation between you and God. Pete Greig demystifies and reenchants prayer, helping you to find prayer achievable and enjoyable, and ultimately life-giving and life-changing. How to Pray is designed to be used together with The Prayer Course (a free video curriculum associated with the Alpha course), making it useful for personal and group or church-wide reading.
