Book The Death and Resurrection of Elvis Presley

Download or read book The Death and Resurrection of Elvis Presley written by Ted Harrison and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no other way to put it: Elvis is the King. Note the present tense: even though Elvis (supposedly) died nearly forty years ago, he has lived on in our hearts, as a sound, as an image, and as an especially vigorous personality. In fact, it’s safe to say no other celebrity has done so quite as well. The Death and Resurrection of Elvis Presley is the story of that afterlife, of Elvis after he left the building. Walking the eccentrically carpeted rooms of Graceland, bidding into stratospheric sums on his auctioned relics, and mingling among the some 200,000 impersonators of his likeness, Ted Harrison offers nothing less than the ultimate Elvis tribute. Harrison begins, of course, in pilgrimage: to Graceland. He shows how Elvis’s estate was pillaged nearly to ruin by his manager but was saved through the deft business acumen and financial vision of his divorced wife, one Priscilla Presley. If Graceland seems holy, that’s because it is: Harrison unveils in Elvis’s allure a deeply spiritual dimension, showing how Elvis fans, over the decades, have anointed their idol with Christ-like qualities. Through Elvis’s extravagance, Harrison raises fascinating links between money and faith, and through Elvis’s life, he shows how the King actually fulfilled a host of roles ranging from hero to martyr to saint. Underpinning the whole story is Elvis’s extraordinary charisma and—lest we forget—his astonishing musical genius. Fascinating, colorful, and deeply informative, this book is a must-have for any fan, anyone who was ever lucky enough to see Elvis alive or who hopes they might still be able to.

Book Elvis Has Left the Building

Download or read book Elvis Has Left the Building written by Dylan Jones and published by ABRAMS. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An interesting look at how 1977 marked the explosion of punk alongside this heartbreaking (though not altogether surprising) loss of a legend” (USA Today). In the late 1970s, punk music was setting out to destroy everything Elvis Presley had come to represent. But punk couldn’t destroy The King himself—he had already done that, succumbing to his excesses at Graceland on August 16, 1977. Ever since, Elvis has permeated the world in ways that are bizarre and inexplicable: a pop icon while alive, he has become almost a religious icon in death, a modern-day martyr crucified on the wheel of drugs, celebrity culture, junk food, and sex. In Elvis Has Left the Building, Dylan Jones takes us back to those heady days around the time of his death and the simultaneous rise of punk. Evoking the hysteria and devotion of The King’s numerous disciples and imitators, Jones offers a uniquely insightful commentary on Elvis’s life, times, and outrageous demise. Recounting how the artist single-handedly changed the course of popular music and culture, he also delves deep into the cult of The King and reveals what Elvis’s death meant—and still means to us today. “I’m not sure punk would have existed without [Elvis]. In fact I’m not sure a lot of things would have existed without him. Dylan Jones is the right man to ponder such questions.” —Bono “A gripping tale of impossible success and terrible waste and lost beauty that veers from Memphis to Las Vegas and all the way to the broken backstreets of London.” —Tony Parsons, author of The Hanging Club

Book Elvis Through My Eyes

Download or read book Elvis Through My Eyes written by Heart Lanier Shapre' and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sound on the Goose, I offer a work of fiction in which I seed to combine elements of humor and human drama into a re-telling on the experience of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn as they are caught up in and participate in decisive moments of American history. Crucial in this story is the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. My text follows Tom and Huck as they interact and participate in this monumental clash. I detail their adventurous spirits, show their dedication to one another, and describe their interactions with a diverse assortment of historical personages. I utilize visual and sensory images to portray the harshness and severity of battle. (Their doubt as to why they fight for a cause that neither men truly believes in.) I attempt to show the toll that this conflict takes on both of the main characters. The use of colloquial dialogue and descriptions of settings, inner thoughts and reflections augment the scope and tone of my work.

Which is why in 1977 Elvis faked his own death and endured massive facial reconstruction surgery, and disappeared from the limelight to live a normal life as the unassuming Aaron King. Unfortunately, leaving fame behind also meant leaving his fortune behind, too, and now Elvis finds himself broke and living in near poverty in a small apartment in Los Angeles. Luckily for him, it turns out he's a pretty good private investigator. Now in his seventies and contemplating a return to music (discreetly, of course), Elvis is hired to solve a baffling missing person case. A young starlet, at the beginning of a promising movie career, has seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth. As Elvis digs deeper, he finds himself surrounded by the seedier elements of Los Angeles, from nefarious Hollywood producers who prey upon the young, to twin brothers with a very dark secret. And as Elvis pieces the bizarre puzzle together, he slowly makes his singing comeback-and will be reunited on stage with someone even the King himself never dreamed possible.

Book Brandstorm Surviving and Thriving in the New Consumer Led Marketplace

This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Branding has become ubiquitous, with new brands becoming word-of-mouth successes literally overnight, and many welcome the easy familiarity they bring to daily life. But now brand proliferation is threatening not only to stifle true choice in the marketplace, but to render hard-won brand identities - some decades in the making - meaningless. With today's unprecedented access to thousands of brands a day, via Twitter, Facebook, and the rest, the balance of brand power is shifting irrevocably away from the businesses behind them. In Brandstorm, branding guru Liz Nickles argues that, as a result, the brand is no longer a value proposition in itself, and that marketers and brand managers must stop the dilution and focus on meaningful, market-specific reinvention for those brands that can stand the test of time. She offers the success secrets behind leading brands like Ralph Lauren, Justin Bieber, and Revlon, and how to channel them today.

Book Pieces of A Life

  • Author : Denny Dubs
  • Publisher : Page Publishing Inc

  • ISBN : 1662426607

Download or read book Pieces of A Life written by Denny Dubs and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-06-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pieces of a Life is a different kind of book in that it is not an autobiography in the strictest sense of the term. It does not move from the beginning (one’s birth or ancestry) to the end of life, but rather, it deals with people, stories, anecdotes, events, and thoughts I have had over the years that have largely centered around my interest in religion. The book is about my life, but there is nothing chronological about it; it is presented to you in pieces, a piece here and a piece there. Hopefully, you will find interest in these vignettes—some entertaining, some educational—and hopefully they might enlighten you to think more about your soul, salvation, and Father in heaven. If a story takes you there, perhaps others will follow. Unless you are born with great talent and ability, you, like me, will never do anything belonging to a great autobiography. Nevertheless, all our lives have worth, and there are things that others would find very interesting. God, our Father, has placed in each one of us matters that make us unique. This is my attempt to do just that, and I hope that it will encourage you to do your own such endeavor. Sometimes we have to share those things with other people. Perhaps, in doing so, we can change the world for the better.
