Book Employment Management Employee Representation and Industrial Democracy

Download or read book Employment Management Employee Representation and Industrial Democracy written by William M. Leiserson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Employment Management, Employee Representation and Industrial Democracy: Address Delivered Before the National Association of Employment Managers, Cleveland, May 23, 1919 Works committees not substitute for unions. - Please note the insistence that the essential purpose of any attempt to organize the working force - namely, the improvement of relations between employer and employee - Will be defeated if works committees or representation plans are to be used as a substitute for organized labor or as a means of destroying it. This is the point I Wish to emphasize, in conclusion, also. And you will note in all the intelli gently prepared employee-representation plans a clause to the effect that these plans shall not abridge or conflict with the right of employee to belong to labor unions. The labor organizations that make collective agreements With employers covering wages, hours, and discipline are here to stay. It is their practices that gave rise to shop committees and they will grow in power and prestige with the extension of the committee and employee representation plans. 'there can not be complete industrial democracy until bargaining power is equalized between the managementthat owns a thousand jobs and the man who wants to hold one of these. To bargain on equal terms the thousand men must act as one in dealing with the management. And there can be no such unity until the employees are organized independently of the employer. Book Job design and industrial democracy

Download or read book Job design and industrial democracy written by Joep F. Bolweg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The organization of work is under critique in many industrialized countries. Bureaucracy, specialization, repetitive technology, and hierarchical control structures are criticized by politicians, trade unionists, and social scientists. They argue for improved quality of work, for work democratization, and for the humanization of work. This book evaluates Norwegian field ex periments in the area of job redesign which started already in 1964. Norway has therefore a lead in experience compared to most other countries, particu to the United States, where debates and subsequent experiments re larly volving around the quality of working life and the democratization of work started only in the early seventies. The Norwegian social scientists who left their academic bastions and started action research drew heavily upon the 'open socio-technical system' thinking as developed by the Tavistock Insti tute of Human Relations in London. This descriptive evaluation study ana lyzes the job redesign experiments from an industrial democracy perspective and places the experiments in their national political and labor relations contexts. Special emphasis is given to the actual and potential role trade unions can play in shopfloor job design projects. The industrial relations of the United States is generally used as reference point in this study. system The theory guiding the experiments regards work democratization through job redesign as a first step in a bottom-up process of organizational demo cratization.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Participation in Organizations

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Participation in Organizations written by Adrian Wilkinson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-02-18 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employee participation encompasses the range of mechanisms used to involve the workforce in decisions at all levels of the organization - whether direct or indirect - conducted with employees or through their representatives. In its various guises, the topic of employee participation has been a recurring theme in industrial relations and human resource management. One of the problems in trying to develop any analysis of participation is that there is potentially limited overlap between these different disciplinary traditions, and scholars from diverse traditions may know relatively little of the research that has been done elsewhere. Accordingly in this book, a number of the more significant disciplinary areas are analysed in greater depth in order to ensure that readers gain a better appreciation of what participation means from these quite different contextual perspectives. Not only is there a range of different traditions contributing to the research and literature on the subject, there is also an extremely diverse sets of practices that congregate under the banner of participation. The handbook discusses various arguments and schools of thought about employee participation, analyzes the range of forms that participation can take in practice, and examines the way in which it meets objectives that are set for it, either by employers, trade unions, individual workers, or, indeed, the state. In doing so, the Handbook brings together leading scholars from around the world who present and discuss fundamental theories and approaches to participation in organization as well as their connection to broader political forces. These selections address the changing contexts of employee participation, different cultural/ institutional models, old/'new' economy models, shifting social and political patterns, and the correspondence between industrial and political democracy and participation.

Book Developing Positive Employment Relations

Download or read book Developing Positive Employment Relations written by Stewart Johnstone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a critical assessment of the main conceptual debates concerning labour management partnership and cooperation at the workplace, this book evaluates the search for positive employment relations in five countries. The provision of collective employee representation, normally through trade unions, is central to most definitions of labour management partnership, and the aim is to develop collaborative relationships between unions, employers and employee representatives for the benefit all parties. While traditionally associated with employment relations in the coordinated market economies of the continental European nations, partnership approaches have attracted increasing attention in recent decades in the liberal market economies of the UK, Ireland, USA, Australia and New Zealand. Developing Positive Employment Relations assesses the conceptual debates, reviews the employment relations context in each of these countries, and provides workplace case studies of the dynamics of partnership at the enterprise level.
