Book excerpt: Este libro es el resultado de una investigación constante realizada a lo largo de la profesión de la autora, como arquitecta que construye, como profesora universitaria y como investigadora. Pese a tener un desarrollo acotado históricamente en el siglo XX, concretamente desde principios de los años veinte hasta finales de los años setenta, este trabajo se origina a raíz de una serie de reflexiones que arrancan desde la actualidad. Estos interrogantes se enmarcan con el paisaje de fondo de los espacios de relación entre los usuarios, y la búsqueda de nuevas tipologías y soportes para el habitar colectivo, en respuesta a las necesidades de la ciudad contemporánea y las personas que las habitamos. Generado como si se tratara del proceso de desarrollo de un proyecto, trata de indagar en la Modernidad, en sus mentalidades, proyectos, realidades y utopías que son imprescindibles para plantear un cambio de estrategia en el proyecto de vivienda colectiva hoy. Por tanto, esta investigación–proyecto, no es una investigación histórica, sino una que desempolva precedentes que son casi recientes. Todo ello para colocar el punto de partida del proyecto desde el conocimiento de lo ya avanzado y lo ya propuesto. Quien realice una lectura sin perder la perspectiva del momento presente, comprenderá las circunstancias que originaron aquellas arquitecturas domésticas colectivas y tendrá las herramientas para reflexionar sobre cuáles serían las alternativas que podrían aportarse hoy de acuerdo con las demandas de la sociedad actual. El lector aprenderá indudablemente del potencial, logros, carencias y fracasos de la arquitectura moderna reciente, pudiendo así fijar el punto de partida hoy, para el desarrollo e investigación acerca del proyecto de la vivienda colectiva contemporánea.

Su función ambigua y polivalente introdujo un nuevo espacio habitable por fuera de los límites domésticos que amerita ser estudiado para definir sus partes compositivas, sus variaciones formales, sus cualidades espaciales y habitacionales, las actividades que desarrollan los habitantes, la articulación con las demás estancias de la vivienda, así como las consideraciones que motivaron su proyección. Esto llevó a plantear la siguiente pregunta de investigación sobre la vivienda colectiva del siglo XX: ?Qué atributos, dispositivos y estrategias proyectuales hacen de los corredores el espacio idóneo para tejer las relaciones humanas y conservar las actividades sociales en la vivienda en altura? La construcción de los capítulos de la tesis se ha basado en las jerarquías de asociaciones humanas: Ciudad, Barrio, Calle y Casa, propuestas por Alison y Peter Smithson como fundamento de las nuevas estructuras comunitarias y modos de vida. Desde esta perspectiva, los corredores como eje de las relaciones humanas se estudian dentro de un grupo de 14 proyectos de vivienda colectiva del siglo XX escogidos por ejemplificar diferentes soluciones en cada jerarquía desde la forma, la función y la habitabilidad.
