Book English in American Universities Classic Reprint

Download or read book English in American Universities Classic Reprint written by William Morton Payne and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English in American Universities The methods employed by our schools in the teaching of English literature have, for some years past, been in a transition stage, exhibiting a strong tendency towards more enlightened ways of dealing with this vastly important subject. The fermentation is of the healthful type, and a fairly clarified product may not unreasonably be expected to result. When Matthew Arnold declared the future of poetry to be immense, he expressed a truth whose full significance may be realized only upon considerable reflection, and the assumption of a broadly philosophical standpoint from which to view the coming conquests of culture. The same idea was expressed, with something of humorous exaggeration, by the author of The New Republic, who attributed to John Stuart Mill the opinion that "when all the greater evils of human life shall have been removed, the human race is to find its chief enjoyment in reading Wordsworth's poetry." To indicate the importance of a due appreciation of literature I hardly need, upon this occasion, to repeat the hackneyed quotations in praise of books, from Richard de Bury to Mr. Ruskin; it may surely be taken for granted that, allowing Arnold's demand on behalf of conduct for a good three-fourths of our life, a considerable share of the remaining fraction may be claimed for literature. Subordinate to these authors are those less famous with whom all but the most superficial students should be acquainted, and who would necessarily be excluded in a briefer consideration of our literature. III. Authors' belonging to the literature of knowl edge, rather than to the literature of power, writers whose services must always be remembered in any complete history of literature, these, together with their works, are mentioned in the introductory paragraphs of each chapter. IV. English authors have been chronologically divided into six groups for the purpose of giving the student a clearer idea of what writers were contemporaneous, and, at the same time, effectively to present the movement dur ing each epoch. It is believed that the classification is a natural one, and that while doing no violence to similar and well-settled plans, it more exactly discriminates the periods of actual change in the literary spirit. Download or read book Twenty Years of School and College English Classic Reprint written by Harvard University and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty Years of School and College English The papers in this pamphlet are republished as a contribution to the discussion provoked by the reports which were presented in 1892 and 1895 to the Board of Overseers of Harvard College by the Committee on Composition and Rhetoric. Each paper was written independently; the author of each was, at 'the time of writing, charged with the duty of reading the examination books in English produced by candidates for admission to Harvard College. The first paper, Oopies of which were sent by the College authorities to the masters of over two hundred and twenty schools, was published only five years after an examination in English composition was for the first time prescribed for admission the last, after examinations in that subject had been going on for nearly twenty years. Taken together, the five papers show a remarkable agreement both in facts and in inferences and both facts and inferences tend to sustain the general conclusion reached on independent grounds by the Committee of the Board of Overseers - the conclusion that the Secondary Schools need to pay more attention to English. Book American College Course Classic Reprint

Download or read book American College Course Classic Reprint written by Seymour Eaton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American College Course As stated in the Introductory Note to the first volume of the present series, these books are in reality, as their names imply, popular studies. Everything in them has been written or prepared with the needs of the general reader or student in view as distinct from those of the professed special student. The intention has been to afford such information respecting the authors selected for treatment as will make the study of them not only a pleasure, but an easy pleasure. To that end broad and general views have been presented rather than minute and special ones. Pains have been taken to illustrate the personalities of the authors; to show them as they were as men and citizens, and in their private life and home relations. Very useful, we trust, will be found the notes prepared for readers for use in their own individual studies of the authors. These notes are sufficiently complete to meet the needs of all classes of readers - those who desire to go pretty far in their studies, as well as those who have time and opportunity to go only a little way. Although published in three volumes, these studies constitute one continuous series. Ten authors have been selected for treatment, the ten greatest names in American literature. The student-reader should not rest satisfied until he has made a pretty thorough acquaintance with the whole ten. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English for Schools, Colleges, and Private Study Observed that either individuals or nations normally start with science. Another error, which has been a long-standing cause of the unfruitfulness so often seen in English teaching, is the attempt to bring the facts and idioms of the language into conformity with the rules of Latin. But what have they now in common? Once, indeed, our English was in flected; but not till long after it began to cast itself into its present simple mould was a constructive grammar given it - then a grammar whose rules and nomenclature were taken from the Latin, with which it had scarcely any formal affinity, to which it bore no formal likeness, and from which, though it has borrowed words, it has bor rowed no principles. 'parts of speech' are recognized in the one, as Of Old, by the inflection test; in' the other, no longer thus, but by the junction Of ideas. Book The Teaching of English in the Universities of England

