Book excerpt: This is the third of a three-volume set on medieval scholarship that presents original biographical essays on scholars whose work has shaped medieval studies for the past four hundred years. A companion to Volume 1: History and Volume 2: Literature and Philology, Volume 3: Philosophy and the Arts covers the lives of twenty eminent individuals-from Victor Cousin (1792-1867) to Georges Chehata Anawati (1905-1994) in Philosophy; from H.J.W. Tillyard (1881-1968) to Gustave Reese (1899-1977) in Music; and from Alois Riegl (1858-1905) to Louis Grodecki (1910-1982) in Art History-whose subjects were the art, music, and philosophical thought of Europe between 500-1500. The scholars of medieval philosophy strove to identify the nexus of philosophical truth, whether they were engaged in the clash of the Christian church and secular republicanism as reflected in the tension between theology and philosophy, in addressing the conflicting perceptions of Muslim identity, or in defining Jewish philosophical theology in non-Jewish culture. Medieval musicologists, who are included as the subjects of the essays, pioneered or recontextualized traditional views on the definition of music as subject matter, on the relationship between music and philosophical concepts, on interpretative distinctions between secular and sacred music, monophony and polyphony, and concepts of form and compositional style. The art historians treated in this volume not only overturn the view of medieval art as an aesthetic decline from classical art, but they demonstrate the continual development of form and style inclusive of minor and major arts, in textiles, architecture and architectural sculpture, manuscripts, ivory carvings, and stained glass. The philosophers, musicologists, and art historians who appear in Volume 3 worked in three newly-emerging disciplines largely of nineteenth-century origin. In their distinguished and extraordinary output of energy in scholarly and academic arenas, they contributed significantly to the emergence and formation of medieval studies as the prime discipline of historical inquiry into and hence the key to understanding of the human experience.

Book excerpt: The reality of suffering in today's world, in our personal lives, is for many especially Western Christians an obstacle for entering into a relationship of faith with the One who bears the name "Almighty". Touched by this crisis the author inquires whether the theology of Thomas Aquinas (1224/5 - 1274) can help us find a way out. In this book some distance is taken from the crisis itself, in order to take a closer look at our faith regarding Christ's sufferings and how God almighty is related to these nexus mysteriorum. For what is more obvious for a Christian thinking about suffering and God's relation to it, to start with the consideration of the sufferings of Christ and how God is related to them? Questions like "Did and/or does God suffer too?", "How are we to understand 'God is love' (1 Jn 4,8, 16) in view of this?" and "What do Christians actually mean by the word 'almighty'?" are dealt with. Thomas' questions and associations may often not be ours. And yet it turns out that his approach opens up new, or rather (almost) forgotten and therefore to us surprising, and hopeful perspectives. Mark-Robin Hoogland C.P. (1969) is a Passionist priest. At the time of preparation for this dissertation he lived and worked in the Passionist Inner City Mission at East End London (U.K.) and he was active in youth work there and in The Hague (the Netherlands). While he was a resaerch-fellow at the Catholic Theological University (KTU) at Utrecht, he also worked for three years at Mesos Medical Centre at Utrecht as a hospital chaplain and after that in several parishes where for a shorter or longer time no priest was available. At present he is preparing a study on Thomas Aquinas regarding God and human suffering, in the context of Stauros International, a Passionist Institute.

Khrushchev made his now famous speech on the crimes of the Stalin era. That speech marked a break with the past and it marked the end of what J.M. Bochenski dubbed the "dead period" of Soviet philosophy. Soviet philosophy changed abruptly after 1956, especially in the area of dialectical materialism. Yet most philosophers in the West neither noticed nor cared. For them, the resurrection of Soviet philosophy, even if believable, was of little interest. The reasons for the lack of belief and interest were multiple. Soviet philosophy had been dull for so long that subtle differences made little difference. The Cold War was in a frigid period and reinforced the attitude of avoiding anything Soviet. Phenomenology and exis tentialism were booming in Europe and analytic philosophy was king on the Anglo-American philosophical scene. Moreover, not many philosophers in the West knew or could read Russian or were motivated to learn it to be able to read Soviet philosophical works. The launching of Sputnik awakened the West from its self complacent slumbers. Academic interest in the Soviet Union grew.

Aquinas holds that all the virtues are bestowed on humans by God along with the gift of sanctifying grace. Since he also holds, with Aristotle, that we can create virtuous dispositions in ourselves through our own repeated good acts, a question arises: How are we to understand the relationship between the virtues God infuses at the moment of grace and virtues that are gradually acquired over time? In this important book, Angela McKay Knobel provides a detailed examination of Aquinas’s theory of infused moral virtue, with special attention to the question of how the infused and acquired moral virtues are related. Part 1 examines Aquinas’s own explicit remarks about the infused and acquired virtues and considers whether and to what extent a coherent “theory” of the relationship between the infused and acquired virtues can be found in Aquinas. Knobel argues that while Aquinas says almost nothing about how the infused and acquired virtues are related, he clearly does believe that the “structure” of the infused virtues mirrors that of the acquired in important ways. Part 2 uses that structure to evaluate existing interpretations of Aquinas and argues that no existing account adequately captures Aquinas’s most fundamental commitments. Knobel ultimately argues that the correct account lies somewhere between the two most commonly advocated theories. Written primarily for students and scholars of moral philosophy and theology, the book will also appeal to readers interested in understanding Aquinas’s theory of virtue.

Those which have appeared in earlier translation, are here presented in versions based on significant new textual and historical scholarship which makes them significant improvements on the earlier versions. All the translations are accompanied by introductions, notes, and suggestions for further reading in order to help guide the reader. The first selections date to the fourth century, when the ideals of Christian sanctity were evolving to meet the demands of a world in which Christianity was an accepted religion and when the public veneration of relics was growing greatly in scope.
