Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreations of a Sportsman, Vol. 1 of 2 England, occasionally interspersing them with sketches and anecdotes of those lovers of field amusements who have rendered themselves worthy of such a notice. Although we do not pledge our selves to confine our remarks to the sports of the month, we shall, as far as lies in our power, treat of those that are principally indulged in during those respective divisions; and, to carry out that view, we commence with the diversions of January. The more northern nations anciently assigned portentous qualities to the winds of New Year's Eve, as may be gleaned from the following legend. Book English Sport Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Sport Classic Reprint written by Alfred Edward Thomas Watson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-07 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Sport With a view to subsequent appearance in book form I lately published in the Badminton Magazine, under the general title Masters of Their Arts, a series of papers intended to place on record the manner in which the chief English sports and pastimes were conducted and practised at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Masters of Their Arts seemed appropriate, for the reason that those from whom I sought contributions might be fittingly so described. I drew out a list of the authorities whom I considered best able to supply what I wanted, and was extremely fortunate in obtaining a favourable answer to my requests in every case. Perhaps it would be presumptuous on my part to say that I do not see how the list could well have been strengthened; that, however, is a matter I leave with no little confidence to the judgment of readers. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Sports of England This is the first step to history; for what is history but the account of what people said and did long ago, related by them to their children, and by them told again to others? Inquiries into the customs of our ancestors, which, from length of time, have become obscure, constitute a portion of the amusement and occupation of the antiquary. It was to the ardour with which he followed these researches, to his accurate' memory, and to the keen judgment which he exercised about them, joined to the delightful manner in which he imparted his knowledge to others, that Sir Walter Scott owed his great cele brity as the poet and historian of chivalry, the chronicler of ancient manners, and the devoted lover of brown heath and shaggy wood. You have all, perhaps, read some Of his works, and 1 am sure they must have charmed you. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys

Download or read book The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys written by Henry Chadwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys: A Guide and d104-Book of Games of the Play-Ground, the Parlor, and the Field, Adapted Especially for American Youth OW that the spirit of the age favors the plan of a judicious combination of physical recreation with mental culture, it is timely to prepare a text-book of sports and pastimes for boys, which will best tend to promote this system of paying due attention to physical as well as mental education. An old writer says, Let me make the songs of a people, and I care not who makes their laws. This rule is as applicable to the structure of the sports of a people as it is to the com position of their songs. The pastimes of boys of all nations partake largely of the peculiar character of the people whose youth engage in them. The boys of a war like nation find their chief recreation in sports in which feats of brutal courage, and of endurance of fatigue and pain, are marked characteristics. On the other hand, the youths of a peaceful people enjoy those pastimes best which most com pare in their character with the national life of their progenitors. Differences in climate necessarily have their relation to the character of national sports but it is more in the essential character of the people themselves that their national pastimes differ, and this is especially noticeable in the receative sports of boys. It is in this respect that the games of American boyhood are different, as a rule, from those of English youths. Of course, there is a certain degree of similarity in most of them, arising from their English origin but there is scarcely an imported game that is at all open to improvement, which has not of late years been essentially Americanized witness the evolution of our manly national game of base-ball from the old English schoolboy game of Rounders. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Sports and Pastimes 1868 Considered that it is too delicate, too pretty, too refined to be dealt with by men who profess that, in speaking Of British Sports, they have intended to speak of things rough and violent. Tennis is not now widely known, but that, and Rackets, - which we regard as perhaps the most perfect game that was ever invented, - are Games rather than Sports, and can hardly be brought within our limits. There remains that wide word Athletics. Racing, Jumping, Ball-throwing and Hammer-throw ing, and the like, have undoubtedly pushed them selves into such prominent notice in late years as to give them almost a claim to be reckoned among British Sports; but we have felt that they have fallen some what short of the necessary dignity, and have excluded them, - not altogether with a clear conscience.
