Download or read book The Picshuas of H G Wells written by Gene K. Rinkel and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. G. Wells (1866_1946) was a literary lion throughout his career, publishing more than one hundred books, including classics such as War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, and The Time Machine. Though best remembered for his science fiction, Wells was also a prolific sketcher who frequently enlivened his correspondence and marginalia with cartoons. Those drawings made for his companion Amy Catherine Robbins, which he called "picshuas," allowed him a vehicle for his nuanced self-expression and satire. Gene K. Rinkel and Margaret E. Rinkel's The Picshuas of H. G. Wells interprets these highly original cartoons through an analysis of their peculiar content and style based on Wells's life and writings. The picshuas are perhaps the best demonstration of Wells's piquant sense of humor. They provide intriguing snapshots of Wells's robust private life and convey his opinions about other writers and public figures as well as himself, whose rotund cartoon figure he sometimes lampooned as "the Great Author." Using a narrative style of creative nonfiction, The Picshuas of H. G. Wells weaves facts from Wells's life with incidents reflected in the cartoons, episodes drawn from his novels, and scenes from other writings to provide glimpses into his moments of his personal and professional conflict and triumph. There emerges a fascinating and funny portrait of a complex literary personality and his complicated relationship with a devoted collaborator, his wife. Some forty picshuas were published in Wells's Experiment in Autobiography, but the wide range of the pichsuas throughout his correspondence and private papers has never been surveyed and published until now. As an ensemble, they provide close look at the Great Author in his most joyous and uninhibited moments, laughing at himself and the world.
Download or read book McCord Family written by Pamela Miller and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1993-12-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1921 David Ross McCord (1844-1930) founded the McCord Museum of Canadian History, which first opened in the Jessie Joseph House of McGill University. McCord's ancestors had come from Ireland to settle in Canada after the Seven Years War. Although they were initially merchants, by the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the McCords derived most of their wealth from the management of seigneurial land and from the subdivision of Temple Grove, their mountain estate which covered the area now bounded by Côte des Neiges Road and Cedar Avenue. This record of the McCords and their interest in religion, education and science reflect the intellectual trends of the era. David Ross McCord sought to collect in the broadest and most objective manner, and his pursuit of his dream to create a national museum of Canadian history provides valuable insight into the evolution of Montreal.
Download or read book Dibs en busca del s mismo written by Virginia M. Axline and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Autumn written by Philippe Delerm and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1999-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [This book is written in French.] Philippe Delerm draws us into the insane world of the pre-raphaelite painters. A spellbinding adventure in which characters tear each other apart. A destiny in chiaroscuro. It makes us wonder whether splendor is the height of misery, and whether the resort to artificial Edens is simply a mask for other troubles.

Download or read book The Poster written by Ruth E. Iskin and published by Dartmouth College Press. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poster: Art, Advertising, Design, and Collecting, 1860sÐ1900s is a cultural history that situates the poster at the crossroads of art, design, advertising, and collecting. Though international in scope, the book focuses especially on France and England. Ruth E. Iskin argues that the avant-garde poster and the original art print played an important role in the development of a modernist language of art in the 1890s, as well as in the adaptation of art to an era of mass media. She moreover contends that this new form of visual communication fundamentally redefined relations between word and image: poster designers embedded words within the graphic, rather than using images to illustrate a text. Posters had to function as effective advertising in the hectic environment of the urban street. Even though initially commissioned as advertisements, they were soon coveted by collectors. Iskin introduces readers to the late nineteenth-century ÒiconophileÓÑa new type of collector/curator/archivist who discovered in poster collecting an ephemeral archaeology of modernity. Bridging the separation between the fields of art, design, advertising, and collecting, IskinÕs insightful study proposes that the poster played a constitutive role in the modern culture of spectacle. This stunningly illustrated book will appeal to art historians and students of visual culture, as well as social and cultural history, media, design, and advertising.

Book excerpt: "This volume examines the multiple narrative perspectives Donoso presents and traces a transformation in Donoso's works from complex stage performance to political forum. Studying fiction as grotesque, mannered theater or as a transparent screen through which social and political concerns are scrutinized, Gonzalez Mandri illuminates another constant in Donoso's work: a weaving of feminine and masculine aspects of artistic voice as they incorporate the idioms of drama, radio, film, and television."--BOOK JACKET.

It compares these screen visions with what was happening on the ground at the time in both countries. From revolution through to the present global crisis, the films are left to speak for themselves, but their stories are measured alongside the author's experience following decades of research, writing, and activism along the line. Taken together, this book outlines a unique Border Film genre just now entering its Golden Age. This book also comes with a message to both nations that they should learn more from borderlanders about how to conduct cross-border lives"--
