This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embankment construction projects on very soft soil often give rise to serious problems. This volume on geotechnics and soft soil engineering therefore treats all phases of the design and construction process exhaustively, from the first investigation step to the monitoring of constructed work. The book presents the development concepts necessary fo

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground improvement is an established technique in foundation engineering. In recent decades, modern methods of ground improvement have utilised explosives, impact energy, thermal treatment of the soil, vacuum consolidation, vibratory compaction technologies, stabilization and solidification of soft soils, as well as combined systems of ingenious gr

Book Geotextile Reinforced Embankments on Soft Foundations

Download or read book Geotextile Reinforced Embankments on Soft Foundations written by Jack Fowler and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High strength geotextiles have allowed construction of embankments on soft soil foundations that will not support a man walking or support of conventional construction equipment. High strength geotextiles coupled with plastic strip drains have virtually eliminated the use of sand drains in the consolidation of soft clay deposits. This report describes a number of case histories of geotextile fabric-reinforced embankments constructed on very soft foundations in both Europe and the United States. The fabric-reinforcement philosophy for embankment design and construction developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers is presented in this report. Use of the design and construction techniques and methodology described in this report represent the latest state of the art for geotextile fabric-reinforced Embankment constructed on soft foundations. Keywords: Analysis; Dike; Earth; Embankment; Fabric; Foundation; Geotextiles; Reinforcement; Slopes.

Book Treatment of Problem Foundations for Highway Embankments

Download or read book Treatment of Problem Foundations for Highway Embankments written by Robert D. Holtz and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1989 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to geotechnical engineers, highway designers, construction engineers, planners, and others interested in constructing or widening highway embankments on problem foundations. Information is presented on site investigation and testing and on the various construction alternatives that are available when a highway must cross a problem foundation site. Construction over problem soil areas requires extensive site investigations and comparative design analyses to evaluate alternatives. This report of the Transportation Research Board updates and expands synthesis 29, which was published in 1973. It discusses the treatments and construction procedures that can be used to construct highway embankments over areas of soil that would otherwise not support such embankments. It describes site investigations, design analyses, and the kinds of treatments currently being used, including where they are applicable and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Book Embankments on Organic Soils

Download or read book Embankments on Organic Soils written by J. Hartlén and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-11-08 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more civil engineering constructions are being built on soft soils. As areas with better foundations are used up the necessity to be able to build structures on soft soils increases. The most troublesome of soft soils are organic soils due mainly to their high compressibility (much higher than in mineral soils), and also their very low shear strength. The large diversity of organic soils with respect to their origin as well as their properties make classification, testing, and engineering prediction of behaviour, very difficult. For this reason, engineers try, in general, to avoid constructing on deep layers of organic soils. If forced, by necessity, to do so, they manage with light structures e.g. embankments or low buildings. The authors of this book have been involved in a joint research project on the testing of embankments on organic soils. This was carried out in the North-Western part of Poland by the Swedish Geotechnical Institute and the Department of Geotechnics of Warsaw Agricultural University. The results of their research is presented in this new book and provides a valuable insight into this growing area in the field of engineering geology.
