Book Electrification Phenomena in Rocks

Download or read book Electrification Phenomena in Rocks written by E. I. Parkhomenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many areas of geophysics, geology, geochemistry, and mining, there is considerable interest in laboratory data on the physical properties of various types of rocks. Until recently, how ever, only the mechanical properties of rocks had been studied in detail. The last few years have seen a relatively large amount of study of the electrical properties of rock samples and a need to organize the results of these studies has arisen. In"Electrical Properties of Rocks,"* E. 1. Parkhomenko reviewed and cataloged studies of electrical resistivity and the dielectric constant in rocks. In the present work she covers other electrical phenomena which are observed to occur in rocks and minerals and reviews the re sults of her own researches, as well as that of others, previously published. Theoretical and experimental data on the piezoelectric prop erties of minerals and rocks obtained since 1953 by E. 1. Parkho menko and myself as the result of laboratory investigations on quartz-bearing rocks (granite, gneiss, quartz veins, etc. ) comprise the bulk of the monograph (Chapters1-4). Itwas not previously con sidered that a polycrystalline mass such as a rock could exhibit piezoelectric properties - it was supposed characteristic only of single crystals.

Book excerpt: Electrical Spectroscopy of Earth Materials provides detailed coverage of theoretical and experimental methods of electrical spectroscopy of Earth materials, based on first-hand research and extensive data. The book includes actual data sets and specific explanations for the methods used in obtaining and analyzing the data, including graphical displays of results. It describes the electrical properties of various soil samples and offers both theory and techniques for researchers to apply to their own research. Including examination of the practical aspects of electrical spectroscopy measurements and extensive computer-readable data, Electrical Spectroscopy of Earth Materials is a unique resource for geophysicists to save both time and effort in understanding and analyzing Earth materials and soil properties. Includes coverage of spectroscopic methods, including details of the measurement process and lab setup Provides information about the data processing program for calculating all electrical parameters Presents computer-readable data for all samples from a wide variety of electrical conditions, including high-loss and low-loss soils Features case studies and complete data sets for soil electrical property measurements

Book Reservoir Rock Diagnostics for Water or Hydrocarbon Exploration

Download or read book Reservoir Rock Diagnostics for Water or Hydrocarbon Exploration written by Jerzy Sobotka and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a study that establishes a set of diagnostic parameters for characterizing the behavior of a geological medium stimulated by external fields and their interactions as a physical basis for developing new methods in exploration geophysics. It describes in detail the investigation methods and instruments (including laboratory, field and borehole devices), and discusses experimental, field and modeling investigations of the interaction of mechanic/electromagnetic fields in reservoir rocks. Lastly, the book also evaluates and the proposed methodology and demonstrates its effectiveness using case studies in which certain geophysical diagnostic/exploration problems have been solved.

Download or read book Modern Methods of Geochemical Analysis written by Richard Wainerdi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founders of geology at the beginning of the last century were suspicious oflaboratories. Hutton's well-known dictum illustrates the point: "There are also superficial reasoning men . . . they judge of the great oper ations of the mineral kingdom from having kindled a fire, and looked into the bottom of a little crucible. " The idea was not unreasonable; the earth is so large and its changes are so slow and so complicated that labo ratory tests and experiments were of little help. The earth had to be studied in its own terms and geology grew up as a separate science and not as a branch of physics or chemistry. Its practitioners were, for the most part, experts in structure, stratigraphy, or paleontology, not in silicate chemistry or mechanics. The chemists broke into this closed circle before the physicists did. The problems of the classification of rocks, particularly igneous rocks, and of the nature and genesis of ores are obviously chemical and, by the mid- 19th century, chemistry was in a state where rocks could be effectively analyzed, and a classification built up depending partly on chemistry and partly on the optical study of thin specimens. Gradually the chemical study of rocks became one of the central themes of earth science.

Book Geology Geodynamics and Atmospheric Electricity

Download or read book Geology Geodynamics and Atmospheric Electricity written by Vladimir Shuleikin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bubbles of hydrogen and methane carry soil radon, the main ionizer of surface air, into the surface atmosphere. As a consequence of ionization, light ion pairs are formed that determine the polar conductivity of the surface air; light ions’ aggregation with neutral condensation nuclei gives heavy ions, primarily responsible for the atmospheric electric field. As such, the density of hydrogen and methane subvertical flows will determine local electrical characteristics of the surface atmospheric air. Geological heterogeneities, deformations, and seismic and hydrogeological activity can change the density of hydrogen and methane flows. This book brings together extensive material from field observations to illustrate the possible use of atmospheric-electrical monitoring to solve problems of applied geophysics.
