Book excerpt: Schöffer's Cantiones tell a fascinating story of South-North, Catholic-Protestant co-operation. The Cantiones quinque vocum selectissimæ (Strasbourg: Peter Schöffer the Younger, 1539) are a collection of 28 Latin five-voice motets by composers including Gombert, Willaert, and Jacquet of Mantua. This was Schöffer's first book of Latin motets as well as his last ever musical publication; he was granted an imperial privilege to print it by King Ferdinand I. The pieces had been sent to Schöffer by Hermann Matthias Werrecore, the choirmaster of the Duomo of Milan. However, this was at a time when no liturgical Latin choral singing took place in Strasbourg, following one of the harshest reformations - musically-speaking - across Europe. This book comprises a critical study of the anthology in terms of the circumstances of its assemblage and printing, its confessional significance, and the music itself. It considers the nature of the connection between Schöffer and Werrecore, and why a Protestant publisher based in Protestant Germany would try to sell Latin music that was endorsed by a Catholic monarch and emphatically had no chance of being performed in church in its place of publication. In addition, the monograph includes considerations of the motets themselves, brief biographical details of the composers - including the lesser-known ones (e.g. Ferrariensis, Sarton, Billon) - and a full list of all concordant sources. It will be of interest to performers and scholars alike, combining elements of historical research, musical criticism and - via the transcriptions hosted online - performance.

Book excerpt: Werner Packull delineates more clearly than any previous scholar the theological and spiritual differences between South German and Swiss Anabaptists. He examines thoroughly the dominant medieval mystical influence in the thought of Denck and Hut and the latter's immediate South German Anabaptist followers. Indeed, Packull decides that South German Anabaptism derives more from medieval mysticism than from the Reformation. Packull is convincing in his demonstration of this thesis because of his meticulous care in reading the primary sources and because he examines and refutes the arguments of those who would place the Protestant influence as the primary one. He carefully isolates and explains particular ideas of the medieval mystics and demonstrates their influence on Denck and Hut. Packull expands and elaborates the earlier suggestions of Kiwiet and Williams, both of whom postulated a discrete Anabaptism in South Germany as against that of Switzerland. He draws on the more recent and still unpublished work of Gottfried Seebass, especially on Seebass' selection of writings which he ascribes to Hut. Packull's second major thesis is that the earliest form of South German Anabaptism was transitional both sociologically and theologically. He demonstrates that there were indeed strains of Anabaptism which were not as clearly biblicist in emphasis as the one in Zurich. Packull's work makes the phenomenon of early Anabaptism more complex, less uniform, but hi252*.00storically more accurate, more in line with the realities of the religious ferment of the 1520s among German-speaking people.

In approaching this problem William Klassen decided that at no point in the history of the church was this question raised as urgently as in the sixteenth century. The recent discovery of a number of writings by Pilgram Marpeck, an outstanding leader among the Anabaptists of the sixteenth century, made him a logical point of departure for this study. Accordingly, the book begins with a brief description of Marpeck’s life and writings, then moves on to an analysis of the two central concepts in his theology––the covenant and the Christian community. For Marpeck, the covenant is determined by Christ, and not by the Old Testament, and so the interpreter must take very seriously the way in which Jesus Christ has illuminated all of scripture. In addition, the interpreter works within a community, a community of people who have covenanted with each other to follow Christ. The covenant is taken very seriously within the community, requiring a different approach to holy scripture from that adopted by the individualist. After his analysis of Marpeck’s theology, Klassen proceeds to examine the relationship of this sixteenth-century discussion to present hermeneutical debates. It is noted for example, that certain religious groups have had a great deal of difficulty coming to agreement on the relation of the old and the new covenants, and that in many seminaries today it is the major theological question. But the nature of the Christian community is also one which directly affects each congregation. Therefore the book addresses itself not only to the trained theologian, but to the congregation which seeks to take seriously its mandate to study the Bible.

Book excerpt: The edited volume aims to re-contextualize revolts in early modern Central and Southern Europe (Hungary, Croatia, Czech Lands, Austria, Germany, Italy) by adopting the interdisciplinary and comparative methods of social and cultural history. Instead of structural explanations like the model of state-building versus popular resistance, it wishes to put back the peasants themselves to the historical narratives of revolts. Peasants appear in the book as active agents fighting or bargaining for freedom, which was a practical issue for them. Nonetheless, the language of lord-peasant negotiation was that of religion, just as official punishments used Christian symbols. The approach of revolts as the events of collective violence also highlights the experiences and memories of participants. How did individuals and groups use remembering and forgetting as a means of forging an identity for themselves? Instead of the narratives of the powerful that became the normative stories of history, the perspective of the rebels uncovers the everyday faces of revolts more forcibly. Finally, contributors examine how later narrators used the rebels for their own purposes, in other words the subsequent representation of the revolts and their leaders in image, literature and historiography comes to the fore. The volume aims to overcome disciplinary boundaries by bringing together historians and scholars of related disciplines including the history of literature, the visual arts and anthropology. The central contention of the volume - the cultural imprint of peasant revolts - is fully addressed, thereby filling a conspicuous gap in the currently available literature.
