Book Wave Scattering by Small Bodies of Arbitrary Shapes

Download or read book Wave Scattering by Small Bodies of Arbitrary Shapes written by Alexander G. Ramm and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents analytical formulas which allow one to calculate the S-matrix for the acoustic and electromagnetic wave scattering by small bodies or arbitrary shapes with arbitrary accuracy. Equations for the self-consistent field in media consisting of many small bodies are derived. Applications of these results to ultrasound mammography and electrical engineering are considered. The above formulas are not available in the works of other authors. Their derivation is based on a mathematical theory for solving integral equations of electrostatics, magnetostatics, and other static fields. These equations are at a simple characteristic value. Convergent iterative processes are constructed for stable solution of these equations. The theory completes the classical work of Rayleigh on scattering by small bodies by providing analytical formulas for polarizability tensors for bodies of arbitrary shapes.

Book High Order Numerical Methods for Problems in Wave Scattering

Download or read book High Order Numerical Methods for Problems in Wave Scattering written by Dane Scott Grundvig and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arbitrary high order numerical methods for time-harmonic acoustic scattering problems originally defined on unbounded domains are constructed. This is done by coupling recently developed high order local absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs) with finite difference methods for the Helmholtz equation. These ABCs are based on exact representations of the outgoing waves by means of farfield expansions. The finite difference methods, which are constructed from a deferred-correction (DC) technique, approximate the Helmholtz equation and the ABCs to any desired order. As a result, high order numerical methods with an overall order of convergence equal to the order of the DC schemes are obtained. A detailed construction of these DC finite difference schemes is presented. Details and results from an extension to heterogeneous media are also included. Additionally, a rigorous proof of the consistency of the DC schemes with the Helmholtz equation and the ABCs in polar coordinates is also given. The results of several numerical experiments corroborate the high order convergence of the proposed method. A novel local high order ABC for elastic waves based on farfield expansions is constructed and preliminary results applying it to elastic scattering problems are presented.

Book Inhomogeneous Waves In Solids And Fluids

Download or read book Inhomogeneous Waves In Solids And Fluids written by Giacomo Caviglia and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-10-09 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book may be viewed as an introduction to time-harmonic waves in dissipative bodies, notably viscoelastic solids and fluids. The inhomogeneity of the waves, which is due to the fact that planes of constant phase are not parallel to planes of constant amplitude, is shown to be strictly related to the dissipativity of the medium. A preliminary analysis is performed on the propagation of inhomogeneous waves in unbounded media and of reflection and refraction at plane interfaces. Then emphasis is given to those features that are of significance for applications. In essence, they regard surface waves, scattering by (curved) obstacles, wave propagation in layered heterogeneous media, and ray methods. The pertinent mathematical techniques are discussed so as to make the book reasonably self-contained.

Download or read book Mathematical Geophysics written by N.J. Vlaar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this book follow a topical trend. In several geophysical fields evidence is accumulating concerning the deviation of the earth's structure from radial symmetry. Seismology provides the most adequate resolution for revealing the earth's lateral inhomogeneity on a global to local scale. Lateral structure in the density distribution is also manifest in the earth's gravity field and in the geoid. Asphericity in physical parameters, generally supposed only to vary with the vertical coordinate, has a profound influence on geodynamics. The effects of these deviations from spherical symmetry concern in particular convection theory, post-glacial rebound and the dynamics of the lithosphere and upper mantle in general. At the 16th International Conference on Mathematical Geophysics which was held in Oosterbeek, the Netherlands, in 1986, the need was felt to present the state of the art. Several prospective authors were found interested to contribute to the present book. This Oosterbeek conference was one in a long series of topical conferences starting with the Upper Mantle Project Symposia on Geophysical Theory and Computers in the 1960s, and thence their successors, the conferences on Mathematical Geophysics, until the present.

Book Wave Scattering By Small Bodies Creating Materials With A Desired Refraction Coefficient And Other Applications

Download or read book Wave Scattering By Small Bodies Creating Materials With A Desired Refraction Coefficient And Other Applications written by Alexander G Ramm and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a research monograph. An asymptotically exact solution of the many-body scattering problem is given under the assumption a ≪ d ≪ λ, where a is the characteristic size of a small particle, d is the smallest distance between particles and λ is the wavelength in the medium in which the particles are embedded. Scattering of scalar and electromagnetic waves is considered. Heat transfer theory in the medium in which many small bodies are embedded is developed. Quantum-mechanical theory of scattering by many potentials with small support is constructed. On the basis of these theoretical results, important applications are presented. First, a method for creating materials with a desired refraction coefficient is given. Secondly, a method for creating wave-focusing materials is developed. Technological problems to be solved for practical usage of these applied results are discussed. This book contains the contents of the author's earlier monograph, published in 2013. New appendices, based on the author's review papers published after 2013, are added.
