Book Episkop and Episcopacy and the Quest for Visible Unity

Download or read book Episkop and Episcopacy and the Quest for Visible Unity written by World Council of Churches. Commission on Faith and Order and published by World Council of Churches. This book was released on 1999 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agreement on the ministry is one of the most elusive facets of the search for the visible unity of the church. And among the differences which separate churches in this area, one of the hardest to resolve is how the ministry of oversight or episkope is exercised. Recognizing that new forms of exercising oversight were emerging and new questions about episkope arising, the Fifth World Conference on Faith and Order (Santiago de Compostela, 1993) urged renewed ecumenical study of this theme. The present volume is the fruit of the resulting process of exchange and discussion undertaken by the WCC's Faith and Order Commission, focusing in two consultations - in Strasbourg, France in April 1997, and in Cret-Berard, Switzerland, in September 1997.

Book excerpt: What does episcopal fraternity and communio look like? This central question is explored through the erudition and experience of Archbishop Anthony Fisher, Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Australia. Unity in Christ, based upon a series of addresses given to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) at their Special Assembly in 2022, delves into the themes associated with episcopal unity. By surveying the Christian tradition, beginning with the scriptures and then through various periods (Apostolic generation, patristic, scholastic, Vatican II, recent post Vatican II developments such as synodality) a coherent picture of episcopal togetherness is presented. What becomes clear is that unity among Christ's disciples and their successors is not simply an ideal but rather a constitutive element of their office. They are called to love as Christ loved, expressed above all through genuine friendship with one another. The consequences of this fraternity and communio have implications in areas such as spirituality, preaching and fraternal correction, among others. This second feature, the implications of episcopal fraternity and communio, are explored through Archbishop Fisher's twenty years of experience as a bishop of the Catholic Church. By providing concrete examples of lived episcopal fraternity and communio, Fisher offers a glimpse into both the challenges and fruits of living out Christ's call that "they might all be one" (Jn 17:21).

Download or read book Cruciform Ecumenism written by Elizabeth Smith Woodard and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truth claims of Christianity appear compromised by the division of Christ’s followers into different denominations. What keeps Christians separated, retreating to their corners labeled Catholic, Orthodox, and various types of Protestant? Elizabeth Smith Woodard accounts for Christian disunity in terms of ecclesiology, episcopacy, and apostolicity: in brief, Who are we? Who is in charge? And are we who we say we are? Woodard argues that the controversial issues dividing Christians today stem from these questions of authority and identity. What would it look like, Woodard asks, if Christians did not insist on making “others” more “like us,” but instead worked toward all of “us” becoming more and more like Christ? She answers that growing in such cruciformity should serve as the basis for unity. Using recent unity-achieving Anglican-Lutheran discussions as a case study, she examines the crucial intersection of ecclesiology, episcopacy, and apostolicity to argue that Christians’ growth in Christ’s mission necessarily entails growing in unity and cruciformity.
