Book An Account of the Danes and Norwegians in England Scotland and Ireland

Download or read book An Account of the Danes and Norwegians in England Scotland and Ireland written by Jens Jakob Asmussen Worsaae and published by Cosimo Classics. This book was released on 1852 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My aim in it has been to convey a juster and less prejudiced notion than prevails at present respecting the Danish and Norwegian conquests." -Jens Jacob Asmussen Worsaae, An Account of the Danes and the Norwegians (1852) An Account of the Danes and the Norwegians in England, Scotland and Ireland (1852) by Jens Warsaae, was based on his research into the Scandinavian invasions of the European mainland. During the 10th century, the European mainland was invaded by Norse settlers from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, who intermarried with native tribes and came to be known as "Normans." While their influence on the history of France was significant, it was even stronger in England, which the Normans conquered in the 11th century. Warsaae's book, commissioned by the Royal Society of Northern Antiquaries, was his attempt to revise the impressions that the 19th century British had of the effects of the Norman conquests on England. This replica of the original text is accompanied by numerous woodcuts.

Download or read book Scandinavian Song written by Anna Hersey and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scandinavian art songs are a unique expression of the cultures of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Although these three countries are distinct from one another, their languages and cultures share many similarities. Common themes found in art and literature include a love of nature, especially of the sea, feelings of longing and melancholy, the contrast between light and dark, the extremes of the northern climate, and lively folk traditions. These shared sensibilities are reflected and expressed in a tangible way through music. Scandinavian art song has faced several challenges over the years in North America (even in the American Midwest, where descendants of Scandinavian immigrants are concentrated). But matters have changed recently with the recent expansion of diction curricula to cover languages other than English, French, German, and Italian. The primary obstacle remains practical resources for the study of art songs and lyric diction of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. This guide remedies this problem. Scandinavian Song is a practical guide to the art songs of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Unlike other sources that give at best a cursory overview of lyric diction in the Scandinavian languages, this guide provides practical information, enabling teachers and students to render transcriptions of Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish texts into the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)—an absolute necessity for any study of repertoire. An extensive survey of available music, sample IPA transcriptions and translations, as well as a website link with native speakers reciting selected song texts, make this book an invaluable resource for students and professors in North American college, university, and conservatory voice programs.

Book The Phonology of Danish

Download or read book The Phonology of Danish written by Hans Basbøll and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-05-06 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the most comprehensive account of the phonology of Danish ever published in any language. It gives a clear analysis of the sound patterns of modern Danish and examines the relations between its speech sounds and grammar. The author develops new models for the analysis of phonology and morphology-phonology interactions, and shows how these may be applied to Danish and to other languages. Danish has an unusually rich vowel system and exhibits radical reduction processes that make it difficult for foreigners to understand. The sound pattern is equally challenging for the analyst. Professor Basbøll develops a non-circular model for the sonority syllable and applies it to Danish phonotactics. He presents a radically new and insightful analysis of stød, a syllable accent which has a complex grammatical distribution and is unique among the world ́s languages. He also describes syllabic and word structures, and stress and intonation. The book is fully referenced and indexed. It will be widely welcomed by phonologists and scholars of Danish, and is likely to become the standard account of Danish phonology.

Book The Almost Nearly Perfect People

Download or read book The Almost Nearly Perfect People written by Michael Booth and published by Picador. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED THE #1 BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR, A WITTY, INFORMATIVE, AND POPULAR TRAVELOGUE ABOUT THE SCANDINAVIAN COUNTRIES AND HOW THEY MAY NOT BE AS HAPPY OR AS PERFECT AS WE ASSUME Journalist Michael Booth has lived among the Scandinavians for more than ten years, and he has grown increasingly frustrated with the rose-tinted view of this part of the world offered up by the Western media. In this timely book he leaves his adopted home of Denmark and embarks on a journey through all five of the Nordic countries to discover who these curious tribes are, the secrets of their success, and, most intriguing of all, what they think of one another. Why are the Danes so happy, despite having the highest taxes? Do the Finns really have the best education system? Are the Icelanders as feral as they sometimes appear? How are the Norwegians spending their fantastic oil wealth? And why do all of them hate the Swedes? In The Almost Nearly Perfect People Michael Booth explains who the Scandinavians are, how they differ and why, and what their quirks and foibles are, and he explores why these societies have become so successful and models for the world. Along the way a more nuanced, often darker picture emerges of a region plagued by taboos, characterized by suffocating parochialism, and populated by extremists of various shades. They may very well be almost nearly perfect, but it isn't easy being Scandinavian.

Book Repetition and Philosophical Crumbs

Download or read book Repetition and Philosophical Crumbs written by Soren Kierkegaard and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-05-14 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The love of repetition is in truth the only happy love' So says Constantine Constantius on the first page of Kierkegaard's Repetition. Life itself, according to Kierkegaard's pseudonymous narrator, is a repetition, and in the course of this witty, playful work Constantius explores the nature of love and happiness, the passing of time and the importance of moving forward (and backward). The ironically entitled Philosophical Crumbs pursues the investigation of faith and love and their tense relationship with reason. Written only a year apart, these two works complement each other and give the reader a unique insight into the breadth and substance of Kierkegaard's thought. The first reads like a novel and the second like a Platonic dialogue, but both engage, in different ways, the same challenging issues. These are the first translations to convey the literary quality and philosophical precision of the originals. They were not intended, however, for philosophers, but for anyone who feels drawn to the question of the ultimate truth of human existence and the source of human happiness. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book Visible Learning

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Hattie
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2008-11-19
  • ISBN : 1134024126
  • Pages : 389 pages

Download or read book Visible Learning written by John Hattie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique and ground-breaking book is the result of 15 years research and synthesises over 800 meta-analyses on the influences on achievement in school-aged students. It builds a story about the power of teachers, feedback, and a model of learning and understanding. The research involves many millions of students and represents the largest ever evidence based research into what actually works in schools to improve learning. Areas covered include the influence of the student, home, school, curricula, teacher, and teaching strategies. A model of teaching and learning is developed based on the notion of visible teaching and visible learning. A major message is that what works best for students is similar to what works best for teachers – an attention to setting challenging learning intentions, being clear about what success means, and an attention to learning strategies for developing conceptual understanding about what teachers and students know and understand. Although the current evidence based fad has turned into a debate about test scores, this book is about using evidence to build and defend a model of teaching and learning. A major contribution is a fascinating benchmark/dashboard for comparing many innovations in teaching and schools.

Book The Phonology of Norwegian

Download or read book The Phonology of Norwegian written by Gjert Kristoffersen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A the end of the fourteenth century, Norway, having previously been an independent kingdom, became by conquest a province of Denmark and remained so for three centuries. In1814, as part of the fall-out from the Napoleonic wars, the country became a largely independent nation within the monarchy of Sweden. By this time, however, Danish had become the language of government, commerce, and education, as well as of the middle and upper classes. Nationalistic Norwegians sought to reestablish native identity by creating and promulgating a new language based partly on rural dialects and partly on Old Norse. The upper and middle classes sought to retain a form of Norwegian close to Danish that would be intelligible to themselves and to their neighbours in Sweden and Denmark. The controversy has gone on ever since. One result is that the standard dictionaries of Norwegian ignore pronunciation, for no version can be counted as 'received'. Another is that there has been considerable variety and change in Norwe
