Book Energy Efficiency in Housing

Download or read book Energy Efficiency in Housing written by Malcolm Bell and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book with a broad agenda which draws together a considerable body of current knowledge from related but discrete disciplines in one compact and readable volume. It is particularly gratifying to find problems of acute fuel poverty within existing thermally sub-standard mass housing addressed alongside prospects for new-build housing, as well as existing dwellings where thermal comfort is already affordable. In the first case, measures to introduce energy efficiency promise much improved comfort and well-being for the occupants, but little, if any, energy saving; whereas in the second and third cases, good design can offer significant savings in fuel and CO2 output with quite short pay-back periods. The authors grasp this nettle firmly, devoting a chapter to energy poverty and health, as well as placing this in the context of global changes in climate, conservation technologies, structures of ownership, land-use planning and what is termed "the behavioral dimension." The scope of the book is wide and the order of content is well structured. There are many useful references, and it is a useful addition to the shelves of anyone operating in the housing and energy-efficiency arena.

Book The ENERGY EFFICIENT HOME

Download or read book The ENERGY EFFICIENT HOME written by Patrick Waterfield and published by Crowood. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reducing energy consumption and costs is an issue of ever-increasing importance, and European and national legislation aimed at reducing carbon emissions is tightening up minimum energy standards for new buildings as well as those being extended or renovated. Energy-saving measures in the home will, therefore, become ever more cost-effective throughout our lifetimes. This book covers every aspect of the efficient consumption of energy in the home including the following and much more: the position of the dwelling, its method of construction and the materials used; energy rating and the legal framework; insulation and U-values; windows and doors; conservatories, sunrooms and loft conversions; heating and hot-water systems; lighting and making the best use of daylight; ventilation; renewable energy technologies; appliances, gadgets and housekeeping; the wider environmental issues including water economy and recycling. This non-technical book is fully revised and updated to take account of recent legislation and developments in energy efficient products and techniques.

Book Driving Demand for Home Energy Improvements

Download or read book Driving Demand for Home Energy Improvements written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy makers and program designers in the U.S. and abroad are deeply concerned with the question of how to scale up energy efficiency to a level that is commensurate both to the scale of the energy and climate challenges we face, and to the potential for energy savings that has been touted for decades. When policy makers ask what energy efficiency can do, the answers usually revolve around the technical and economic potential of energy efficiency - they rarely hone in on the element of energy demand that matters most for changing energy usage in existing homes: the consumer. A growing literature is concerned with the behavioral underpinnings of energy consumption. We examine a narrower, related subject: How can millions of Americans be persuaded to divert valued time and resources into upgrading their homes to eliminate energy waste, avoid high utility bills, and spur the economy? With hundreds of millions of public dollars flowing into incentives, workforce training, and other initiatives to support comprehensive home energy improvements, it makes sense to review the history of these programs and begin gleaning best practices for encouraging comprehensive home energy improvements. Looking across 30 years of energy efficiency programs that targeted the residential market, many of the same issues that confronted past program administrators are relevant today: How do we cost-effectively motivate customers to take action? Who can we partner with to increase program participation? How do we get residential efficiency programs to scale? While there is no proven formula - and only limited success to date with reliably motivating large numbers of Americans to invest in comprehensive home energy improvements, especially if they are being asked to pay for a majority of the improvement costs - there is a rich and varied history of experiences that new programs can draw upon. Our primary audiences are policy makers and program designers - especially those that are relatively new to the field, such as the over 2,000 towns, cities, states, and regions who are recipients of American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funds for clean energy programs. This report synthesizes lessons from first generation programs, highlights emerging best practices, and suggests methods and approaches to use in designing, implementing, and evaluating these programs. We examined 14 residential energy efficiency programs, conducted an extensive literature review, interviewed industry experts, and surveyed residential contractors to draw out these lessons.

Book Energy Efficiency for Historic Houses

Download or read book Energy Efficiency for Historic Houses written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This guide was funded by the Connecticut Green Bank in coordination with the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to help owners of historic buildings. The focus is on historic houses, but some information may be helpful to owners of historic commercial properties. The first goal is to help you understand that integrating historic preservation and energy efficiency can be successful. The second is to help you figure out if your house is considered “historic,” what that means, and what the review process is for state- or federally-funded energy-efficiency upgrades. The final goal is to help you navigate the vast amount of information available on energy improvements so you can make the best possible decisions for your property." --Page 2.
