Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old English Bible: And Other Essays And first it is well to understand that from the earliest Christian times there was held to be a sacred character about books. In fact there was ever a close connection between them and the Church, and the House of God itself was long considered the most fitting place for the aumbry of manuscripts, which men in those days of simple faith regarded as among the most precious of God's gifts. If I might hazard a guess why this should have been so, it would be that these were partly, if not mostly, made up of copies of the Holy Scriptures, or of works of the Fathers of the Church commenting on them; and to the reverential spirit of the early ages of the faith, no more fitting place could be imagined to preserve these sacred treasures than the Church. The very Latin word now used for a library (bibliotheca) was used to signify the Holy Bible itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Essays on Church and Religion The present volume closes the series of my attempts to deal directly with questions concerning religion and the Church. Indirectly such questions must often, in all serious literary work, present themselves; but in this volume I make them my direct object for the last time. Assuredly it was not for my own pleasure that I entered upon them at first, and it is with anything but reluctance that I now part from them. Neither can I be ignorant what offence my handling of them has given to many whose good-will I value, and with what relief they will learn that the handling is now to cease. Personal considerations, however, ought not in a matter like this to bear sway; and they have not, in fact, determined me to bring to an end the work which I had been pursuing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient British Church: A Historical Essay The following Essay having been adjudged to be the best on 'The Ancient British Church' of the Essays submitted for competition at the National Eisteddfod of 1876, I have not felt myself at liberty to introduce alterations except in the way of phrase and illustration, together with the addition of some of the Notes and the latter part of Chapter V. The necessity of keeping closely in my treatment of the subject to the lines marked out by the Committee in their programme, is my apology for the disproportionate length at which I have discussed some points, and for the consequent want of symmetry which I feel pervades the whole Essay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Essays: Essays on the Science of Religion The essay on Ancient Prayers has never, as far as I can ascertain, been published before. On looking through my father's papers I dis covered it among several unfinished essays, and as it was apparently ready for press I have included it in the present volume. The last essay, Is Man Immortal?' has also never been published in England, though it appeared in several American newspapers some years ago under the auspices of the American Press Association I am very grateful to that Association for supplying me with the manuscript which enables me to give it here as originally written. I have placed this article at the end of the volume, as it seemed to me that, whether they agree with its reasoning or not, every reader of my father's writings will feel that the last paragraph forms a beautiful ending to his literary work, a fitting farewell to the world which he was always trying to instruct and improve. On the one hand, it possesses enough of the principle of authority to shed its hallowing influence over the monarchy; and on the other, it leaves sufficient room for the liberty of thought, so as to admit the right of discussion, the principle of inde pendent enterprise, and the intervention of the country generally in the affairs of state. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Thought in England, From the Reformation to the End of Last Century, Vol. 3: A Contribution to the History of Theology At the end of a work so extensive as this, an author, I suppose, always feels how much better it would be done if he had it to do again. When I began I had but a partial knowledge of the ground to be traversed, and of a few important parts I knew nothing. This is the cause of one or two irregularities which otherwise would have been avoided. Some writers, for instance, are noticed at more length than others who are perhaps of greater importance. In the preface to my essay on Pantheism I have recorded the circumstances which determined me to devote some years to the special study of theology. When I came to London, in 1859, I began a course of reading with the object of inquiring into the nature of revelation and the evidences by which it is supported. At the end of four years I had formed a plan of something like a complete history of theology, which would set forth the special character of Christianity and its relation to other religions. In the spring of 1863 I showed the outlines of my work to the late Professor Maurice, who had gone over large portions of the same field, and whose writings had been of great service to me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Retrospect of the Religious Life of England: Or, the Church, Puritanism, and Free Inquiry I have not said this, with any view of evading the censures to which, with the fairest criticism, the following pages will, I am quite aware, be justly liable, but only to protect them from the gratuitous injury of being tried by too high a standard. I offer them as little more than a sketch - exhibiting the general outline and pro minent features of the historical development of the religious life Of England. I make no preten sion to deep and original research. The facts recited or alluded to, are such as are familiar to every student of our national history. What I here present of my own, is simply the conception of those facts - the relation I have ventured to establish between them - the principles to which I have thought they might be referred - and the inferences which they have seemed to me to yield. I have wished to find out, if I could, the meaning of our religious history. Whether I have in any degree succeeded, the reader will judge. I may, however, state, that I have endeavoured to take my facts from the most authentic sources acces sible to me, and that the authorities immediately quoted, are those which I have either read or con. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Religion in England: A Book for Young Folk For the beginning of the story of religion in England we must go back in thought to a dim and far-off time. Reader, is there an old church or the ruin of some ancient castle in your neighbourhood? We have to go back far beyond the time when that was built - hundreds and hundreds of years further back - to a time when forests and swamps covered the greatest part of our island, and the only inhabitants were tribes of half-naked savages, as rude and fierce as the New Zealanders or the Red Indians. We must not think of all the ancient world as lying in this kind of barbarism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He points out that it speaks of 'a religious man only once, and of religion only twice, except Where it speaks of the Jews' religion to condemn it, and shows What an empty, blind, useless thing it Was.' 1 Kingsley's statement has that touch of exaggeration in it Which attracts attention; but there can be no doubt that the distinction he indicates exists, and it is essential that we should remember it. Especially must it be borne in mind When dealing With the subject of the Revival of Religion.' We must determine from the outset Whether we are to.
