Book Community Resilience under the Impact of Urbanisation and Climate Change

Download or read book Community Resilience under the Impact of Urbanisation and Climate Change written by Chirisa, Innocent and published by Langaa RPCIG. This book was released on 2019-01-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world today faces messy problems, what in some circles has been called global weirding, the term resilience has taken centre stage. This is crunch time –as we grapple with the negative effects of both climate change and urbanisation. Some commentators have compared the huge problems we face today to Oom Schalk’s proverbial leopard waiting for us in the withaak’s shade. Do we endlessly count Oom Schalk’s proverbial leopard’s spots? This is the question posed by a stellar cast of academics, researchers, and experts whose contributions in this text is a rallying cry for action to build resilience to the challenging impact of urbanisation and climate change. To that end, this volume gives hope about the potential for human agency. Our challenge however, is to re-examine our values, to change our conservation conversation and return to a more wise and holistic understanding of ourselves and our place in the Universe. Perhaps, then only can the obituaries on our demise stay locked in the drawer.

Book Women Empowerment and Development

Download or read book Women Empowerment and Development written by Sameera Maiti and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empowerment of women through gainful employment is a constituent-as well as instrument-of development in any country. No country can be deemed developed if half of its population is severely disadvantaged in terms of basic needs, livelihood options, access to knowledge, and political voice. A natural corollary of ensuring gender equality is the elimination of gender discrimination. Women's lack of economic empowerment not only impedes growth and poverty reduction, but also has a host of other negative impacts including less favourable education and health outcomes for children. Thus, it is extremely important to ensure that women are economically, socially, and politically empowered. Effective and coordinated plans and programs for the full implementation of women-oriented policies require a clear research-based knowledge of ground realities of the socio-economic status of women, particularly rural women. This volume is the outcome of the findings of academicians and researchers from different disciplines. The 11 papers included in this work throw light on various dimensions of women empowerment in India. Book Advancing Sustainable Development and Women s Empowerment in Asia

Download or read book Advancing Sustainable Development and Women s Empowerment in Asia written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first 10 years since it was designed, the EU-funded SWITCH-Asia Programme has been supporting 95 grant projects across 18 developing countries in South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia. These projects promote Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) amongst Asian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), business intermediaries and consumer organisations. In their pursuit of SCP promotion and related contribution to poverty alleviation and sustainable, environment-friendly economic growth, project propos-als are also encouraged to support women's empowerment. Extensive consultations with projects and a review of their implementation practice indicate that to date approximately 20% of them, including both ongoing and completed projects, have directly contributed to empower women in the course of their interventions, although they do not necessarily have gendered data and reports on results and impact. During their lifetime, 19 projects generated specific results supporting women's empowerment in 11 countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia, which traditionally have some of the lowest rates of women's empowerment in the Asia Pacific region. These 19 projects are presented as case studies in this publication. They are grouped into four main thematic areas, based on their sector of intervention: garment and textile, agriculture and natural resources (jute, rattan and forestry), energy and sustainable consumption.
