Book English Business Jargon and Slang

Download or read book English Business Jargon and Slang written by Suzan St. Maur and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jargon and slang have wormed their way into almost every business document, speech, and conversation that we have today. With online business communications being much more conversational and informal than the written business communications of the past, they positively encourage the use of figurative speech: ergo, more jargon, more slang. This book is by no means all encompassing, but the author has researched and shared several hundred of the most commonly used terms. Not only do we now know what they all mean but, where appropriate, we also learn their origins—some of which are fascinating and very surprising. A very valuable handbook for any student or practitioner in business to help demystify this crazy language called “English.”

Book Why Business People Speak Like Idiots

Download or read book Why Business People Speak Like Idiots written by Brian Fugere and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2005-02-22 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a fundamental disconnection between the way business people speak and real people communicate. From advertisers, big business and CEOs - the blather is coming at us in waves. The International Language of Business is no longer English - it's gobbledygook. The authors blindly discovered the enormity of the problem in June 2003 with the launch of Bullfighter, an anti-jargon software tool. But jargon is just one symptom in a larger problem afflicting corporate communications today: the wholesale inability to connect with an audience. In the form of admirably straight-talk, we discover how to avoid the 'obscurity trap', 'the anonymity trap', the 'hard-sell trap' and most importantly, 'the tedium trap'. In this witty and practical new book readers are given all the tools they need to fight the 'spin' and learn to speak like the rest of us.

Book The Language of Thieves and Vagabonds

Download or read book The Language of Thieves and Vagabonds written by Maurizio Gotti and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of the volume is the analysis of the main dictionaries and glossaries of the canting language (the particular jargon spoken by thieves and vagabonds) that appeared in the 17th and 18th centuries. The scholars' attention has mostly concentrated on the earliest publications - particulary those appearing in the Elizabethan period -, while relatively little research has investigated subsequent canting dictionaries and glossaries. The aim of the present volume is to fill this gap. The main works on canting published in the 17th and 18th centuries are analysed in chapters 3 to 10. The first two chapters provide a necessary introduction to the investigation carried out in the subsequent sections, examining the great increase in the numbers of vagabonds and criminals in England in that period from a sociohistorical perspective and reviewing the 16th-century English literature about the underworld. The subsequent eight chapters give a detailed analysis of the main works on canting which appeared in the second part of the 17th century and during the whole of the 18th century. The specific features of each publication are identified, as well as the method adopted by its author in the compilation of his dictionary/glossary and the most likely sources of its entries, in order to determine the degree of novelty and relevance that his contribution has brought to this field. The final chapter deals with the evolution in the meaning of the term 'cant' itself in the period taken into consideration.
