Book Especially the Parchments

Download or read book Especially the Parchments written by Jim Throne and published by BookLocker.com. This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctor Oscar Sample, Professor of Early Christianity, a former NFL player, is confronted with this conundrum when a young priest arrives one evening at his office. At first, Sample scoffs at the first couple of pages, thinking that they were either purloined or fake. After closer examination, he realizes that the pages contain three languages - Greek, Medieval Latin and perhaps a version of Hebrew or Aramaic. Sample gets the priest to explain that he’d uncovered the cache at the Archbishopric in New Orleans. Sample has a photographer, a gridiron nemesis, to carefully photograph each page. He asks his graduate student to examine the copies. They appear truly ancient, perhaps first century CE. Sample recruits a well-known Jewish scholar, an expert in paper technologies and an expert in written antiquities to decide whether the documents are real. If so, what do the messages reveal?. The parchment and the inks are eighth century Celtic. The group concludes that they are probably practice pages done by monastery scribes. As the translations evolve the group discusses the source of these documents and their authorship and meaning. Are these the writings of religious members at the beginning of Christianity? Before the group can decide how to disseminate the information, one by one the members die under unusual circumstances.

Book excerpt: There may be no more powerful desire in the human heart than to be loved. And not just loved, but loved anyway. In spite of what we've done or left undone, in spite of the ways we have failed or floundered. We long for an unconditional, lavish love that we know intrinsically we don't deserve. If you are tired, sad, yet always longing, bestselling author Jared C. Wilson has incredible news for you: that kind of love actually exists, and it is actually something you can experience--whether or not you're in a romantic relationship. In his signature reflective, conversational, and often humorous style, Wilson unpacks 1 Corinthians 13 to show us what real love looks like. Through engaging stories and touching anecdotes, he paints a picture of an extravagant God who not only puts the desire for love into our very souls but fulfills those desires in striking, life-changing ways.

Book excerpt: In 1844 a German scholar traveled ten days by camel to a monastery guarded by the 1,100-year-old skeleton of a janitor, where the scholar discovered the world’s oldest complete copy of the New Testament. In 1947 the oldest complete manuscript of Hebrew Scripture disappeared in Syrian riots. Part of it was later recovered, and a full page and a fragment were also discovered in Brooklyn, New York. In 1536 William Tyndale was burned at the stake for the crime of publishing the New Testament in English. The Bible is a remarkable collection of books and letters, written by more than forty authors over a period of 1,500 years. Its words have been studied, disputed, and treasured. They have also brought comfort, conviction, and challenge. Today at least one book of the Bible is translated into more than 2,400 of the world’s 6,900 living languages. The Story of the Bible is a sweeping panorama of the Bible’s 3,500-year history, answering questions such as: How accurate are the manuscripts we have? Do all translations say the same thing? Was America really founded on the Bible? Why are the Dead Sea Scrolls so important? Endorsements: “A captivating and colorful account of the history of the Bible from parchment to print.” – Ravi Zacharias, from the foreword “The Story of the Bible tells beautifully and crisply how the Bible came together and how it has been read through the centuries. Book excerpt: The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.
