Book Engineering Applications of Soil Surveying and Mapping

Download or read book Engineering Applications of Soil Surveying and Mapping written by National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 6th of a related series sponsored by the Committee on Surveying, Mapping and Classification of Soils. It tabulates useful information on the status of geologic and agricultural mapping in the United States, lists geologists and soil scientists who may be able to assist the engineer in obtaining more precise soil and subsurface information from the interpretation of these special purpose maps, and contains a series of five papers and one discussion on the development and application of soil survey information to the design and construction of highways.

Book Digital Soil Mapping with Limited Data

Download or read book Digital Soil Mapping with Limited Data written by Alfred E. Hartemink and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Signi?cant technological advances have been few and far between in the past approximately one hundred years of soil survey activities. Perhaps one of the most innovative techniques in the history of soil survey was the introduction of aerial photographs as base maps for ?eld mapping, which replaced the conventional base map laboriously prepared by planetable and alidade. Such a relatively simple idea by today’s standards revolutionized soil surveys by vastly increasing the accuracy and ef?ciently. Yet, even this innovative approach did not gain universal acceptance immediately and was hampered by a lack of aerial coverage of the world, funds to cover the costs, and in some cases a reluctance by some soil mappers and cartog- phers to change. Digital Soil Mapping (DSM), which is already being used and tested by groups of dedicated and innovative pedologists, is perhaps the next great advancement in delivering soil survey information. However, like many new technologies, it too has yet to gain universal acceptance and is hampered by ignorance on the part of some pedologists and other scientists. DSM is a spatial soil information system created by numerical models that - count for the spatial and temporal variations of soil properties based on soil - formation and related environmental variables (Lagacheric and McBratney, 2007).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we enter the last decades of the twentieth century, many persistent and perplexing problems continue to afflict humankind. Thus it is appropriate to address, in a new group of books, two of the monumental issues that haunt people throughout the world. Soils and the Environment by Professor Gerald W. Olson is the first book in this new publish ing program on Environment, Energy, and Society. The purpose of all these books will be to explore the many interrelated facets of these topics and to provide guidance for deal ing with problems and offering ideas for their solutions. Environment and energy are twin problems that occupy what many believe to be opposite sides of a two-headed coin. They are often viewed as being antithetical and incompatible. The various books in this program will try to place in perspective the options that are available to those who design policy and plan and manage societal matters. Typical of books being developed currently are ones on coal resources, environmental geoscience, environmental pollution, land-use planning, nuclear energy, mineral resources, and water resources. However, because soils are at the very heart of civilization and provide the building block for human sustenance, it is fitting to inaugurate this series with Dr. Olson's timely analysis of soils. Unfortu nately, these most vital resources seen. to have low priority in many farming enterprises, urbanization projects, deforestation schemes, and mining and developmental terrain changes.

This is a corss-section of papers by those highway departments.
