Book Imagining Disarmament Enchanting International Relations

Download or read book Imagining Disarmament Enchanting International Relations written by Matthew Breay Bolton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the global politics of disarmament through emerging international relations (IR) theories of discourse and imagination. Each chapter reflects on an aspect of contemporary activism on weapons through an analogous story from literary tradition. Shahrazade, convenor of the 1001 Nights, offers a potent metaphor for the humanitarian advocacy seeking to moderate the behaviour of violent people. The author reads Don Quixote in Cambodia’s minefields, reflects on Lysistrata at Greenham Common and considers how tropes in The Tempest were enrolled in both Pacific nuclear testing and efforts to resist it. The book draws on ethnographic fieldwork in communities affected by weapons and disarmament advocacy at the UN and calls for a re-enchantment of IR, alive to affect, ritual and myth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age when the Bible has been stripped of its sacredness and functional biblical illiteracy reigns, this book makes the case that we must work to re-enchant the text in order to return the Bible to its rightful place in the lives of Christians. Cheryl Bridges Johns explains how the Enlightenment's turn to the rational human subject made it possible to objectify the Bible and has distorted our interpretations of Scripture. This move generated a belief that studying the Bible was primarily a means of supporting facts and providing evidence of competing visions of reality. This "modern" version of the Bible does not trouble our nights with apocalyptic images. It has been stripped of its power. She also shows that both "liberal" and "fundamentalist" interpretation are failed forms of disenchanted readings. Johns argues that we must rediscover the Bible as a sacred, dangerous, mysterious, and presence-filled wonderland to counteract biblical illiteracy in an increasingly post-Christian landscape.

Book Re enchanting Art Therapy

Download or read book Re enchanting Art Therapy written by Lynn Kapitan and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2003 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-Enchanting Art Therapy is written for art therapists, supervisors, students, and colleagues in related fields who seek to approach their work as a living, artistic practice but struggle to do so in the often toxic work environments where art therapy is most needed. Asking "What kills creative vitality?" research uncovered core images that art therapists associate with toxic work and the elements of re-enchantment. Author Lynn Kapitan relates, in stories and images of art therapists, how re-enchantment is a cycling process that requires an unambivalent relationship with creative power. Chapter One uses the myth of the dragon to tell stories of art therapists awakening creative energy in a constantly changing, postmodern world. Chapter Two explores transformation in the symbol of the begging bowl held out to accept whatever is placed within as the materials for creative renewal. Using the research method of "collaborative witness," Chapter Three offers transformative stories of several disenchanted art therapists who discover their disconnection from the primordial source of their creativity in the imagery of water. A community intervention in Chapter Four, the "Reflective Circle of Peers," presents issues and methods that art therapists use to transform their practices. In Chapter Five, Lynn Kapitan addresses fears and yearning in the toxic work environment, where such practices as playing with wolves and painting in the crossroads teach her the values of the threshold space and the fierce hearted embrace of her creativity. Re-Enchanting Art Therapy challenges art therapists to transform the practice of art therapy with creative vitality.

Book Imagining Early Modern Histories

Download or read book Imagining Early Modern Histories written by Elizabeth Ketner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting textual mediations of history in early modernity, this volume adds nuance to our understanding of the contributions fiction and fictionalizing make to the shape and texture of versions of and debates about history during that period. Geographically, the scope of the essays extends beyond Europe and England to include Asia and Africa. Contributors take a number of different approaches to understand the relationship between history, fiction, and broader themes in early modern culture. They analyze the ways fiction writers use historical sources, fictional texts translate ideas about the past into a vernacular accessible to broad audiences, fictional depictions and interpretations shape historical action, and the ways in which nonfictional texts and accounts were given fictional histories of their own, intentionally or not, through transmission and interpretation. By combining the already contested idea of fiction with performance, action, and ideas/ideology, this collection provides a more thorough consideration of fictional histories in the early modern period. It also covers more than two centuries of primary material, providing a longer perspective on the changing and complex role of history in forming early modern national, gendered, and cultural identities.

Book The Power of Self

Download or read book The Power of Self written by LeNora Millen and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-18 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of Self, once natural and intimate to man speaks of the internal flame burning with the intensity of a time when humankind embraced power with a force that speaks to God and nature. It was natural for man to breathe the energy of the gods into the lungs, as the evolving of thought manifested upon man’s entire existence. Also bestowed upon man, was enlightenment, which on occasion was re-ignited to conquer and consume darkness of thought. In the midst of standing within the shadows of doubt and fear, the light that resonated inward was set free upon the soil from which thought springs forth. Within the vastness of the universe, nature taunts man to reconnect to a forgotten power, as the fluttering wings of the butterfly, soaring above the winds of change, is likened to the phoenix rising from the ashes only to emerge with renewed spirit and hope. Whispers of generations past tap into the conscious of a people connected to all that is—in the stillness of the moment, they await another sign. Foretelling of things to come within the skies, the rainforest echo’s the cries of the ancestor’s warnings. They communicate telepathically—no words spoken, the energy spoke for them instead. Connecting with nature, while giving homage to the trees firmly rooted within the earth's surface, the spark within man began to dim, the “I am” would venture deep within the psyche of man. Why and how did man lose touch with the essence of such a powerful inner strength? Is it possible to transform thinking to connect to the “I am?” The Power of Self is not just a book about transforming and evolving; this book is about intimacy with self, far beyond merely knowing self, which is key to becoming more aware and self-empowered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Greeley has written a lively, controversial and stimulating book in which he describes a Catholic imagination which is different from (not better or worse than) a Protestant imagination. Going beyond his own position, I believe Protestants have much to learn not just about the Catholic imagination but from it as he describes it."—Robert Bellah, coauthor of Habits of the Heart "Andrew Greeley is the most vivid sociological writer of our time. By studying artists and artisans directly, he brings David Tracy's theory of religious imagination to life. The survey data show that ordinary people have imaginations too, and that the lay person's imagination is also framed by religious tradition. This book is a tour de force."—Michael Hout, University of California, Berkeley

Book Re enchanting Nationalisms

Download or read book Re enchanting Nationalisms written by Brad West and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides original insight into the way we now engage and remember national history. Drawing on fieldwork and analysis of international case studies on state commemoration, memorialization, recreational and tourism and times of disaster and crisis, the author demonstrates that not only does the nation frequently retain a strong cultural relevance in our global world but that the emergence of new forms of ritual and remembrance means that in many instances we are seeing the re-enchantment of nationalism. Drawing upon and developing an empirically informed cultural sociology, the author charts the distinctive qualities of these new national rites and how they feed into and advance particular cosmopolitan and orthodox national politics. Because social science has so often wrongly assumed the end of nationalism, the insights of this of the book about the possibilities and limitations of contemporary nationalism demand serious consideration by academics and also by policy makers and the general public.
