Book The Forests of the Congo Basin

Download or read book The Forests of the Congo Basin written by Carlos de Wasseige and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2010 State of the Forest report (SOF) benefited from financial support from the European Union, the United States, Germany, France and UNESCO. It represents the collaborative effort of over 100 individuals from a diversity of institutions and the forestry administrations of the Central African countries. The SOF process began with the selection and definition of indicators relevant to monitoring the state of forests in Central Africa. The indicators are structured around three thematic areas: (i) forest cover; (ii) management of production forests; and (iii) conservation and biodiversity. They are presented in a hierarchical structure at the regional, national and management unit (i.e. logging concessions and protected areas) levels. The indicators were vetted by a representative panel of stakeholders of forest management in Central Africa. The indicators are used to guide an annual data collection process carried out between April and August by national groups of four to ten individuals working within the forestry administrations. The data reported on in the 2010 SOF were primarily collected in 2009 and 2010. Results were validated in national workshops attended by government officials as well as representatives of environmental NGOs, the private sector and development projects. The data provided an important basis for the authors of the 11 chapters of the 2010 SOF, which were under the coordination of a scientific committee of international renown. A final workshop was held 29-30 March, 2011 in Douala to review a draft report. Following amendments based on comments from a wide audience of experts the final layout was completed.

Book The Voyages of Jacques Cartier

Download or read book The Voyages of Jacques Cartier written by Ramsay Cook and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacques Cartier's voyages of 1534, 1535, and 1541constitute the first record of European impressions of the St Lawrence region of northeastern North American and its peoples. The Voyages are rich in details about almost every aspect of the region's environment and the people who inhabited it. As Ramsay Cook points out in his introduction, Cartier was more than an explorer; he was also Canada's first ethnographer. His accounts provide a wealth of information about the native people of the region and their relations with each other. Indirectly, he also reveals much about himself and about sixteenth-century European attitudes and beliefs. These memoirs recount not only the French experience with the Iroquois, but alo the Iroquois' discovery of the French. In addition to Cartier's Voyages, a slightly amended version of H.P. Biggar's 1924 text, the volume includes a series of letters relating to Cartier and the Sieur de Roberval, who was in command of cartier on the last voyage. Many of these letters appear for the first time in English. Ramsay Cook's introduction, 'Donnacona Discovers Europe,' rereads the documents in the light of recent scholarship as well as from contemporary perspectives in order to understand better the viewpoints of Cartier and the native people with whom he came into contact.

Book Abelian Properties of Anick Spaces

Download or read book Abelian Properties of Anick Spaces written by Brayton Gray and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anick spaces are closely connected with both EHP sequences and the study of torsion exponents. In addition they refine the secondary suspension and enter unstable periodicity. This work describes their -space properties as well as universal properties. Techniques include a new kind on Whitehead product defined for maps out of co-H spaces, calculations in an additive category that lies between the unstable category and the stable category, and a controlled version of the extension theorem of Gray and Theriault (Geom. Topol. 14 (2010), no. 1, 243–275).

Book m KdV Solitons on the Background of Quasi Periodic Finite Gap Solutions

Download or read book m KdV Solitons on the Background of Quasi Periodic Finite Gap Solutions written by Fritz Gesztesy and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the introductory section, we review the formulation of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and of the modified KdV (mKdV) equation as a compatibility condition for a Lax pair of linear operators. We then illustrate Miura's transformation, which maps solutions of the mKdV into solutions of the KdV. We then give a general overview of the concept of soliton solutions relative to general backgrounds, and of the single and double commutation methods. Finally, we present the main results of the article. To avoid the clutter of too many technical details, the paper is organized in four sections and five appendices.

Book Diagonalizing Quadratic Bosonic Operators by Non Autonomous Flow Equations

Download or read book Diagonalizing Quadratic Bosonic Operators by Non Autonomous Flow Equations written by Volker Bach and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors study a non-autonomous, non-linear evolution equation on the space of operators on a complex Hilbert space. They specify assumptions that ensure the global existence of its solutions and allow them to derive its asymptotics at temporal infinity. They demonstrate that these assumptions are optimal in a suitable sense and more general than those used before. The evolution equation derives from the Brocket-Wegner flow that was proposed to diagonalize matrices and operators by a strongly continuous unitary flow. In fact, the solution of the non-linear flow equation leads to a diagonalization of Hamiltonian operators in boson quantum field theory which are quadratic in the field.

Book Direct and Inverse Scattering at Fixed Energy for Massless Charged Dirac Fields by Kerr Newman de Sitter Black Holes

Download or read book Direct and Inverse Scattering at Fixed Energy for Massless Charged Dirac Fields by Kerr Newman de Sitter Black Holes written by Thierry Daudé and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, the authors study the direct and inverse scattering theory at fixed energy for massless charged Dirac fields evolving in the exterior region of a Kerr-Newman-de Sitter black hole. In the first part, they establish the existence and asymptotic completeness of time-dependent wave operators associated to our Dirac fields. This leads to the definition of the time-dependent scattering operator that encodes the far-field behavior (with respect to a stationary observer) in the asymptotic regions of the black hole: the event and cosmological horizons. The authors also use the miraculous property (quoting Chandrasekhar)—that the Dirac equation can be separated into radial and angular ordinary differential equations—to make the link between the time-dependent scattering operator and its stationary counterpart. This leads to a nice expression of the scattering matrix at fixed energy in terms of stationary solutions of the system of separated equations. In a second part, the authors use this expression of the scattering matrix to study the uniqueness property in the associated inverse scattering problem at fixed energy. Using essentially the particular form of the angular equation (that can be solved explicitly by Frobenius method) and the Complex Angular Momentum technique on the radial equation, the authors are finally able to determine uniquely the metric of the black hole from the knowledge of the scattering matrix at a fixed energy.