Download or read book The Teaching of English in the Universities of England written by R. W. Chambers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of English in the Universities of England: With a Note in Comment on the Article I am not overlooking the very great power of the Report for good. This appears on almost every page, and makes it seem ungrateful for a teacher of English to criticize details. Above all, its impartiality is praiseworthy. Any one who looks through the list of members of the Committee will see that it consisted of people whose interests are rather in English literature than in English language, and in literature rather modern than mediaeval. In spite of this, the justice with which the Committee have striven to hold the balance ought to be recognized. They show that sense of fair play which one always expects from a body of Englishmen and Englishwomen. The Committee empha size the importance of mediaeval studies, and of the study of the English language. They insist that the normal English 'school' should be a School' of Language as well as Literature. But protest must be made against the despondent view which the Committee take as to the qualifications to be expected from the candidate for English Honours. Book English History in American School Text Books Classic Reprint

Download or read book English History in American School Text Books Classic Reprint written by Charles Welsh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English History in American School Text-Books One of my earliest recollections is that of being taken to see the fireworks which were set off at the pierhead in Ramsgate harbor to celebrate the declaration of peace after the Crimean War. From that time until I went, when quite a young man, into the Gallery of Battles in Versailles - a gallery in which the glories of the French armies are celebrated in acres of canvas by the famous French artist Detaille - I never fully realized that Englishmen had ever been defeated by land or sea. I had been brought up in the belief that one Englishman could beat three Johnny Crapauds. But here all my illusions on that score were shattered at one rude blow, for about one picture in. Every three represented a defeat of the English in either a naval or a military engagement. Then I made up my mind with Sir Robert Walpole, that I would study anything but history, for history must be false. Some such awakening has no doubt come to almost every thinking man or woman who has been brought up on the old methods of teaching the history of their country, whether they be English or American, French or German, Turk or Russian - this no doubt has its effect in inspiring a patriotic feeling; in keeping alive a belief in the invincibleness of one's own nation; a faith in its good star, which has led men on to further victories and inspired them to yet more valorous deeds than their forefathers have performed. Book A Manual of American Literature

Download or read book A Manual of American Literature written by John S. Hart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of American Literature: A Text-Book for Schools and Colleges HE systematic study of English Literature, as part of the course of ordinary English education, has been introduced almost entirely within' the last thirty years. The reader who will take the trouble to look over the old catalogues of our Colleges and Schools, will find no vestige of such a study prior to 1844. The Class Book of Poetry and the Class Book of Prose, issued in 1844, by the author of the present volume, were a feeble beginning in this line. Though intended primarily for reading-books, they were to some extent studies in literature. The selections from the various authors were in each case prefixed by a brief critical and biographical notice of the author, and were arranged in chronological order, so as to fumish the teacher and the scholar with something like an outline of the general eentse of English Literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American and English Studies, Vol. 2 A Recent essay on Dr. Johnson began with A the remark, "We may talk about him, and praise him, because we shall be the better for so doing; but we shall certainly say nothing new about him. These words may be applied to Abraham Lincoln with the utmost emphasis. Libraries have been written about him. His devoted and accomplished secretaries prepared a monumental work, telling all the things proper that the public should be told of him and of his great days as seen from the White House. A kind of inferior Boswell, but more communicative and even less fastidious, appeared in the person of his own partner in his Illinois law office. Senators and Representatives in Congress vied with each other in biographies and eulogies. Every clerk that served him, every politician that gained access to him, every civilian soldier that owed him promotion or pardon, the very employees of the departments, the captains of tens or hundreds in the remoter party organizations, and, of course, the members of the press, who in pursuit of their duty followed his footsteps and guessed at his purposes, - all felt bound to record and generally to publish their facts and their observations. The statesmen and the press of all nations first laughed at him, then studied him, analyzed him, weighed and estimated him;and at the end the civilized world paid him homage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The College Novel in America: With a Preface How this book happens to appear in its present guise, under the imprint of the Southern Illinois University Press and in the Crosscurrents series, with this particular preface writer, is itself a college-novel anecdote. In 1961, when I was an official of the College English Association, the editor of that organization's journal, the cea Critic - Professor Donald Sears, now of Skidmore College - asked me to write an essay on the academic novel. The result appeared in the May issue as Campus in Wonderland, and it brought a storm of mail. Some of this was expected, since a short article couldn't possibly discuss everyone's favorite book on the subject: suggested additions arrived by every post, and some publishers even sent books which hadn't been mentioned. But a good many of the letters simply expressed happiness because someone had written on the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
