Nagaland is a state in the northeastern part of India that is surrounded by the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh to the north, Assam to the west, Manipur to the south, and the Sagaing Region of Myanmar to the east. This state is home to a rich tapestry of diverse indigenous ethnic groups, each of which preserves its own distinct cultural practices, linguistic norms, and traditional practices. When we travel further back in time, we 1nd that Nagaland's history is 1lled with ancient events and people. The region has been inhabited by a large number of indigenous groups since the beginning of documented history, which dates back to the 3Bth century. These communities have been responsible for the development of vibrant cultures that have withstood the test of time. The formidable xritish colonial troops set out on an e9pansionary trip across the beautiful landscapes of Northeast India during the 3jth century. This Eourney q CNHGANTINL NALA GI:: SJ A OUYRNC2 TGRUYLG TIMC took them through the mythical Naga Gills as well as other parts of the region. The courageous Nagas resisted strongly the imposition of foreign rule and refused to give up their treasured autonomy, which led to a confrontation that escalated 4uickly into a violent stando7. The year 3jZz marked the beginning of a new era in India, and with it came the emergence of an important debate about the political status of the Naga Gills. The powerful Naga National Houncil, which was led by the indomitable Dapu Phi6o, echoed the desires of the Naga people and adamantly demanded that the Naga people have their own sovereign nation. They raised the banner of armed conVict in an e7ort to carve out their own uni4ue path in life, which was motivated by the desire to pursue their most cherished aspirations.T he Indian government, on the other hand, steadfastly maintained its position and defended Nagaland's status as an essential component of the developing nation. The competition of ideologies and the 1ght for recognition gave rise to a prolonged insurgency, a contest of wills that would last for decades and impede the region's economic development and advancement. It was not until the morning of Fecember 3, 3j5B, that Nagaland was o°cially accepted as the 35th state of India, so permanently etching its place in the ever-evolving tapestry of the nation. The turbulent history of this region is overshadowed by the natural, cultural, and environmental riches that lay Eust beyond its borders. The awe-inspiring F6uko 0alley in 0iswema is a Eewel that is tucked away in the southern parts of the state of Nagaland. It is cradled by the mountainous topography of Nagaland,

Book excerpt: Since the day it became a state, Nagaland has struggled with a variety of issues, including insurgency, unemployment, underdevelopment, and corruption; nonetheless, the issue of illegal immigration has consistently been one of its most pressing concerns. Since the 1970s or even before, illegal immigration has been taking 2 ENCHANTING NAGA HILLS: A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME COPY place in Nagaland, particularly in regions bordering Assam. However, the rate of illegal immigration has increased signi8cantly since the 19D0s. Although there is a fair amount of documentation regarding immigration in Assam and Tripura, not much work has been done regarding the topic in Nagaland. jespite the many challenges that illegal immigration brings to the state, there is a paucity of research on the sub3ect. The population of Nagaland increased by %9.DD6 during the 1950s, 40.046 during the 1970s, 45.0D6 during the 19D0s, and (0.0D6 during the 1991-2001 period )according to the 2001 CensusK. However, the 2011 Census in Nagaland recorded a negative growth rate in total population by )-K0.(76, which is an unusual pattern in population growth. Nevertheless, the decadal population increase in the districts of jimapur and xohima was respectively 2%.1% and 22.D0 percent, which was signi8cantly higher than the national average of 17.5( percent in 2011. The abnormally high rate of population eBpansion can not only be attributed to natural growth, but it can also be thought to be the result of immigration. Woth of these eBplanations are possible. Although the rate of population growth has not been consistent throughout the state, the districts of jimapur and qokha that border Assam have reported an abnormally high rate of population eBpansion. The qokha district saw the most percentage increase in population between the years 1991 and 2001, with 94.01 percent, making it the fastest growing district in the country.

Book The Naga Ethnic Movement for a Separate Homeland

Download or read book The Naga Ethnic Movement for a Separate Homeland written by Namrata Goswami and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Namrata Goswami’s research on the Naga armed ethnic movement offers a compelling narrative on how conflict has affected the daily lives of the Nagas. This volume is an account of the Naga ethnic movement going on in India since 1918, covering both historical and contemporary aspects of the conflict. Based on over a decade of ethnographic work among the Naga rebels and movement zones, personal interviews, and secondary data, the author offers insights into how the Naga population perceives their meeting point with the institutions of the Indian state, especially the army and the paramilitary. The book documents what it is like, to live in a conflict zone and the restraints and thought processes that it cultivates especially among the youth. The book reveals gripping stories of tremendous courage and conviction from people who have thought about the political unrest, been born into it, taken part in it, or have been affected by it. The Naga Ethnic Movement for a Separate Homeland reflects the Nagas’ love for their land, tracing the poignant mix of nature, land, identity, emotions, culture as well as the inter-ethnic differences that exacerbate the conflict.
