Book Engineering Analysis of the Inelastic Stress Response of a Structural Metal Under Variable Cyclic Strains

Download or read book Engineering Analysis of the Inelastic Stress Response of a Structural Metal Under Variable Cyclic Strains written by HR. Jhansale and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inelastic stress response under strain cycling conditions is analyzed in terms of the three important governing phenomena, namely, memory of prior history, cyclic hardening or softening, and cyclic mean stress relaxation. Independent formulations to describe these respective features consist of a set of hysteresis rules, a set of transient stress-strain relations, and an empirical exponential model. A new approach to accurately describe the hysteresis loop shape characteristics is also presented. while strain amplitude and number of cycles are used as the primary variables influencing cyclic hardening, softening, and relaxation, the effect of other variables on these features and hence their mutual interactions are observed to be small. Therefore, as a first approximation it is postulated that independent formulations based on constant amplitude test data are applicable to spectrum loading situations. Computer based models resulting from this analysis are suitable for predicting the cyclic stress-strain and fatigue response of ductile structural metals and also provide a basis for developing general flexural response models.

Book Cyclic plasticity modeling and multiaxial fatigue assessment for an austenitic steel

Download or read book Cyclic plasticity modeling and multiaxial fatigue assessment for an austenitic steel written by Jie Fang and published by Herbert Utz Verlag. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work aims at engineers and scientists in the field of computational mechanics of materials. The objective of this work is to develop a suitable constitutive law and apply it to study effects of cyclic loading and geometry on the fatigue assessment. Firstly, a systematical investigation on the mechanic behaviors of an austenitic stainless steel is carried out. Different multiaxial fatigue life prediction models are studied to assess fatigue damage. The Karim-Ohno kinematic hardening model is extended to incorporate more complex mechanical behaviors. The proposed constitutive model is implemented into FEM code ABAQUS. Finally a computational fatigue analysis methodology is proposed for performing life prediction of notched components based on elastic-plastic computation.

Book A Unified Approach for Modeling Inelastic Behavior of Structural Metals Under Complex Cyclic Loadings

Download or read book A Unified Approach for Modeling Inelastic Behavior of Structural Metals Under Complex Cyclic Loadings written by H. R. Jhansale and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report develops a general procedure for modeling the inelastic stress-strain response of structural metals subjected to complex irregular cyclic loadings. The model is ideally suited for programming on a digital computer and uses 'cyclic' material parameters (or properties) determined from simple constant strain amplitude cyclic tests. Four model formulations which include three degrees of simplification in the model are proposed and their appropriate applications are indicated. In its most complete formulation, the model is capable of simulating all the important observed phenomena of a wide range of structural metals, including hotworked and coldworked steels and aircrfaft aluminums. These phenomena include 'memory' of prior history, cyclic hardening, cyclic softening, cyclic relaxation, cyclic creep, and the observed deviation from the Masing behavior. A major contribution of this report is in the development of a unified characterization of these phenomena. The model and the 'cyclic' material parameters developed provide the necessary base for formulating a general constitutive equation in the multiaxial state of stress. Such constitutive equations are directly adoptable in the finite element codes of nonlinear structural analysis programs. The model is also useful in realistic shakedown analysis of structures and fatigue analysis of complex load histories. (Author).

Book Fatigue Damage Crack Growth and Life Prediction

Download or read book Fatigue Damage Crack Growth and Life Prediction written by F. Ellyin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue failure is a multi-stage process. It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.

Book High Temperature Fatigue

Download or read book High Temperature Fatigue written by R.P. Skelton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 35 years ago, thermal fatigue was identified as an important phenomenon which limited the lifetime of high temperature plant. In the intervening years many investigations have been carried out, primarily to give guidance on likely endurance (especially in the presence of time dependent deformation) but latterly, with the introduction of sophisticated testing machines, to provide knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of failure. A previous edited book (Fatigue at High Temperature, Elsevier Applied Science Publishers, 1983) summarised the state-of-the-art of high temperature fatigue testing and examined the factors influencing life, such as stress state, environment and microstructural effects. It also considered, in some detail, cyclic crack growth as a more rigorous approach to life limitation. The aim of the present volume (which in style and format follows exactly the same lines as its predecessor) is once again to pursue the desire to translate detailed laboratory knowledge into engineering design and assessment. There is, for example, a need to consider the limitations of the laboratory specimen and its relationship with engineering features. Many design procedures still rely on a simple endurance approach based on failure of a smooth specimen, and this is taken to indicate crack initiation in the component. In this volume, therefore, crack propagation is covered only incidentally, emphasis being placed instead on basic cyclic stress strain properties, non-isothermal behaviour, metallography, failure criteria and the need for agreed testing procedures.

Book Unified Plasticity for Engineering Applications

Download or read book Unified Plasticity for Engineering Applications written by Sol R. Bodner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerably simplified models of macroscopic material behavior, such as the idealization for metals of elastic-time independent plastic response with a yield (onset) criterion, have served the engineering profession well for many years. They are still basic to the design and analysis of most structural applications. In the need to use materials more effectively, there are circumstances where those traditional models are not adequate, and constitutive laws that are more physically realistic have to be employed. This is especially relevant to conditions where the inherent time dependence of inelastic deformations, referred to as "viscoplasticity", is pronounced such as at elevated temperatures and for high strain rates. Unified theories of elastic-viscoplastic material behavior, which are primarily applicable for metals and metallic alloys, combine all aspects of inelastic response into a set of time dependent equations with a single inelastic strain rate variable. For such theories, creep under constant stress, stress relaxation under constant strain, and stress-strain relations at constant rates are each special cases of a general formulation. Those equations mayor may not include a yield criterion, but models which do not separate a fully elastic region from the overall response could be considered "unified" in a more general sense. The theories have reached a level of development and maturity where they are being used in a number of sophisticated engineering applications. However, they have not yet become a standard method of material representation for general engineering practice.
