Book excerpt: Im Wintersemester 1816/17 hat Hegel in Heidelberg über Enzyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften vorgetragen und bald darauf - im Juni 1817 - einen Grundriß seines Systems unter diesem Namen veröffentlicht. Hegels Schüler und Biograph Karl Rosenkranz schreibt hierüber: »Diese erste Ausgabe der Enzyklopädie enthält noch ganz den schöpferischen Hauch der ersten Produktion. Die späteren Ausgaben sind in der Ausführung des Einzelnen, namentlich aber in polemischen und apologetischen Anmerkungen, viel ausführlicher geworden; um aber Hegels System in seiner konzentrierten Totalität zu haben, wie es mit der ganzen Kraft des primitiven Erscheinens hervortrat, wird man immer auf diese erste Ausgabe zurückkommen und sie daher auch wieder abdrucken müssen.« Trotz dieses Hinweises ist diese erste Fassung der Enzyklopädie bislang nur durch einen von Hermann Glockner veranlassten reprographischen Nachdruck zugänglich geworden; im vorliegenden Band wird sie erstmals textkritisch ediert und durch einen Editorischen Bericht und Anmerkungen erschlossen. Von der Erstausgabe hat sich Hegel Handexemplare mit eingelegten Blättern binden lassen und diese Blätter überreich mit Notizen versehen. Der Band zur Philosophie des Geistes hat sich erhalten: Die Notizen werden hier kritisch ediert, und der edierte Text wird mit Faksimiles der Manuskriptseiten kontrastiert, so dass der Leser ein anschauliches Bild der oft sehr komplizierten Anordnung dieser Notizen zueinander gewinnen kann. Als weitere Beilagen enthält der Band fragmentarische Manuskripte Hegels zu seinen Vorlesungen über Logik und Metaphysik, über Naturphilosophie sowie über Anthropologie und Psychologie, an denen man seine fortschreitende Ausarbeitung dieser Disziplinen verfolgen kann, ferner Diktate Hegels zur Enzyklopädie aus dem Sommersemester 1818. Nunmehr liegen alle drei Auflagen der Enzyklopädie in kritischer Edition vor (GW 13, 19 und 20). Um die Benutzung zu erleichtern, enthält GW 13 eine Konkordanz, die die Paragraphen der ersten Ausgabe denen der zweiten zuordnet.

Book excerpt: Die Enzyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften im Grundrisse ist ein 1817 in Heidelberg erschienenes Werk. Es enthält seine als allumfassendes System gestaltete Philosophie und war zugleich als Vorlesungskompendium gedacht. Es ist eines der Hauptwerke des deutschen Idealismus, welches sich insbesondere mit Themen der Metaphysik und Ontologie wie dem "Göttlich-Absoluten" und der "Idee" beschäftigt, aber auch mit der Totalität der Wirklichkeit und des Wissbaren. Auch die hegelsche Dialektik wird hier dargestellt. 1827 erschien die zweite, fast doppelt so dicke Auflage, 1830 die dritte, noch einmal veränderte Auflage. Die heutigen Neudrucke (etwa in der verbreiteten Ausgabe bei Suhrkamp) basieren auf dieser dritten Auflage, vermehrt um die "Zusätze", die die "Freunde des Verewigten" aus Manuskripten und Schülermitschriften von Vorlesungen hinzufügten. Die Zusätze sind nach den heutigen philologischen Maßstäben problematisch. Großen Einfluss hatte diese Schrift auf die Lebensphilosophie und den Neukantianismus; auch setzten sich viele bekannte Denker – u.a. Bakunin (1814–1876), Charles S. Peirce (1839–1914), Benedetto Croce (1866–1952) und Giovanni Gentile (1875–1944) – intensiv mit ihr auseinander.

Book excerpt: This book investigates Hegel’s interpretation of the mystical philosophy of Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), considered in the context of the reception of Böhme in the 18th and 19th centuries, and of Hegel’s own understanding of mysticism as a philosophical approach. The three sections of this book present: the historical background of Hegel’s encounter with Böhme’s writings; the development of two different conceptions of mysticism in Hegel’s work; and finally Hegel’s approach to Böhme’s philosophy, discussing in detail the references to Böhme both in published writings and manuscripts. According to Hegel, Böhme is “the first German philosopher”. The reason for placing Böhme at the very beginning of German philosophy is that Hegel considers him to be a profound thinker, despite his rudimentary education. Hegel’s fascination with Böhme mainly concerns the mystic’s understanding of the symbiotic relation between God and his opposite, the Devil: he considers this to be the true speculative core of Böhme’s thought. By interpreting Böhme, Hegel intends to free the speculative content of his thought from the limitations of the inadequate, barbarous form in which the mystic expressed it, and also to liberate Böhme from the prejudices surrounding his writings, placing him firmly in the territory of philosophy and detaching him from the obscurity of esotericism. Combining historical reconstructions and philosophical argumentation, this book guides the reader through an important phase in German philosophy, and ultimately into an inquiry about the relationship between mysticism and philosophy itself.

In Hegel's Trinitarian Claim, Dale M. Schlitt provides a careful, detailed presentation of this claim in Hegel's major published works and in his lectures on the philosophy of religion, taking a critical look at how Hegel presents his claim that to think of God as subject and person one must think of God as Trinity. Although agreeing with Hegel's conclusion, Schlitt argues on the basis of an immanent critique of Hegel's thought that Hegel is not able to defend that claim in the way in which he proposes to do so. Schlitt argues instead that Hegel's trinitarian claim can be justified when Spirit is no longer seen as a movement of thought but as a movement of enriching experience. This close analysis provides an excellent point of entry into the wider study and critical consideration of Hegel's systematic philosophical project as a whole. Originally published in 1984 and available now in paperback for the first time, this edition features a new preface and postscript.
